You live and learn.

Were it not for the north American accents I would be open the the suggestion that the programme was filmed in the Humber Road area of our fair town.

I would have said Tiptree....

Yesterday evening was pleasant and unpleasant in equal measure.  The weather was cold and windy although mercifully there was no rain or ice.  As you'd expect it was dark and we found the obligatory flood, this time along Bumfords Lane.  That particular section has been flooded since December as myself and Tomsk rode through it on our way back from the Christmas Do.

By the time we got to Chelmsford, after two and a half hours and 30 miles, my hands were very cold so I suggested we dive into The Woolpack - Oaky didn't put up much of a fight.  The pub was very good.  bobb was right, it's a street corner boozer but they have obviously got the formula bang on as it was busy, mainly with blokes enjoying the simple pleasure of a top notch pint.  I'd go back as they had some interesting looking pickled eggs

We had a couple, plus some crisps and nuts, and decided to take the direct route home up Springfield and Boreham Roads.  Extra layers saw me warm and toasty on the return journey.

Thanks for the company Oaky  :-*

Aye - a good evening, although the wind was a bit brutal/chilling in places.

Aside from the flooded section, there were also some horrific sections of potholed, crap-covered lanes.  You had the choice of riding on a car tyre width of tarmac+potholes, or, if you strayed off that, on a thick mixture of mud and flints.  ("Didn't that used to be a road?")

The pub was nice enough though, and I'm certainly going to return to try the Scotch Bonnet Chilli Picked Eggs.  I sampled two ales:  Vale "Red Kite" and a Dominion "Amber porter" - both very drinkable.
You are in a maze of twisty flat droves, all alike.

This Thursday is Folk Night at the 'White Hart' Margaretting Tye, [being the 2nd Thurs of the month]. Anyone up for this? Makes a change from being Morris Dancing Groupies. Might even get to use the Marathon Winters.

I need help! I'm having a bit of route apathy and in need of inspiration. I want a couple of new 60km and 100km routes from Witham and environs but I always end up going along the same old routes. Please give me some alternatives!

You could always get a little rail-assistance. There are some excellent rides to be had starting in Stowmarket.

Feel free to have a rummage round in my .gpx collection. Many of the below begin in Marks Tey.

Maybe nothing particularly ground breaking but.....
110km DIY by GPS route
79km circumnavigation of Chelmsford
200km DIY by GPS reverse Windmill 200k with Witham start/finish
67km Abberton Reservoir Loop
Never knowingly underfed on an Audax

A few suggestions from me:

100k loop east of Witham

Regional Route 50

My classic north and south of the A12 route

Moletrap Loop with lunch at The Moletrap

Colchester, Wivenhoe and ferry across to Mersea

Happy riding

If you've got nothing better to do with 65p buy the Braintree and Witham Times today.  Turn to page 39 where you'll find some chump who's full of his own self importance extolling the virtues of cycling around Witham.  Such are the dangers of a free press  ;D

I had a qucik flick through last week's quality edition expecting to see you but to no avail. The prospect of seeing you in print will motivate a trip to Morrisons in the next couple of days.

What's the drill for this week? Are you planning on going folky tomorrow? Mrs C. is sue to go tap dancing but has not been motivated to go for the last couple of weeks so might be free. Probably meet you there if I do get out as working late.

I'm not out this week or next week - real life is getting in the way.  I might be out week commencing 25th but will definitely be awheel on Sunday 3rd March for the forward planning triumph that is the proposed ride to Monk Street

Do you have the route for Monk St? Might try and stretch a 200 out of it.

Up a bit early this morning? Wet the bed?

Had a qucik squizz at Monk St this morning. According to Garmin Basecamp it's 201km. Been mucking around with Google Maps to try and get controls but it's too squiggly to get satisfactory distance for validation purposes. Would have to add on 20km to get to official validation distance. Might put in a 100km brevet for the first half to at least get a point for fixed wheel challenge. Or cycle to Maldon and back at the end.....

Also need to know about tiffin. Breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea?

Real life will shortly be releasing me so I can get back on me bike.  The earliest opportunity for a spin next week is Thursday evening.  Huggy and I have discussed a spin around a couple of Maldon pubs (Royal Oak on Fambridge Road and the Queen Vic on Spital Road).

Anyone fancy it?

I have a suspicion that Vaughan Williams named a hymn tune after Monk Street.
