The Damned United (again).  I think Timothy Spall was miscast (Peter Taylor was actually quite sinister in demeanour, and rather taller) but Colm Meaney absolutely nails Don Revie.

The best bits are when Clough is in the Leeds boardroom being unbelievably obnoxious and arrogant.  They deserve it, though.

SWMBO got it for Christmas. We watched it the other evening. I thought it was a great film. Brought back some fond memories of watching footy on the black and white tele and, after a halfs play in a wet winter, not being able to tell the home side form the away side cos the mud had turned both kits the same shade of monochrome ;D

There were some frightening reminders of the 'robust' tackles that were allowed in the good old days though.

Another  for The Kkkkkkkings Speech

There seems to be a theme developing that Timothy Spall is miscast quite a lot....

Tonight I will be watching all three hours of Stephen Poliakoff's Shooting The Past. A brilliant drama made in the late 90s with Timothy Spall and Lindsay Duncan.
We still have that on VHS.
A great story, superbly done, excellent music and, oh my, Lindsay Duncan.  :-*  :)
It's a bit weird, but actually quite wonderful.

I too wondered about the fine detail (though didn't let it spoil my enjoyment ;) )

My contribution to the pot of possible scenarios were that they were all tentacledressers or telephone sanitisation engineers.

Either way, it's a corker of a film, which someone from this forum had a hand in. Jakob?

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Definitely the weakest of the first three movies (I haven't seen the fourth one), partly cos he's saddled with a cheesy child sidekick and an incredibly shrill love interest, but mainly owing to the careless use of Indian and Chinese stereotypes.  They seemed much more comfortable with the French and German stereotypes in the other two movies.

It's still a great romp, with some marvellous set-pieces, especially the high-kicking Chinese nightclub opening, the chase through the mine on fragile carts, and the rope bridge finale.  More recent Hollywood action movies don't match this standard, sadly.

"Electric Dreams", a 1984 period piece.  Lenny van Dohlen (also the Nazi cop in "the Red Dwarf episode "Back to Reality") can't act.  Virginia Madsen is hawt.  The computer gets the best lines.  "Don't pick up on the first ring."

Knowing on DVD last night.

Typical Nicholas Cage fare. Quite good for the first 2/3's- 3/4's wit a bit of tension being built up by the discoveries of what the code meant and the attentions of "The Whispering Men" but a standard schmaltzy Hollywood feel good about the chidlers ending.

Casino Royale, third viewing, so a number of plot holes visible.

Still winced at the chair bit though.

Wall-E was a brilliant film for so many reasons, here are a few:

1) I *do* like a bit of robots-who-aren't-evil sci-fi and Disney/Pixar design robots almost exactly how my imagination does.

It reminded me a lot of the Robot in "A Grand Day Out" in its character.

ditto.

Thought the queen mum (as we now know her) was played rather too sympathetically and a little more modern than would have been the case but as an insight into what it must be like to have to live in that environment and have to overcome one's personal demons for 'the good of the country' it was brilliant. Irrespective of your views on the monarchy, you have to feel some sympathy for the man.

I loved Edward Norton in "Fight Club" and elsewhere but here...I get the idea that he's smirking behind his moustache because he knows no-one will be convinced by the preposterous plot. Gorgeous cast and costumes though.

But isn't it wonderfully preposterous? I really enjoyed The Illusionist, although I thought Norton was the weakest in terms of facial hair. I am definitely going to go for that Rufus Sewell combo at some point.

OK - I confess! It was really good. In the end.

Now for Inception.

...which somehow reminds me:  Synechdoche New York is on TV (FilmFour) just now.

Is this the one where, pre-embarkation, they all line up and sing* on the dock by the sub, in the dark and rain? I find that scene incredibly moving (assuming it's the right sub film!)

It's the right film Mattc and yes I think its the right scene. Plus when they are in the sub, and after Sean Connery's speech they all start singing off-cuff and then disappear off the American's radar's, but just before they go the radar chap swears that he heard singing.. :)

Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll

Judged on its technical merits, it's totally brilliant. And Andy Serkis is superb. As is Bill Milner. But it's not an awful lot of fun.

I think that film is Crimson Tide, where the Captain is Gene Hackman and the boat is the USS Alabama.

Intense indeed - we went on Sunday. I may be a total wimp, but it's the first film I've seen where I've had to watch the floor and judge when to risk a quick glance at the screen from the reactions of the audience (shrieks / groans / gasps). Mrs JStone was less squeamish - but then she used to be a nurse and is hardened to blood & gore.

... and he wasn't wearing a h*lm*t during the ride-in  ;)
