Title: The company on DIYs and perms thread
Post by: Weirdy Biker on 09 July, 2009, 07:21:01 pm
Suggestion for admin - could be we have a sub-board for DIY/perms that riders would like some company on?

Suggestion is that the topic headings in that board would be "DATE - START LOCATION - DISTANCE - Brief description".  For example "8/8/09 - Redhill, Surrey - 400km - DIY to Wiltshire"

I'd personally find this facility very helpful.

Some other users of the audax board have already indicated in the topic that they think this would be a useful facility.

Rather than a sub-board (which is beyond my powers) we'll try a sticky topic.  If it takes off then maybe we can ask the forum admins for a new board, but no promises. So, if you'd like company on a DIY or perm, post here.

You're too late for the Humfire (http://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=19205.msg344282#msg344282).

Indeed.

One option might be to use this thread as an index to more developed threads about rides, eg

Middle-aged, well preserved and well upholstered male cyclist seeks like-minded company on leisurely weekend tour of southern England's tea rooms, convenience stores, A road service stations and bus shelters.

Likes; riding through rainy nights along romantic unlit winding pot-holed country lanes, gut wrenching ascents, white knuckle descents, narrowly avoiding lumps of aggregate and agriculture along the way.

GSOH, NS, financially solvent, has own hair and own teeth (mostly).

Will consider groups.

RSVP

Picture preferrable.

H

N.B. There are no calendar 600s this weekend but there is The Bournemouth Square 200 (a fine ride in its second year) and, I believe, at least one ride in Wales.

details here:

I sort of started a niche version of this with my 600 series thread, which died when I stopped riding a DIY 600 every month.

Anyway, there's still time to enter the 600km DIY from Bletchley with me and Rich Forrest on September 26th.
Just get your entry form to your DIY organiser even if you haven't got acard, you can use one of mine.

Also, anyone up for a winter 600, let me know. There's always a chance that I will ride a 600.

As a user of the board, I'd prefer a sticky index with no discussion or a sub-board to a sticky organisational topic where people make arrangements. The reason being that threads rapidly diverge, and digging through pages of discussion doesn't help in finding out where people are riding and when.

The problem with an index is that it will be more effort to maintain and enforce for Mal.
I'm not sure if there would be enough rides organised to justify a sub-board - I guess there are typically a dozen or so a year?

shouldn't be a problem for Mal - see Mal's example Hellfire post, where he LINKS to t'other thread. You could do that with your own thread. An informative post here would act as a 'calendar entry' for group perms. New riders may then stumble upon it serendipitously :)

(See also TG's post, where he fails to do this - he understands gear ratios but not embedding URLs !)

There may just be a dozen now, but the market could increase if we set this sort of thing up.

21st November I'm planning to take my bucket & spade (and cake, obv) to the seaside at Sheringham.

Early start at Brandon- Diss- Sheringham- Swaffham- Brandon, 200k

Rain wont stop play but nasty winds and ice might.

Anyone fancy sharing cake, fish & chips? (Not necessarily in that order)

Fidgetbuzz may well be interested; as he's back in Blighty by then, and needing DIYs to maintain his RRTY. I might be interested - depending on how distracting Real Lifetm is at the time.

Either way - if you particularly want to see Swaffham, that's fine - but if you'd prefer a quieter route from Sheringham, via Necton Co-op (for stamping duties) you are welcome to stop here for refreshments and a rest (and possibly to thaw out).

Sounds like a nice ride but autoroute comes out at 190km and sends you through the centre of Norwich,is there a control missing?

Précis...

It's a Mesh: Brandon, Diss, Wymondham, Aylsham, Sheringham, North Elmham, Swaffham, Brandon.
It'll be something a bit like this (http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?id=25746) on the ground.
Pretty much pancake-flat, so speedy- an early start will get me home in plenty of time for my date dinner.

Not actually a DIY but as good as:-

I've entered a Dinner Dart to York on the Friday (27th Nov) from Delph - Askern - Barton-on-Humber - Howden - York.  MSeries is meeting me at Askern.  If anyone fancies joining us I estimate we'll be leaving Lakeside Cafe, Askern at about 12:00 and Christine's Diner Howden at about 16:30 (those timings are approximate and subject to MSeries' approval!  I suppose the weather and accessibility of the Humber Bridge might have a say on the day).

Riding into York during the evening rush hour sounds better with a big bunch especially if someone up front knows where we are going - so not me!

NB Christine's Diner might have a different name, but it's at the A614/B1228 junction

The Lakeside cafe is on Spa Pool Road in Askern, near A19/Station Road traffic lights

See you there

Approved ! Christines= Redbeck Cafe=Hopkinsons Fair Deals. I know York well enough to be able to find the racecourse, but I may have to detour to a friends house to pick up my bag drop bag.

I'm looking at a ride from the Ox-Did-Reading area on sat 2nd Jan (or possiblity of Sun 3rd). Very weather dependent.

Current plan is The MC200 on the Saturday, probably heading for Hungerford first for 10-ish. If I get any responses I'll start a thread (or add to the MC200 perm topic. or something). Best to PM me to get my attention, as it's short notice.  [or txt if you have it!]

Edit: Well, we're on (me+DrBru). A-roading to Hungerford, hope the Cotswolds don't ice up when it gets dark ...

Great Eastern Perm (1000km)

1-4 June 2010.  Start Red Lodge (Mildenhall, Kennet Station is nearest) lunchtime Tues 1/6
Rough schedule:

Day 1 to South Mimms Services and back  to Red Lodge (226km), sleep stop
Day 2 Red Lodge to Knaresborough (nr Harrogate) (318km), sleep stop
Day 3 Kn to Scotch corner then back to Lincoln or further South (288+km), sleep stop
Day 4 back to Red Lodge
It needs to be done in 75 hours.
My preferred method is to plod along rather slower and stop less often ...

Any suggestions for places to sleep stop welcome.

A rather late start to 2010 for me. I'll be bimbling round routes easily accessible from West London.

10April - a 120km round the Thames Valley starting Chiswick or Datchet depending on how I feel - done with Swiss Hat & Friend
17April - Dave Hudsons Pulborough Connection 200km perm (with brevet) starting from Guildford - Aborted - 'Borked Back'
24April - The Faccombe Willy, a 200km DIY awaiting permification starting from Chalfont St Peter.  It's like the Willy Wamer only a bit harder more scenic. (I'll be helping Chris Beynon man the 7Across Arrivee after). Done with Mattc an Scotlington.

08May - Taste of the Test (Well, its a Calendar but I'll be there).

Also on the agenda (date tbc):

The much acclaimed 'Chicken Run', a London-Brighton-London 200km DIY also awaiting permification, with a lunch control at the Old Post Office in Wiston. This starts in Chiswick for some curious reason.

The sadly de-listed 'Muswells Hills' as a DIY 200km from Finsbury, North London.

I'm planning to do the fabulous Port Navigation 200 on Sunday 2 May with a start in Ballachulish aiming for the 9.50 ferry from Oban, an unhurried ride round Mull for a later ferry at Fishnish and amble back to Ballachulish. Goodness me. I never thought I'd hear myself say this... but that's way too much flat for my liking. Ohh... my arse...  :(

One has to get out of the saddle once in a while - to air one's views...

Isn't that (essentially) the section of LEL that everyone cannot wait to be past northbound, and dreads again southbound?

Good Luck!

You forget, Chris, I like flatness.  Unlike hills I seem to be able to keep up - hill climbing skills are lacking on my part.  Not that it'll make much difference as it doesn't look like anyone else wants to do a perm 1000 that's too long/flat/short.

I think you may mean Bernie's Long Flat one though (but I'd imagine there's a certain similarity to it).

