The Olympic opening ceremony
« on: 24 July, 2012, 09:09:16 am »
Along with thirty or forty thousand others, I watched a rehearsal for the London 2012 opening ceremony last night. Danny Boyle himself asked the audience to refrain from tweeting too many details - #save the surprise.

IMHO, it was sensational and will blow the minds of the billion or so who'll watch it on Friday night. It is clever, cool, funny, moving and completely British. The old woman beside me kept shouting and pointing to make sure I was seeing everything.

I know that some of you are friends of individuals in the cast of thousands who perform - let them know that it was stunning.

After the handover section in the last closing ceremony (remember the double decker with Beckham, Jimmy Page and Leona Lewis? ) I didn't hold out much hope for our opening ceremony. However, when the job was given to Danny Boyle I was much more confident that it would be cool and at the very least not cringeworthy. I'm now quite looking forward to it.

I'm watching it tomorrow night, as Miss Emily is a performer.

I advise the use of a large rubber band or maybe a pyjama cord as the only way of stopping your jaw hitting the floor.

This kind of thing doesn’t normally interest me (I hate musicals, for example; all that dancing around and singing does nothing for me) but given it’s Danny Boyle I’m reckoning on it being worth watching…

Stupid question, and I can Google, but what is the starting time for the ceremony?

Did the stage stay up ok?

I do hope that lesley Garrett will be singing again - that was such a highlight of Sunday's celebrations in Paris.

I won't be watching it, not that it makes any difference to anyone else.

Danny Boyle has lost all credibility for working for this corporate wankfest disguised as an orgy of mindless jingoistic flag waving.

Checks location.

Yes, I was right, this is The Pub and not POBI.  ::-)
It is simpler than it looks.

Transfer of £10 billion+ of public money going into the hands of corporate chums, for 2 weeks of a few people jumping around and throwing things around. And it's not POBI?

Nope, this is definitely The Pub.

It is ... completely British.
I'm expecting cups of tea, tutting, queuing, stoicism in the face of adversity, complaining about the weather, and chips.

Sorry, no chips - Macdonalds won't allow them.

I'm gonna limp to the pub and drink 'til the rest of me is as numb as my arse.

I'm off to see it tomorrow too. I take it there won't be objections to me taking my DSLR + telephoto? It comes in at under the 30cm limit.

Depends on which camera manufacturers (if any) are sponsoring the Games.  :demon: ;)

Let us know how you get on. I'm under 30cm too, but wonder how religiously it will be implemented.

My better half will also be going to tomorrows rehearsal - and my youngest cousin (I think) is singing. Something todo with being one of a group of 120 walking down a hill with a tree on top..

Anyhow, looking forward to Friday if I can get near a decent telly..

No problem. There were many people around me with serious cameras.

What about taking a personal supply of London Tap WaterTM into the grounds?

I can imagine that it will be banned in a 'no! It could be a bomb. Put it in this bin next to me with all the other potential bombs.' kind of thing.
