Still working through the more obscure war films.  Last might's was "Twelve O'Clock High" about the first US bomber groups in England.  Basic moral: through harsh management you can make people deliver whatever you want, but in the end it will catch up with you.

The USP of this film is that (probably for cost reasons) all the combat footage is genuine.  It works better than it should although you're left with the uncomfortable feeling, as another Focke-Wulf 190 explodes, that this is a snuff movie.
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

Last night I watched The boy in the Striped pyjamas which my daughter got me for Christmas, as she'd read the book some time ago.

Sadly, I could see which way the film was going to end, but it was an extremely powerful film and very well made.

Last night was RED, two nights ago, Knight and Day.

Both great, mindless fun :)

The boat that rocked. Not a bad film if a little long and overplayed in places.

Cracking sound track however.

Just tried to watch Spielberg's War of the Worlds. Since I slated it when I saw it at the cinema, I thought I'd give it a second chance.

It's still rubbish.

I'm waiting for someone to make a film that bears any resemblance to the book.

Apart from the Spielberg film, there were two other WOTW films released in 2005 - the one produced by Pendragon Pictures was actually set in Victorian England rather than present-day America. It spent some time in development hell before going straight to DVD release, garnering somewhat negative reviews.

Watched Casablanca yesterday. Not the first time I'd seen it, nor will it be the last, it is such a great film. Ingrid Bergman is so feminine in it, if she looked at you and smiled, it would make even the Pope go weak at the knees.
One of my top films ever. Miles ahead of any modern crap.

Kick Ass. Much fun.

We watched it (finally) last night. Great fun! Quite a lot of dodgy motivation issues for certain characters that stopped it being a classic, but it really was very good entertainment. And young Chloe stole it. [why on earth was there any fuss about allegedly sexy costumes?!?]

It's amazing that after game-changing films like this (and the Matrix), Hollywood still churns out formulaic stereotypical po-faced turgid action/martial arts movies, and people still pay to see them.

The Enemy Below.  Should have stuck with the original ending where the Americans and Germans all end up in the sea together, brawling.

"Das Boot" explains the destroyer/U-boat tradeoff better:

- the U-boat can hide, but can't move fast underwater
- the destroyer can use ASDIC to find the U-boat but not while directly overhead or when depth charges are exploding, which gives the U-boat a small opportunity to change course
- the destroyer, for obvious reasons, can only depth-charge when steaming fast
- depth charges have to get very close to a U-boat to sink it, and the deeper uit goes the closer they have to be.
- the destroyer can ram the U-boat but not vice-versa.

Generally the destroyer has the upper hand as long as it doesn't lose the U-boat.

Iron Man, just now.  Completely preposterous, but great fun, apart from a slightly crap denouement.

Just completed a one day marathon of all three Lord of the Rings films (extended editions of course).

It really does take all day, about 13 hours all told, with a bit of faffing time included. I enjoyed it but am not in a hurry to repeat it.

Massive deprogramming to follow.

Great way to spend a lazy day. I find it is helped by a good single malt and plenty of 'picking' food on hand.