I'm coming to the conclusion that my show off cloth badge (the 1000 km one) looks too much like it says 100km for ayone to be excited appalled by it.

Sun 23rd May; El Supremo's Pulborough - Reading 200 in the company of Team Rocket aka Manotea and self; Pulborough or Guildford start

Martin and I bimbled round today, the hottest day of the year so far, both of us working our way back to fitness. Blue skies are great but I felt the heat in the afternoon. Still, I perked up once the day cooled. I rode down to Guildford so a 250km day for me on my 71" Summer gear. Excellent!

w/e of 19 June.  Brevet Cymru 400 perm anyone?

I bailed at 350km in the calendar event, citing sense of humour failure and general wishywashyness in the face of torrential rain.  This is my chance to redeem myself on a straightforward 400k.

Severn View services start.  Probably around 7am.  Leisurely pace.

I'm going to be doing a 600km midweek ride starting Wed 1st Sept in Carlisle
Route roughly is
Carlisle - Scotch corner - York - Howden - Beverley - Sleaford - Spalding - Kings Lynn - Downham Mkt - Biggleswade - Bletchley

I've booked train tickets and family rooms at Carlisle and Sleaford (360km) Travelodges.
Bletchley and Carlisle are both on the Westcoast mainline if anyone wants to join me.

Paul - that route goes within a mile or two of my front door. Depending on dates, I'd be well up for joining you. Currently I have only Sat 10th or Sun 11th July free though before MC1000...  :( Does that suit?

Don't fancy combining it with something like the Faccombe Willy and making it into a 600 with a kip stop at mine do you?  ;)

Right, bright and early start for a 200k leaving from Halfway in Sheffield and going through Nottingham, Market Harborough, St. Neots and ending in Cambridge on July 24th.

Any company appreciated.

After a short journey to Bishops Stortford, I'm driving a van into London to the start of the Dunwich Dynamo so you'd be welcome to a lift if you're doing that. I can't offer a ride from Dunwich back to London but can offer to get you from London back to Bishops Stortford after that.

Obviously dependant on being allowed and you not wanting to traverse Scotland but potter northwards instead.

I'm thinking of another attempt at the under appreciated monument which is the Denmead 600 Perm (http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/445493), probably on the August BH weekend though dates are flexible.

The traditional route is a 400+200 off Alresford. I'd look to start at Reading (2nd half day2) routing down to Alresford and round to Bradford under Avon, Cirencester and Lambourn/Membury for a sleep break at 400km, then down to Alresford and back to Reading to finish. Sounds easy but a ~40hr ride for me.

And a Taste of The Test on Sat 14th Aug as a warmupTo be rescheduled due to 'domestics'.

I'm at somewhat of a loose end on BH weekend, but probably not up for a 600. Still trying to shake of this pesky achilles problem I picked up on MC1K. I may be up for riding part of your 600 with you, say 200k or 300k making it a DIY for me and a bit of company for you. Alternatively, if you give up on the 600 idea, could be tempted by the Chicken Willy again - very nice ride that!

Scottlington, have you considered a slow pootle round SimonP's Hauxton 200 instead? I have it on good authority that the route is not hilly and I certainly plan to take my time thanks to knee and late season ennui. That and riding the Tints on Saturday.
Edit: Chris types faster than me.

Thanks Chap(ette)s,

Believe me, I have looked at Simon's event and seriously considered entering. However, and this is the Chiken Willy's big win, I can start from home, have a slow pootle and still be back at a resonable hour whereas Simon's event is 2 hours away by car. Slow pootle + 2 out there and 2 hours back = a long day....Blame Manotea - he's been turning me on to DIYs over the past few months!  ;D

Seriously though, I would much rather ride a calendar event - if only for the assurance of friendly faces - but am trying to reign in my habit of driving long distances to events.

Well, at the risk of developing route boredom, I am riding this again tomorrow.

I had not originally planned to ride at all this weekend (otherwise I would have done the Wyle & Ebble Valley 200 Calendar) but have changed my mind at the last minute which means this will be rolled out again. I have been playing around with a derivitive of this route which avoids going into London but haven't finished so Chicken Willy it is again!

Starting Bookham at 06.30, getting to Chiswick for 08.00 and pushing on to Brighton from there. Company welcome. Will be reasonably sedate - last run out on this route was 11hrs 25 mins for the 213k distance.

Scottlington is off 'down under' the evening of the 4th Dec so to keep his RRTY alive he thought he'd get up before dawn for a 200km, as you do.

By way of a change the plan is to ride Greenbank's London Brighton route which loops through Putney - Tunbridge Wells - Lindfield - Brighton - Horsham - Putney (though we'll probably RV at Chiswick rather than Putney, tbd). Scottlington will leave Bookham circa 5am and we'll RV at Putney/Chiswick circa 6:30. Company welcome

South East riders.

I am going to be testing my Redhill Beach Trip route sheet (runs 12 Feb, PBP qualifier) later this month (weather dependant).  Most likely date is this Saturday (20 Nov).  Anyone interested?

Route is a peach (goes from Redhill down to Seaford promenade and Beachy Head, via Wisborough Green and Ditchling, back via Uckfield.  Avoids hills where possible, so <2000m of climb in 208km).

PM me if it tickles your fancy.

Is anyone planning a DIY from the east side of Sheffield?

Otherwise I'm off for Gainsborough, Louth, Horncastle, Market Rasen and home. Main roads and dull but will get the job done in winter with minimal ice related falling off.

Dunno yet. Probably Norfolk/Lincolnshire bound to pick up Marcus.
Perhaps test out MattC's 600 from Goring to Lincolnshire and back?
We'll tailor the route as much as we can to make it easier for people to ride.

that would be very kind. We now have a draft routesheet! Available to anyone willing to test-ride (some of) it.

No info controls, so fully DIY-compatible (not sure how 24h _all_ the controls are, should be ATMs at minimum )

Obviously I've been doing this all wrong.

Fat middle aged man, smoking alcoholic, seeks nubile 22 year old (blonde, brunnette, redhead, I'm not that fussy) to ride unfeasably hilly 200k route in the depths of winter. Kiss of life may be required at 158k.

PS the real reason for this post - TG, I've done some stupid things in my life but your January 600 is attracting me more than a Ferrero Rocher. How many have you got interested?

In Audax it's got to be distance dating, so 1200km is really needed; time to up grade the ride distance of this Jan DIY me thinks.

Am tall, of moderate width, with a rustic complexion, passable appearance and male. On the boab scale of companionship I rate myself as a 3.25.

My bits aren't that flatish but I haven't yet found myself in a Shakira quandry.

Mike K and Marcus so far. Mike K was thinking of doing an ECE with the Willy Warmer. It'd be a good way of breaking the ride down. Ride 100k to the start, ride the 200k event, then another 100k ish, then some sleep and finish the ride off on Sunday.

I'll be riding round the Chicken Willy (London to Brighton and Back) route on Saturday 19.2.1 as a 200km DIY perm with Scottlington and clubmates so if you feel like an early season trip to the seaside drop me a line for details. We'll be going through Richmond Park/Richmond Gate at 8am and heading down via Mitchem.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scottlington & I rode on Sunday 20th as it happens because the weather was a bit inclement on Saturday and would have made for a miserable day out. Sunday was just the right side of wet & cold. It felt like it might rain but didn't, which is just as well as I left my waterproofs at home, and only cold enough to be mildly bracing. As was I was slightly overdressed in Assos 851 jacket and Lusso longs and my base layers went in the saddle bag at the first opportunity, along with my long fingered gloves. After that I was fine and it was mitts all the way from there.

I'm going to be riding round again this Sunday coming (27.2) with Willesden Maestro's Ray Kelly and Liamfitz for some more easy early season miles and to get more feedback on the new route which is available as a paper perm from moi as The Ditchling Devil (http://www.aukweb.net/perms/detail/PST01/). Excellent.

