Prosopagnosia
« on: 01 October, 2015, 09:18:42 pm »
The inability to recognize the faces of familiar people, typically as a result of damage to the brain.

It's gotta name!

There's a test here http://www.faceblind.org/facetests/ff/ff_intro.php

My Results

Quote
Out of 30 faces, you correctly identified 6.
You were familiar with 27 of the people in this test.

If we exclude the ones you were unfamiliar with, you got 22% correct.

On our previous version of this test, the average person with normal face recognition was able to recognize about 85% of the faces they were familiar with. If you missed more than half of the faces you were familiar with, this may indicate face recognition difficulties.

I confess I was rather pleased to get 6;  I suspect I'm not alone.

Ah, the Wowbagger test  ;D

I can't remember what I scored, but I'm unsurprisingly crap at recognising grainy cropped images of famous people.

I'm lazy and mostly recognise people by their hair, mannerisms, bike lights[1], etc.  It's why I find films about Men In Suits hard to follow.

There were very few women's faces in the test.

Do you recognise women's faces more than men's?

I think I do, but mostly because they have more distinctive hair.

The ratio was 7 women, to 23 men, so you would seem to have a point. Clearly designed by a bloke.

Although, to be fair - it's a genderless test; the gender of the picture is immaterial.

Familiar with all 30 people but could only recognise 20 of them (67%), so below average but probably not problematically so. Having said that, I have found myself on occasion talking with someone thinking they were someone entirely different, which was embarrassing to say the least. I do find that increasingly I seem to be surrounded by people who I think I probably know, but have no idea from where, so have to bluff much of the time. This probably comes across as rude, even though unintentional.

As I've become older and wiser (and more of my social circle have acquired autism spectrum diagnoses), I've got a lot more relaxed about just getting it over with and asking people who they are.  It's still rude, of course, but it's much less confusing.

The social model would place responsibility on people for being insufficiently distinctive...   :)

That's normal for me.  Everyone seems to know who I am before I even start.  Has been since school (where I started off at a disadvantage due to crap hearing and rapidly progressed to being memorably weird).

Tellingly, I can't actually remember how I did on the remainder of the test ............

12 out of 30 is actually better than I expected. TBI effects mean I often wouldn't recognise family if they were out of the time/place I expected to see them.
46% so still failed.

I managed to confuse a certain ex US President with the Funkadelic front man. I don't think it was their faces that confused me.

I did fail to identify the ex Sedgefield MP, which I count as a blessing.
