Post your gold post boxes
« on: 06 August, 2012, 10:09:12 am »
OK - I'll start.

We've got two!  ;D Apparently the Royal Mail view these two as the same in their database so they both get painted. Still, Pete Reed does have two gold medals, so it isn't entirely wrong.

There are about 6 coats of gold paint to go on, it is so thin. Photo when it is done...

It is simpler than it looks.

As an aside, Royal Mail are not actually allowed to paint post boxes any colour other than the standard red and black livery, with the exception of green and black livery for some the very early post boxes and Air Force blue for surviving George VI airmail boxes.

Gold is only allowed to be applied to the Crown and Royal cypher.  The use of gold paint elsewhere is not permitted.

Quarter of a mile in my case. Ours isn't up there on the map yet. Paint still wet.

Swindon is probably the furthest from a gold postbox that it's possible to be, if you discount the lightly populated areas where there be dragons etc.  On the other hand, we have produced at least one half decent darts player.

We also have a Peter Reed one here in Chiswick (as that is where he lives now):

Right! What's next?

Ooooh. That sounds like a daft idea.  I am in!

The nearest to York seems to be Huddersfield, which isn't near at all. However there look to be a few in and around Manchester...

Where, incidentally, we saw an airmail blue one on Saturday, something I didn't know existed. Luckily, an info board nearby explained it.

Huddersfield's a lot closer to York than Colne is to Whitehaven though.

Nice to see the two closest ones to me are cycling medallists

Our nearest is either Sherbourne or London. Think I'd better get some gold wool and knit a post box cosy for our local box.

It seems the horsy-prancy types have just won a team Gold, so there'll be one in Ampney St. Peter which is not so terribly far (geographically) from Swindon.  I wonder whether or not Deustche Post will tart up a postbox in Mainz? After all it's not just the cycling that can poach "German" talent. :)

ETA.  Not sure if Ampney St. Peter is big enough to have a postbox.

Here are our two main ones.

Pete Reed actually has 4 post boxes: two as shown here, one outside his mum's and one in Chiswick.

Yet for paralympic gold winners they won't be doing individual stamps, but "group stamps" ecause of "logistics" :(

http://www.paralympics.org.uk/gb/news/royal-mail-stamp-collection

I call bullshit and direct discrimination to the "excuse" as I reckon if Olympic team GB got 42 medals they wouldn't suddenly stop doing individual stamps for those athletes.

Why couldn't they have done some kind of grouping for all of them by sport or something to keep the numbers "manageable".

Oh well, at least they didn't make the paralympian stamps Actually 2nd Class Stamps!