Currently looking to ride a 200 this weekend, Saturday or Sunday. Not sure what to ride yet but thinking about either the Poor Student or Redhill Beach Trip perm - EDIT; don't think that's been permified yet.

However, could equally just bash out a London to Brighton DIY, Faccombe Willy DIY or use Manotea's new and excellent Dithcling Devil perm. I have options is what I am saying so looking for (slow) company.

Finished the main route in about 9 hours...wet start, but dried up by the time I got to Odiham.  Very windy for most of the ride with strong headwinds pretty much all the way to Romsey which knackered me!  All in all a nice route.

Hmm I'm tempted indeed ! TBH I just want to get some miles in. Both starts are within an hours drive from me so fit the bill. I'm not fussed about the route and love trips to the coast. This will be my first perm. I have warned you already that I'm slow. Moreover I will have ridden to Dover the previous day (train back) so my legs will be less than fresh - but that's the idea! So long as you don't feel obliged to stick with me if you are itching to go faster I'll send off for a Seaford - Yalding card.
Title: DIY LEL - Saturday 14 May
Post by: Somnolent on 11 May, 2011, 10:39:18 am
Ah the delights of family life...

Sat 14th May, I have to take my daughter to the wilds of Essex for the day - and not wanting to pay petrol for a double journey or sit and twiddle my thumbs for 11 hours, I have conceived a cunning plan....

DIY LEL   Southern legs..

Start Chignall (CM1 4TE)  at 9.30 am - down to Loughton, up through Gamlingay to St Ives, back down through Saffron Walden and Great Dunmow to Chignall ( I need to be back by 8.30 pm)

I've entered this with JH   http://www.aukweb.net/perms/detail/JHA09/ (http://www.aukweb.net/perms/detail/JHA09/) agreed GPS validation with him, and got the track all worked out to follow the proposed LEL route as far as possible.

I'd be happy if anyone wanted to join me for all or part ?

I'm looking to do El Supremo's Buckbarn-Sutton Scotney 200k permanent on Sat 9th July. I'll be riding down from Horsham, about 6 miles from the start at Buckbarn. The ride goes Buckbarn, Chichester, Winchester, Sutton Scotney, Liss, Buckbarn. I'm afraid El S hasn't offered to set up a personal tea and stollen station.

I ride SLOW (prob a little over 12 hours). If there are any like minded souls out there it would be good to have company (or just a wave from any faster rider speeding past).

A google search for Buckbarn will fail - it is near Copsale, on the crossroads of the A24 and A272, with a large drive through MacD's its only claim to fame as far as I can make out. (Happy to be put right if I've maligned the place).

Saturday 30 July (210km)
Dundee - Alyth - Pitlochry - Kinloch Rannoch - Aberfeldy - Bridge O' Balgie - Crainlarich (overnight stay at YH)

Sunday 31 July (130km - a Sunday pootle)
Crainlarich - Auchterarder - Newburgh - Dundee

The Saturday ride will see me leaving Dundee at 5am.  The Sunday will be more leisurely.

PM me if of interest (could meet up on route, for example).

22/9/11 - Crinan, - 400km - DIY to Edinburgh via Newtonmore and other places  :)

As I failed to do a calendar 400k event this year I've cobbled my first DIY GPS ride together to complete my SR. Hopefully I may come across a fellow Audaxer or two as I head south from Newtonmore. I am aiming at riding a steady 20k average speed.

I believe the upgrading to dual of part of the A9 at Dalnacardoch has had some effect for cyclists but I'm hoping that the works will be finished by the time I get there as it indicates on the Traffic Scotland website that it should be finished by the end of this week.

My route using a chunk of Graeme Wylie's Mull it Over

Post by: Revellinho on 08 October, 2011, 12:29:12 pm
In an effort to do an AAA event each month this winter, I have just posted an entry for Steve Snook's Deepdale and Fleet Moss 120 which I intend to ride on 5 Nov.  If anyone 'up north' fancies coming along, the plan is to set off by 10:00am from Settle and would expect the 120km to take about 6 hrs (if it is reasonable weather).

The weather forecast for tomorrow is good so I will be doing El S's Medway Meander, departing Edenbridge at around 7.30am. Anyone who wants to join me for all or part of the route is very welcome.

Saturday 10th December 2011 — 208 km from Cambridge

Starting at Cambridge at 07:00, controlling at Lavenham (Co-op), Manningtree (Riverside fish and chips), Finchingfield (café, or Fox Inn), and Royston (Tesco). Something like this (http://g.co/maps/a2vvf).

Let me know if you want to ride, or if you want to join us somewhere en route.

This Saturday I'm riding this route (http://g.co/maps/9mcn6), from Stamford Bridge to Bridlington, after a brief seaside stop I'll head down to the Humber Bridge and back to Stammy Bridge via Gunness and Boothferry bridges.  It's a DIY200, 220km on the road and Aidan OTP is joining in for a bit, probably from Sledmere to the Humber.  Does anybody else fancy a ride?

I've got to go over to Leeds and see SWMBO, and also tell her that I'll be out next Saturday for the impromptu seasonal get-together that appears to be taking shape elsewhere.

Invite her along. It will of course be very nice to see you, you miserable old git. ;)

I'm doing a 200k DIY route from home (Waddesdon) going west and north to take in Woodperry, Burford, Chipping Norton, Edgehill, Southam, Towcester and Aylesbury and finally home.

It's booked for Saturday December 10th, and I will probably start at around 7.00am.

Anyone want to join me for some or all of the ride? GPX track available, FOC.

I'll cycle over to the start and leave you somewhere after Towcester.

Edit; It's about 30km from mine to LM's. So if anyone wants to stay over on Friday night I have space.
210km to finish at mine also.

Wobbly - I have not done the route before, (and am now at work without the map), so Rich's reply above is probably correct. I made as straight a line as I could on the map using minor roads. Suggestions welcome if you have knowledge.

TG - you are welcome.

Rich - I have made up an AUK CONTROL sign whch will be on the garden fence at the front of our drive parking space. I'll leave my car on the main road, so there will be plenty of space to fettle. Come through the wrought iron gates at the side of the house to the back door. Lycra Lady and Lycra Girl will be asleep at that hour, so no loud giggling please.

Those who arrive in time will qualfy for toast and coffee. Address = 23 Frederick Street, Waddesdon HP18 0LU. Mobile = 0789 997 3810.

If I can get a pass for a morning ride, I'd love to join you for some of the southern section. I MIGHT pop over for breakfast (I'll claim expenses for recce-ing future control facilities ;) ).
Could I have the route so that I can intercept you somewhere before Burford? You may have my email address, if not, PM me.

Thanks,

I've sent out GPX tracks to Richard and Matt.

The weather forecast for Saturday morning is showing as between -3 and -1 at the start time of 7.00am.

That would make it too risky if it has been at all damp overnight, because like others, I really don't do ice.

I'll wait until the start time, for a final decision.

Rich - if it is too icy to ride, can I change my electronic Brevet to another day, or does it evaporate?

Wobbly - another time - hopefully.

I'm not riding tomorrow, because the forecast is for sub zero temperatures overnight, and it rained here today. The temperature will not rise above freezing until around 9.00 - it is said - so I don't want to risk a fall.

I'll try and re-schedule around December 28, 29 or 30th.

Downhil - route goes Waddesdon, past Brill, Horton cum Studley, Waterberry, Islip, Kidlington, Long Hsnborough, Witney, then through to Burford for coffee at the Coppet Kettle. I' out at present. When home, I can email gpx track and 'route instructions'.

