PBP After Effects
« on: 07 September, 2023, 10:28:31 am »
Now that contact points are healed, I'm finding that I am flying on my regular cycle routes - which I am putting down to 750 miles of base training in 3 days.  I remember a fellow rider (not of this parish) saying that they often did their best 25-mile TT times a week after a 600.  Wondering how others are fairing.

Less well than you! I did a DIY 200 last Sunday and felt pretty empty on the return leg, the last 50km was purgatory.

Yes, also feeling very fit (apart from the pins and needles!). Hoping to milk it as long as possible into the autumn...

For me the main after effect is difficulty in concentrating on my job, I continuously think about various options for the next big adventure, next spring/summer...  :P

Every good long ride I've done has made riding from home extremely boring.  "Hello, bit of roadside gravel. I see you haven't moved since the last five times I was past here. Hello, crack!  Hello pothole! Long time no see..."
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

I'll let you all know after Saturday's Morris Major with ECE.
In 2019 I did an open 10 on the A3 on 7th Sept having done 1829 miles through August inc PBP. I did 20'40'' which was 30s down on my PB (same course). Perhaps a 25 would have been a better option.

agree that the legs are feeling good, have got a few PR's on strava on my commutes this week!

my main after effect however is wanting to eat everything constantly.
it's getting hard to switch my brain off from thinking a huge bowl of pasta with side of rice with is a normal snack.

I can relate to that. My best speedskating season (as a 10k specialist) was the one after PBP 2003. I managed to clock 16.07 (WR was around 13 minutes back then) giving me a spot in the top 50 on the national ranking. Never got that far in any other year.

That must have been very fast.
What on earth am I doing here on this beautiful day?! This is the only life I've got!!

Took in Streatley Hill on the commute home today on an almost identical ride to one on August 10.  Was 8% quicker despite no extra perceived efflort

Good lord!

Sunday will be my first (slightly) arduous ride (away day with the club round Isle-of-Wight). Until now I've taken it easy, feeling very fatigued straight after PBP (as usual!)

MUCH less aches-and-pains after the ride this time - a combo of better pacing, possibly lowest gearing yet, and an unwillingness to ride hard during the heat? On easy rides my legs have felt exactly as a month ago.

Anyway: I think I don't notice these massive fitness boosts as the event just wears my whole system down a lot - reduced sleep being the main culprit. If you're nodding off at your desk on Friday morning, it's optimistic to expect to go well on Saturday's ride!

Dunno if it implies anything, but a few months after both PBP 2007 and 2015 I found myself on an operating table getting stents put into my coronary arteries.

didn't do it this time but

2007 - got a knee thing i think from a cramped seat on the bus.  Couldn't ride for a month but felt good.  A bit fruastrating
2011 - slight anchilies tendon.  Felt great but had to back off doing much for a few weeks
2019 - had been developing a cold throughout the entire event.  It got worse (and i realised it wasn't hayfever) on the ferry back.  Felt like shit
