As long as you don't get the ruined-for-TV version...

Melon-farmers!

(I know that was Repo Man but are we talking about the same kind of bowdlerisation?)

300, which was a lot better than I expected, and certainly an improvement on Kingdom of Heaven.  The Persians were a bit orc-like athough Xerxes was a big jessie.

I watched it again last night. I saw it the first time on a plane, and made Mrs MV endure it last night. Funny what tricks altitude, wine and memory can play.  It was awful, trite, tedious shite.

Mr Nobody. A mess. A big sprawling, badly edited, didactic, Jonze/ Kaufamnn-influenced mess with some rather beautiful bits in it, but still, a mess.

The North Face.  A German movie about early attempts to scale the north face of the Eiger.  It was excellent - the climbing scenes were superb, there was a beautiful, coy romance between the two main characters, and it dealt well with the audience's knowledge of where else German pride and nationalism led the world and its young men, apart from to scale mountains (though the fat, rich Jew was perhaps a tad overdone).  One of the best films I've seen in a while, and quite a tonic when compared to...

Trans-Siberian, a tedious, grey movie where none of the characters were believable, least of all the female lead - supposed to be a religious do-gooder with A Past, but she was too anodyne to be plausible as either.  To be fair to the actress, the script didn't help, as we had to believe that she was a former wild child, but still naive enough to wander off with the Italian ne'er-do-well.  It was just a rather dull movie, except for a horrible, gratuitous torture scene (from which the party involved made a full, if not miraculous, recovery).  I don't know why I persisted with it.  Well, I do - I was hoping that the female characters might get their kit off, but this being Siberia, there was little enough of that either.

I saw 10 minutes of it stopped watching; I thought it was rather odd. High contrast sepia stuff with low budget acting and scene-setting.

I'm glad I only saw the last 10 mins.
It is simpler than it looks.

We watched the original 'Wall Street' last night, it was really good. I reckon it must have looked pretty amazing when it first came out.

We liked it. Thriller. Future dystopia. Fantastically atmospheric presentation.

Avatar. A good effort though somewhat predictable/formulaic/stereotypical plotlines and characters. Maybe I'm getting old.

And Greybeard by Brian Aldiss, which P.D.James stole the idea from (but of course here is Not SF, oh no) is even better (and much weirder).

Correct. And she's rather good. The bored village girls are also quite entertaining. I enjoyed it, & Mrs B loved it. She's got rather keen on British films.

She appears in a lot less than hotpants. A bit of make-up & tousled hair, in one scene.

I started a thread on this after seeing it the other week:

Tamara Drewe

It's only my opinion but Tamsin Grieg delivered the best performance in it by far.