Thanks to TG, mattc and downhill for your company. I got back home at 8.56, after a puncture in Aylesbury. I had thought that might have pushed me over the time limit, so I was quite grumpy for a while, until matt confirmed the limit was 13 hrs 59 mins, so I feel better now.

Clearly I need to work on my routing skills, as there was too much time spend on main roads.

My next ride is the Poor Student - see some of you then!!

Happy New Year,

I've got a pile of brevet cards to get through: Down to Downs and AAA Milne (hilly 100s) and Ditchling Devil and Boat Ride (200s starting from London). Saturday may be a bit easier for the 100s as trains to the start (and back) are more frequent.

I have the 17/18th penned in for a perm.  I'm about to sent Billy an entry for Down To Downs and AAA Milne - so would be up for doing one of them if that suited?  I'd be training down from London most probably.

I'm considering giving the Boat Ride a go next Sunday - if the snow/ice situation clears up.  Company welcome.

Probably around 7 to make the most of daylight. Where are you based? I am in Chiswick and would ride to Hayes to start.

I'm not an 8 hour whippet - generally get around a 200 in 11-12 hours. Average is the best description of my pace!

I'll obviously be keeping a close eye on the weather as well.

About 30k from Rotherhithe to the start. Depends on the number of traffic-lights along the Uxbridge Road whether it's quicker to catch a train from Paddington to Hayes (arr. 7:02). No help from the District Line that early.

As part of reconnoitring the Barnard Castle control for LEL in '13 I'm planning an Arrow style ride to the Skeeby Travelodge just south of Scotch Corner on 25 - 26 April.  Plan is to leave Basingstoke at 6pm on 25th with controls at Wallingford, Banbury, Market Harborough, Sleaford, Horncastle, Willerby (western side of Hull), Hornsea, Malton, and Skeeby - total 512km by Google Maps with aim of arriving Skeeby between 6pm and 7pm on 26th.

Hoping for a southerly wind and aiming to be pretty relentless as far as Horncastle and a bit more relaxed in Yorkshire.

Got this wrong - its the 18 - 19 April.

Polepole - did you have any thoughts about the 17/18th March?  I (will) have brevet cards for the Down To Downs and AAA Milne perms from Billy Weir if either of those appealed?

Looks like Fixillated and myself will be doing the Boat Ride 200 perm this Sunday - fingers crossed for no more snow/ice!  I've shaken off a cold and felt pretty good commuting around today.

Finally - if anyone is forward planning, I'm planning on doing the perm of The Poor Student 200 on Sunday 26th March (as I missed out on it this January) - it will be a slow run though, as the keen-eyed will notice this is the day after the Dean 300.  Company welcome, but I may be (even) less perky than usual!

Hi marcusjb. Martin M and I ( and I think a couple of others) will probably be doing his new perm -the Reliable 100k on the 18th March (early start planned as it's Mother's day but no time fixed yet). You are more than welcome to join us. I shall be plodding round at my usual sedate pace but others will be of a more compatible speed with you.

I've done both of Billy's perms and they are great rides. I've also got a card for each so will definitely do them both at some point during the year, but not sure when as yet. If you find yourself at a loose end and wanting some SLOW company on one of them do feel free to pm me. I'll join you if I'm free.

I may enjoy Easter more if I cheat and do some training before the arrow. Entry forms for the longer Men of Kent (one each for the 300 and 400) perms have been sent to the organiser.

I vaguely plan a very late on Friday start for the 300 and a civilised Saturday morning time for the 400, both from Tonbridge and the first, third and fifth weekend in March are still available. Target times (no lengthy stops planned) are 16 and 22 hours.

If they are Peak Audax perms at some point you will be controlling at  Dean Row, Poynton, Marple or Broken Cross or even Uppermill or Stalybridge. Tomorrow I'm riding JOGLE as a DIY.  Yes, I'm doing it all tomorrow.

...no, not that JOGLE.  This is Jorvik Otley Gargrave Leyburn Easingwold Eboracum: a paltry 206km.  I'll be leaving Parliament Street in York at 9am.  Yes I know it's short notice, but does anybody want to join in?

on Friday 20th subject to RL & a final decision sometime Thursday 19th.

Planning to do DIY perm Basingstoke - Witney - Wantage - Stone (Bucks) - Basingstoke on Sunday 29th starting 4am and finishing midday.   Will be getting the diesel engine warmed up for BCM and then a testing season so if anyone wants a high speed tow through Oxfordshire let me know.  Having a stressful week at work so unlikely to be taking prisoners.

Darn it, CET, I did not read this until today. Did you get wet? I spent most of the day building a store in my garden. If I'd known, I could have met you at or near Stone, which is about 10 miles from my place, and given you some company. (I assume it's the Stone just to the west of Aylesbury?)

Did it go OK?

It was very wet.  I'd planned to get some bad weather riding in (in case it cuts up rough on Mille Alba) but got more than I had bargained for.  The Newbury-Wantage road was completely blocked by a fallen tree and required some enterprising Cyclocross to get around and the descents into Wantage were hairy because of the gale-force crosswind.  I left at 2.20am to be back in time for lunch and was at Stone Co-op at about 8.30 where I picked up a sausage roll and a couple of Twix for the ride.  Returned via Christmas Common and Caversham to pick up my usual commute back from Reading, although remembered in time to avoid the ford north of Bramley which would have been impassable.  Emptied about a pint of water out of my new waterproof socks at the end.

It was a nice route, especially from Islip across Otmoor to Stone, and I'll have to do it again sometime when I don't have my eyes half-closed against the rain  ;D

I missed the Severn Across calendar event last weekend, so have decided to do a DIY Severn Across.

Starting from Waddesdon, then going via Thame, Woodstock, Tewkesbury, Symonds Yat to Chepstow. Then back via Malmesbury, Royal Wootton Basset, Membury, Streatley/Goring, Marlow, Princes Risborough, Chearsley and Waddesdon.

I plan to start at 6.00am, and my only previous 400k (the calendar event last year) took me 22 hours.

If you want to try and rendezvous, let me know.

I did try to come up with another 400k route, but didn't really come up with anything any better.
I still like the idea of this, but I'm doing a ride in Chipping Norton at 9am on Sunday, so some sleep inbetween would be nice, but mybe not essential.

I have been attempting to get hold of Rich Forrest via e-mail regarding DIYs but have had no response to several mails. It may be possible that the e-mail addresses are wrong. Does anyone have his e-mail or phone contact details as they are not listed in the AUK handbook or on the website?  If so, can you please PM  me with the details.

I'll go to the seaside instead and get some sleep on Saturday night so I can ride on Sunday too. I fancy using the 90" fixed and doing the same roads gets boring.

As long as you keep eating and drinking. Maybe have a midday snooze in the shade to make for a faster evening/night ride when it cools down.

Yes was due to moving and BT issues.
Spent 4hrs+ on emails today and about a 3rd of a way through them.

PM me if any issues, otherwise I'll reply as I work up the emails.

Sun 24th: Longest Sunday Cheddar Gorge 300

Starting Didcot, probably 0430 if I'm on my own, but am flexible. (Could meet at Lambourn/Marlborough. ) That gives me a fighting chance of a daylight finish.

As I'm now free on this weekend, I fancy a long ride to use the long days. I'm open to other local suggestions, might even ride 'just' a 200 if you twist my arm. Could also ride Saturday instead, if coerced. (May travel if sofa-space available!)

Sun 24th EDIT: OK, so I wimped out. The weather was pretty good today, but the forecast was soooo upanddown over the week that I lost all gumption  ::-) Still might ride when summer arrives, I have another local rider interested...

I haven't done any 200ks this month so need to do one wed or Thurs this week.

