I watched this godwit for about 50 minutes. It didn't move from its rock as the tide came in, even when the waves were breaking over its feet. Then it stayed there as the waters receded again. It was still there when I left. Called Cnut (by me at least, if not by the wider avian community).

Oystercatcher a bit before sunset.

That's a lovely picture, J.  Oddly, I've never seen an oystercatcher at the coast but there are loads of them in the Dales!  Oddlier, the one in your picture seems to have ruffles round its ankles.  Could it be stuff caught in rings?  I know they do get ringed.

Well, I can't see if there are rings, but these shown the legs a bit better.

Those ankles are very puzzling.  I wonder if it's detritus from nesting?  The lichen-covered granite is very evocative of schoolboy climbing forays at Sennen Cove and Bosigran.  It's very unforgiving, a sort of natural emery paper!

A neighbour says it could be sheep wool. (so nesting detritus a possibility)

Lovely!  It's amazing isn't it?  We live on a very busy road junction in Greater Manchester and yet we had a GSW the other day after a (to us) gap of a few years.  We also have a pair of bullfinches coming every day.  It's getting like a parrot house!

(Oh - and House Sparrows are far from humble - but I know what you mean, I think!)

Some bird pics from my hols at the seaside.

A dunlin, I think

And here's a video of the same subjects, and some slow-motion wagtails and wheatears. And coastal oystercatchers.

Here's a wagtail catching a fly. Very slowly.

Thanks.

There were quite a few others I didn't edit - notably some nice ones of a sizeable flock of dunlin looking either dark or light depending which side of the birds was turned to wards you. It's amazing how they co-ordinate their flight.

I missed a trick actually. I think there was a great white egret which we spotted whilst walking back to the cars - it's about a mile in each direction to the bird hide. But my camera with its zoom lens was tucked up in its bag. My pal swore she could see black on its wings and wondered if it could be a white stork (most unlikely in Essex, and I think they will still be in Africa anyway), but I think my money is on a great white egret, without being 100% sure. By that time I was looking forward to my cup of tea and bacon butty.

We have seen storks here already this year, if that helps.
