Does 8 speed chain work on 5/6/7 speed sprockets?
« on: 23 April, 2023, 05:38:10 pm »
I'm after a longer wearing chain, I'm looking at the KMC X8-93, which is 8 speed.

I've never used more than 7, is it going to work on 5/6/7 speed sprockets?

I'm only concerned about the width of the chain.

They don't seem to make just 7 speed e-bike chains so I've used an 8 speed KMC e8 EPT e-bike chain on a 7 speed e-bike and not had any issues.

So if you're just after a longer wearing chain, as some Shimano & Sunrace chains are specifically marked as 6, 7 & 8 speed compatible, you should be fine.

Short answer : Yes.

Slightly longer answer: Shimano (for example) flog their HG 40 chain as a 6,7,8 speed chain.