Any recommendations for one I can start within an hour of Ascot? Thinking about maybe South East Oxford 200k or I might pop down to New Forest for the excursion. There are a few with Thames in the title which might be good, I'd like a fairly easy one as I've had a few weeks out

Cambrian 4C towards the end of August - starting from Caersws Station at 14.37 on a Friday with controls at Llanidloes, Knighton, Brecon, Llanwrtyd Wells, Tregaron, Aberystwyth, Llanidloes, Bala, Llangollen, Llanfyllin and arriving back at Caersws for a sensible amount of drinking time before 18.37 back to Basingstoke via Birmingham New Street.  This is the over-distance vastly under-rated in AAA points Cambrian ride that I have been wanting to do for ages.  Need someone to pretend to ride with me so Mrs CET thinks that I won't be out all night on my own.

AFAIK this ride has only had two completions in its history and none since I took on the rides in 2007.

Date would be ok with me. I had thought of an early morning start on loop 2, 3 then 1 to minimise night riding (at least until final loop) rather than starting with a complete night from the off. Let's discuss, will pm you my tel No.

I feel...anointed.  It saved the best 'til last, when it bloody well HOONED it down, from Usk to Chepstow - we're talking surfable streams here ;D ;D ;D

Headwind. TL 90-degrees. Headwind. TL 90-degrees. Headwind ??? Repeat for 250Km. Weather - Just FRO and do one, 'kay.

Not content with an overdistance event, I decide to find an extra 20Km as well

Rum DoodleFfordd Pen Lllech was stupid  ;)  Managed about 15 metres at the bottom, before lifting the front (on a 20x28) despite honking at the time - whoops! Must take the Trice & super-granny someday, but I suspect I'll just spin the back out...

Other than that, very benign. If you're doing it solo/small group, recommend Hyb Bunkhouse (http://www.medi-gifts.com/en/bunkhouse.aspx) in Dolgellau

El's 400 successfully completed for SR25 (whatever that turns out to be).  Surprisingly excellent ride.  Started from Selsey 4.15am  to get to start point (Chichester) 4.47am.  Excellent early dawn section over Old Winchester Hill.  Deer sticking their heads out of yet-to-be harvested field on the way up to Beacon Hill.  Sutton Scotney at 7.10am for much needed cup of tea.  Usual drag up the gentle side of Hackpen Hill (I much prefer doing this the steep way and then having a longer descent) and then some new roads across to Leigh Delamere Services (11am) for a late breakfast.  Tailwind helped me back to Sutton Scotney (via a different route with a section in common with the Midhurst-Hay 600) for another big feed at 2.30pm.  Got caught up in Goodwood Revival traffic around Midhurst (overtaken by among other things a WWII ambulance, several generations of Jeeps, a James Bond Aston Martin, a DB9, a Shelby Cobra, a couple of E-Types and other things far too weird and wonderful to recognise).  Arrived Midhurst about 5pm.  More traffic helped me to keep the pace up to Pease Pottage (long drag after Horsham) at 7pm.  Struggled on the night-time section to Storrington and delved into the last of the bonk rations to get up the long drag after Houghton.  Passed the George at Eartham with great regret (at least I did get to use this on a 100k perm earlier in the year with CET junior) and Arrivee at Chichester 10.21pm.  Back to Selsey to get a kebab from Box Rocks before it closed and then kip in the caravan before work the next day (did doze off at one point)

Would recommend this as a 400 perm.  There are no horrible hills, the controls all work, excellent route sheet, with notes on riders who had put a gpx together and control points that work pretty much 24 hours.  Probably wouldn't do it in close proximity to the Hailsham 400 or Midhurst-Hay 600 calendar routes as it shares some sections, but is a good advert for those rides.  Only thing missing was an el Supremo feed.  He was only a mile off the route at Upperton on one of his calendar events but he would have been packed up and gone by the time I got there  :(

MULL IN AUTUMN

I’m planning to ride the Port Navigation 200k permanent event on Saturday 20th October.

I'm aiming to start from the Corran Ferry car park around 7.30am - heading first for Kinlochleven then Oban with a view to the 11.45 ferry to Craignure (it’s 86k without much climbing).

Thereafter my plan is to catch either the 15.40 or 16.25 ferry from Fishnish.  I’m going to check in advance to establish if Liz’s café at Lochaline is going to be open or not.

That leaves the 50k or so to Ardgour before dark and the final ferry journey.  The Corran Ferry is at XX.00 and XX.30 (though the Ardgour Inn is a splendid waiting room especially when all the riding has been completed).  From memory, last time I rode the event on this schedule I just scraped onto the 18.30.

Both the ferries (and my participation) are weather dependent, so subject to confirmation in the day or two beforehand.
Fingers crossed for a nice autumn day.

Weather permitting, I plan to do a diy by gps on Sunday 14 Oct.  Starting in Langdon Beck (Alston if YHA shut) in the pennines and taking the shortest route with intermediate controls in Hexham, Allenheads and Garragill.  I'm not local to the area but past rides suggest a hilly 100 with around 2500m of climb.  Would be delighted to have some company who is prepared for a longish day. Pm me if it tickles your pickle.

I hadn't realised that it clashed with a calendar event, which I would normally seek to avoid (too much respect for other organisers, especially Lucy).  However this is the only date that in the next few months that I will already be visiting Lochaber so will stick to my plan A to ride this on the 20th Oct.

Feel free to ride on another day, but IIRC under the Calmac winter timetable (after 20th Oct) it gets a bit trickier as the timetable presents fewer options.

btw - Jean has been in touch to confirm that the cafe will be open at Lochaline on 20th Oct.

Myself and GrahamG from this forum are doing this. Any company is most welcome. Best to mention, we will be riding fixed so if you are on gears and particularly nippy you might find it slow going, on the other hand we will be aiming to push on round as quickly as possible and keep breaks short. I know it is very short notice, but I am aiming to do an AAA 100k tomorrow, Sunday 10 (whoops 11th) Nov, around the Lake District, if anyone fancies it.  Normally start in Backbarrow, but don't mind starting at Troutbeck Bridge (both about 20mins from M6 J36).  Anticlockwise http://goo.gl/maps/1XLjV but in reality avoids main road out of Kendal by going through Burneside.  Pretty steep, but I go slow.  I also did this 1/1/12 and may well repeat for 1/1/13.  PM if up for it.

Considering a high speed 300k on Saturday 24th November - route would be Basingstoke - Crewkerne (with brevidence stop in Salisbury) - Wareham - Romsey - Basingstoke which is 10k overdistance as the Google Maps fly but probably 20k overdistance as I'm not cycling on the A31 across the New Forest.

Start early to allow main road bash down the A30 to Crewkerne before it gets busy.

If the roads are dry might even do on racebike.

Mrs CET is in Staffordshire with CET Juniors so have a pass

But the ride itself was fine.

I'm not sure if I can do the Solstice ride in December, so I was considering a Cumbrian 200 for the first weekend in December.  Anyone fancy joining in the planning/riding.  I had this in mind for starters...

anti-clockwise http://goo.gl/maps/VFYHq (but west side of Thirlmere)

starting Newby Bridge or Troutbeck Bridge, a bit hilly but nothing desperate (except for that brute out of Keswick).

I won't be able to do first weekend because of our big children's Christmas concert weekend.  A shame.  That road past Thirlmere is absolutely stunning.

I'm keen to ride a couple of 200km perms during the following dates.
Monday 26th November.
15th, 22nd 23rd December or between 27th December and the 30th December.
I'm based in Bristol,  I prefer Steve Poultons perms as a couple of them start close to home.
Anybody playing out?

15th or 22nd Dec look OK for me. Probably weather-dependent though - I'm not chasing any awards ATM. Which ones do you have in mind for this time of year?

Edit: 15th now has a time constraint for me (eve).

Hey guys I'm in Bristol. Doing a calendar 200 on 8th December. Might not have the willpower or time for another 200 in the month but if I do I could join you.

Bairdy, next Monday 25th I'm off work, did you want to do a ride then?

Not that I'm expecting any takers (brrr!) but I am planning to do a clockwise circuit of Cumbria on Saturday, if anyone is looking for something to do.  S Lakes > Birker Fell > Kirkstile (Loweswater) > Whinlatter > Wigton > S Lakes.

201k PM for approved gps checkpoints

CURSES! - temp crept up overnight, everything got very soggy and then froze solid before dawn.  Result - a thin layer of water ice on all the minor roads where the seepage lines are.  Back in one piece, but the front wheel isn't as round as it used to be :(

cheers - back from lbs and now have a round wheel again.  Was surprised to see how many cyclists were out - the main roads are obviously in reasonable nick.  The consolation prize is that at least I can watch the rugby on the TV this afternoon and I might even try again tomorrow - though perhaps a little more cautiously.  :)

edit - current forecast says 'no ice' on Saturday night into Sunday for the 9th Dec, so hopefully do a re-run if anyone wants to come up North for a hilly 200!

Closest one of my rides is the Sussexy Beast 150, which could be started from Balcombe (if the "permit to travel" machine is working at the station or the village shop is open).  Route outline is on the AUK website (also, if you search for "Sussexy Beast" on ridewithgps it will show the profile of the ride etc).

Otherwise, you are looking at Uckfield possibly being the closest start (Down to Downs 100 and AAA Milne 100) or Forest Row (AAA Milne 100 and Around Weald Expedition 200).

Dave's 400km permanent starts in Pease Pottage by the way.  It's a straightforward route but rather generic (in my opinion); one for later in the year if you want an easy 400 for points or SR purposes.

http://goo.gl/maps/kQkms by gps this saturday round the South Lakes, start at Backbarrow (20 mins from M6 on A590) if anyone is up for it.   Involves hills/AAA, so a bit weather dependant regarding icy roads.  Same route as the La'al Lakeland 100 Perm, but less faff with controls.

Also Steve Snook's Silverdale & Wharfedale starting at Settle 2nd Feb is pencilled in.  Did it on a MTB in the snow last year and am hoping for better weather.

I'm doing this 200km DIY from Stroud on Saturday with a friend, happy for anyone else to join anywhere on route if they want to.

An early start from Stroud, a warm-up to Winchcombe, lunch in Ross, through the Forest to a little trip down nostalgia lane for me, round the Severn then a sting in the tail before home.

I am very slow so it will take me at least 12 hours at a 17kph ave, not necessarily including stops.

As previously indicated elsewhere on yACF, I'm planning a ride for Sunday April 14th.  I'm staying Saturday and Sunday nights in Middleton in Teesdale, so have (with Deano's help) identified Nigel Hall's "J38" as a suitable 200, which I shall do as a GPS DIY.  The route is (controls except where in parenthesis) Middleton in Teesdale, (Brough), Tebay, Kirkby Lonsdale, Dent, (Hawes), Leyburn, (Richmond), Aldbrough St John, (Barnard Castle) and Middleton.

Anyone interested in joining me?  I don't intend to rush, and anticipate 11 hours (+/- 1 hour)

Version 2 of a trial 200k, taking in Wasdale Head, with scenery throughout, tomorrow.  Route is http://goo.gl/maps/5rrOa
I am hoping that this will achieve a fairly traffic free 200 on a BHM.  We shall see.  Post-breakfast start from Troutbeck Bridge.

Just noticed that my route will be passing beneath the fells of Great Cockup and Little Cockup.  Hope this is not an omen!

Done.  I am thinking about this for an event, as it really is light on traffic and stunning scenery.  Anyone Gps-ing in the Lakes this summer, let me know what you think.  Lakes School > Calbeck > Newlands/Borrowdale > Wasdale Head (via road) > Ulpha > Hawkshead > Lakes School.  Parking at defunct pool next to school.  Water at loos in Caldbeck/loos in Gosforth/Wasdale Head (behind pub)/Coniston petrol stn (tap R of building).  Lots of descents, 203ish k.

Two of us will be riding Stonehaven-Inverness-Stonehaven on 22/23 August 2013. Start time to be determined but note its a Thursday start. Eck approved.

Route is 400km via Fettercairn, Ballater, Grantown to Inverness, and Lossiemouth, Dufftown back to Stonehaven. Includes the Cairn o Mount, Gairnshiel (aka Bastard Hill no 1), Lecht and the Cabrach. So its most of your favourite Snow Roads hills done the other way round*. For good measure we finish over the Slug.

PM me if interested.

I'm going to be in the Alps to watch the Tour de France go by this year, basing myself at le Bourg d' Oisans. The day before the Tour does it's two ascents of Alp d' Huez there is a time trial further south in Embrun. This will be on Wednesday the 17th of July.

Instead of watching that I'm planning a little DIY 200k loop to keep my RRTY going - something along these lines that heads south-east of le Bourg: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2732096 .

Anyone wants to do it with me I'm aiming to finish within 11 hours with a couple of 45-minute cafe breaks along the way. Lots of climbing but no major big climbs I'm staying off the beaten track and mostly taking in obscure cols. I'm hoping to convince some sportive types I know who will also be in le Bourg then to come along for the ride.

Short notice, but I am planning on doing a 201k anti-clockwise tour of the Lakes on Tuesday, starting about 8:00am from Troutbeck Bridge (Windermere) which is 20 mins from M6 J36.  This will be a second trial of a potential calendar event for next year.  Up to Caldbeck, around Skiddaw, Newlands, Loweswater, Wasdale, Duddon, Broughton Mills, Coniston, Hawkshead and back to start.  Scenic enough, but no Hardknott, Wrynose or Honister.  No rushing round - about 12 hours.

Out of courtesy, check with MemSec (Holl & Back Organiser) that he's happy for you to ride his route as a DIY (he may well have useful info).

Then assuming agreement with MemSec, submit as a DIY with relevant controls.

So DIY may not be needed - possible to start/finish perms off route, subject to organiser agreement.  I only mention because, as someone who offers perms, members doing regular perms as DIYs is a pet(ty) hate of mine.  Mike W is a nice chap, so will be able to offer guidance as Chris suggests)

For the record, we did this ride yesterday.
Stayed mostly dry, which was a bonus.

I found it unusually hard on account of not being on a bike for a month!
Spotted various wildlife along the way: several fawns springing about amongst the farmers' crops etc.

Was flagging at about 300k, but the 300k stop @ Aviemore had an all-u-can-eat pizza and pasta buffet, and that put my batteries back in the right way.
They were, however, pound-stretcher zinc-carbons, not Lithium-Ions!

Drunk-o'clock as we passed thru Nethy Bridge, and then the big climbs over the Lecht in the dark were a little surreal.
Last 50k I had to honk out of the saddle to keep the dozies at bay.
Reckon I saw a single Perseid Meteor near the end, or it may have been a hallucination.

Thx to Pingu for dragging me round.

A crossover drive is the now-normal tandem crankset - triple chainrings on the stoker RH crank, single timing chainring on both captain and stoker LH crank and bare captain RH crank. Tandems (particularly racing tandems) often used to often have a single timing chainring on the captain's RH crank, double timing + final drive chainring on the stoker's RH crank and bare cranks otherwise.

And of course, for lovers of Really Long Chains, there's the Front Crossover Drive option  :o.

Never seen one in action - word on the web seems to suggest the long waggy chain can be an issue.

I ran that set-up on my first tandem (SWB Gitane lady-back) for quite a while. Provided the stoker BB axle wasn't too short, all was well. I imagine that stop-start pedallers might have more trouble catching the stoker crank on the chain though.

As neither of us has finished a 600 this year, McNasty and I are doing The Twilight on my tandem this weekend starting early Saturday from chez McNasty hoping to qualify for our SRs. Said tandem has now a crossover drive triple rather than the original direct drive single ring. This has given me lots of headaches due to the short wheelbase and close clearances but hopefully will be OK. Company welcome for this recce of Howfs, bus shelters etc.

Whats one of them then?

Used to see lots of French tandems with a long chain x-over, so triple chainset on the front BB. Chain usually required a bit of management near the stoker's ankles.

Planning to ride my Wrekin to Sea 300k perm on Sat 7th Sept with joolz. Other company welcome

http://www.aukweb.net/perms/detail/JHA04/ (http://www.aukweb.net/perms/detail/JHA04/)

For those whose memories stretch back a couple of years this is my old Heart of Wales nee Wrekin to Sea calendar event. A trip across the blue remembered hills of Shropshire and the green deserts of mid Wales to the Cambrian Coast at Borth. "Better than the Elenith" according to more than one experienced AUK.

I'm sure I can manage a spare bed / floor space for anyone in need of somewhere to kip before or after.

Lacking an August 200, I will probably have a trip around Manotea's Ditchling Devil next weekend - Saturday or Sunday - yet to decide.

Pace will be a little more relaxed that my last time around the ride with only 15 minutes stopped. I like the Wiston tearooms, so would like to stop this time!

Anyone interested?

I'm aiming to do a traditional DIY 300k from the Lake District in mid/late October if anyone is interested.  Planning to leave early, 5:00am-ish from Windermere, so over the Kirkstone in the dark and get to Carlisle in the evening, after the traffic has died down, so dark thereafter.

http://goo.gl/maps/lxIMA

Let me know if you fancy joining in.  There's an outside chance I might do it on 17 Oct, but more likely in my half term week, which starts on 26 Oct.  If we've met on the road, there is the chance of a floor to sleep on the night before/after.

Would expect to ride at about 16-17 kph overall.

Paul, I'm really intrigued by this but I'm doubtful if I'll be able to get away.  However, it's just possible!  When you say traditional DIY, do you mean non- gps and therefore no AAA (I think it would have at least 4 points)?  That wouldn't bother me, by the way but I'd toy with the idea of trying it as a DIY by gps in the hope that my Garmin 200 would just about last the course - it did the Elenydd!

I was wondering about buying a gps 'card' in addition to the normal card, in case it was worth AAA, but not have to worry if my batteries failed.  Likewise I would write off the normal card if the batteries lasted.  However, I'm not convinced about the AAA as there is an awful lot of flat ground between the hills, so I haven't done anything about that. I'll message you when I decide - if the weather is good, I'm still aiming for 17 Oct (strike day) as my first choice, but I'm not flogging round the Pennines in the wet!

A DIY version of the Port Navigation is scheduled for 22 March 2014 starting/finishing in Ballachulish.

http://goo.gl/maps/SYJC6

The plan is to start 8.30am ---> 12.00 ferry Oban to Craignure then the 16.25 Fishnish --> Lochaline (plan B = 17.10).

Its a tough old 50k Lochaline to Ardgour so Im expecting that at least the final 12k after the Corran Ferry to be in the dark (Corran Ferry from Ardgour is at XX.00 and XX.30).

The nature of the route mean that its really only suited to verification by GPS

As part of my RRTRY, in March I am planning a DIY Perm by GPS 200.

Starting in Whitchurch (Shropshire) at about 07:00 hours, then to Audlem, then Denbigh, Llyn Brenig and back via Llangollen.

I average about 9 hours, but anticipate 9 hours and 30 mins due to the climb to Llyn Brenig.

I'll go to Lyn Brenig via the A543, not the "Road To Hell" mentioned in Simon Warren's book.

Plan to take stops in Ruthin, and a cafe on the A5 whose name escapes me.

Long range forecast for Sunday March 2nd looks promising.

Any takers?

I'm riding a 200 km DIY from Cambridge on Saturday 5th April. Start 08:00 at the junction of Brookside and Lensfield Road (http://ctc-cambridge.org.uk/startsunday); controls at Whitwell, Wendover, and Marston Moretaine. Route will be something like this. (http://goo.gl/pZbxdX) I'll probably take 11 hours or more as the section from Whitwell to Wendover across the Chilterns is fairly hilly.

Considering Cambrian 4B in late August

Chepstow - Hay-on-Wye – Llanwrtyd Wells - Tregaron - Lampeter - New Quay - Llandeilo - Brecon - Monmouth - Chepstow

Probably do a Friday lunchtime to Saturday lunchtime with catnap by the roadside.  Train to Bristol Parkway and ride over to Chepstow for the start.  Proper hardcore but stunning scenery.  Any takers?

Alternative would be the harder Cambrian 4F

Aberdare – Hay-on-Wye – Knighton – Llanidloes – Devils Bridge – Builth Wells – Aberaeron – Llandeilo – Aberdare.  Similar approach but starting from Aberdare train station, warm up over the valleys and Brecon Beacons, with three crossings of the Cambrian mountains along the A44, Cwmystwyth and finally Devil's Staircase.  Took a lot of working out of controls to get that to happen  ;D  :smug:

Possibly Company on my 200km DIY by GPS rides in Lancashire, or you could use my Check Points on the Lancashire Cycleways North and South.  Each route comes out at a little under 202km, but it took quite a lot of time and effort to get the right Check Points on the Route.

The Northern Loop distance is almost the same as the actual road route.  The Southern will possibly be 215km on the road, but not too bad.  Contact me if you want the deatails.  ;)

It's forecast to be a bit wild this weekend coming, but I am hoping to ride https://goo.gl/maps/pujEu (https://goo.gl/maps/pujEu)on the weekend of 17/18 Jan, depending on the forecast.  The route is South Lakes, Brough, Leyburn, SouthLakes taking in the hills SW of Kendal (twice), across the M6 to an easier section to Brough, Tan Hill and Grinton Ranges (ouch), Wensleydale, Sedbergh and back to the hills out of Kendal.  It's a tad over 200k and I estimate about 3.5 AAA.  All bets off if it is 'orrible.  PM me on here if you fancy it.

Maybe the day before the sold out calendar event on Saturday 24th Jan. (Event is on the Sunday)
Anybody fancy it?

I've got one too. Can't do Saturday though. Any day in the week next week you can do?

I wouldn't have fancied it anyway, but did you ride it?

Weather was too bad, so I put it off for a week.  Just having a beer or two to recover.  It was a bit icy for the first few hours, but mainly soft stuff and some old snow drifts on Tan Hill which I walked across.  I was very cautious on the descents.  The wind blew me up Tan Hill and over Grinton to Leyburn, but  when I got on the 'easy' run up Wensleydale I could barely manage 16kph into a stiff breeze.  A restorative coffee at the Spar in Sedbergh was excellent and it got me to Kendal.  The wind was less of an issue thereafter but the hills on the last leg are beasts, literally in the case of Beast Banks.  However, it was a balmy 5 degrees by then, so I could do the descents at normal pace.  The garmin said nearly 4000m, but with elevation correction was much less.  Will see what the AAA man says, probably 3.5 but it felt like 3.75 or 4.  Got home and almost immediately had a call from son #2 who had missed the bus from Kendal... how I enjoyed getting into the car to go and get him...

edit - I found out how cold it was at The Tan Hill Inn where I stopped to go to the loo and have a sandwich.  When I arrived, I parked the bike and was faffing, I put my gloves on the floor and one of the inners froze to the ground!

I have got my spies out to check the condition of the higher passes, but I think pretty much all the roads are bone dry now and no rain is forecast for several days.  I am therefore planning some 'AAA getting' on Sunday (8 Feb) in The Lakes.  Hoping to do the vast majority in daylight (getting nearly 11 hours now).  https://goo.gl/maps/3f5av - a 'there and back' route for 200km, which is not something I normally do, but it fits with my plan of avoiding tree shrouded, potentially damp (ice) areas.

Edinburgh-Bath DIY

Not sure if this the best place to post this, as I'm not anticipating people leaping to join me, but I'm beginning to think about a head-down, no-frills Edinburgh-Bath DIY later in the year, as the means to a cheap(er) night on the sauce in the Star, in Bath, before returning to Bonnie Scotia by train the following day. I wonder if some of the cognoscenti that tread these boards can give me any tips on a sensible southbound route from beyond Carlisle. Is there a well-worn, straightforward NW to SW route that someone could share with me? Conversely, are there any roads that although they might look benign on the map are dreadful and best avoided? My f-i-l lives in West Brom (poor chap) and I would probably look to overnight there. With any luck I might be able to tweak this into a 600, although I'm not sure what state I would be in for a night on the batter at the end of it if I determined to get there <40hrs. Still... all valuable PBP training.

Many thanks.

I'm planning to trial a new 400k on April 11th.

Route is here. http://goo.gl/maps/Y7i0N (http://goo.gl/maps/Y7i0N)

This is just the shortest possible route for the purposes of getting the distance in. I'm intending to skirt south around Darlington and head through Yarm before pushing on to Saltburn on Sea. Working on that bit of the route now. I'm intending to do something along the lines of a 10am start from Malton.

Any company welcome.

Thanks for the support. Just writing out a routesheet and already taking out some of the less enjoyable roads. As I said originally, this is just the shortest possible route between control points. Other than the section between Barnard Castle and Saltburn on Sea, any particular roads you think need to be circumvented?

The roads through Boro and on to Darlo are pretty hellish.  Avoid the A66 like the plague.  For a DIY the best I can do is this (https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=Unknown+road&daddr=Malton+to:Ripon+Rd%2FB6265+to:54.0455091,-2.0286114+to:54.0758791,-2.720647+to:54.0786119,-2.7515458+to:54.0671221,-2.7958449+to:54.066612,-2.803996+to:Lancaster+Rd%2FB5321+to:54.0666444,-2.8042839+to:54.0670159,-2.7955056+to:54.0775238,-2.7345396+to:54.0760179,-2.7190864+to:Hawes+to:54.4373102,-1.9964436+to:Barnard+Castle+to:54.5318513,-1.6502283+to:54.4659999,-1.5428394+to:54.4557344,-1.4384453+to:54.4963695,-1.3437042+to:54.485656,-1.235754+to:54.5365559,-1.058932+to:Saltburn-by-the-Sea+to:Stakesby+Rd%2FB1416&hl=en&ll=54.520484,-1.572762&spn=0.124144,0.315857&sll=54.474427,-1.451569&sspn=0.124284,0.315857&geocode=FahKPwMdHFP2_w%3BFQQQOgMdN9Pz_ymDedp00NJ4SDEUVvLJ65iTHQ%3BFdlGOQMdEjHl_w%3BFUWrOAMdvQvh_ym1In6RvfV7SDGUv1XbTUEULw%3BFechOQMdeXzW_ynTwfd1wIJ8SDHOnsxkM3gfTA%3BFZMsOQMdxwPW_ylLO95bNJ18SDEmV8kMZY6BMA%3BFbL_OAMdvFbV_ykbUAD1dp18SDFm3jbY7DHSWw%3BFbT9OAMd5DbV_ylJa75DnJ18SDH-A7E5R2zXug%3BFboIOQMdBH3U_w%3BFdT9OAMdxTXV_ylJa75DnJ18SDH_A7E5R2zXug%3BFUf_OAMdD1jV_ykbUAD1dp18SDFn3jbY7DHSWw%3BFVMoOQMdNUbW_ynjtQBdyIJ8SDHp1UBUxrN8Gg%3BFXEiOQMdkoLW_ylXYKGq6oJ8SDHuSxBPsun5Bg%3BFROdPAMdYXLe_ykNAsZWnG58SDFCK_hxYTQEmA%3BFb6lPgMdZYnh_yllBsW96z18SDEZ3gM0ukSXKw%3BFYRLQAMdY6Xi_ykxgk2ZXyN8SDGCQ2aqojXioA%3BFQsXQAMdzNHm_ynTr06Eyp1-SDEYWVn0YfCLkg%3BFc8VPwMdSXXo_ymxygN4_ph-SDHhJudiPUrEOA%3BFbbtPgMdEw3q_ykN2YKYsZd-SDFr2EBcONzyvQ%3BFXGMPwMdKH_r_yktf5Pea5R-SDGsGM8HyS61Pg%3BFZhiPwMd1iTt_ykniGLZFut-SDGYWfSPE6W-8g%3BFWspQAMdjNfv_ymvJoqfX-9-SDF8dl2K4s25yg%3BFTjZQAMd4h7x_ynzVH1oQuF-SDGvp9M6ADU9dw%3BFcZLPwMdiVP2_w&gl=uk&dirflg=w&doflg=ptk&mra=dvme&mrsp=17&sz=12&via=3,4,5,6,7,9,10,11,12,14,16,17,18,19,20,21&t=m&z=12), which keeps you off the crazy roads while 'only' adding 11 km.  The rest of it looks fine to me.

Thanks,

I plotted out the same route from Barnard Castle to Yarm and then followed the straight road up through Marton to Eston. My reasoning being it should be fairly quiet in the small hours when I expect to be passing through there.

I like the look of yours and I think I'd probably use that instead. Also going to tweak that entry into Ripon as well as that's at the risk of being pretty busy even though it's short.

If I manage to get it into the calendar then I'll probably look at moving the west coast up to Hest Bank.

You might like to get rid of the ride through Morecambe/Lancaster by replacing the distance with a visit to Sedbergh after controlling short of Lancs itself - we use the filling station at Lansil.  This is also an easier way to get to Hawes, though not as picturesque as the way over Newby Head.  The section between Hawes and BC is great but strenuous.

Completely avoids the A66 and the Trunk Road, and avoids the really horrific bit of the A174 (the Parkway). Those are the bits you do not want to ride. There's a cycle path along the A174 from Eston (look for the underpass just before you join the A174), which is OK. Ladgate Lane's a bit shite, and I really dislike Leven Bank, but it gets the job done.

I'd (personally) avoid the A169 out of Whitby except at night or early in the morning, it's full of daytrippers gawping at the abbey and the Hole, but I appreciate you probably won;t want to ride the alternatives...

Oh, you can shortcut the Hawes-Barnie bit by going via Tan Hill and the track down Sleightholme Moor to Bowes, which is ace.

Deano's right.  I'd think twice about using some of those roads for a prospective calendar ride in the day, but at night they're what you want.  In the daytime, the lanes south of there are quite pleasant so I'd consider routing further south (e.g. through Dalton), adding in an info and lopping off some km elsewhere.

Sedburgh kind of defeats the aim to do a coast to coast to coast in a 400.

I think I like Pharti's M'boro avoidance the most so will probably head round that way.

I did look at Tan Hill but the lane off Sleightholme Moor seemed to be unpaved according to Google Maps. Also not sure about a longer section on either the A67 or A66 there.

Pharti, not sure which Dalton you mean, there are a couple within striking distance of the route. Generally I don't like info controls so was hoping to avoid them.

Thanks for all the feedback though, much appreciated.

I'm guessing he means Dalton-on-Tees, i.e. staying south of the Tees past Yarm and Darlo.

Sleightholme Moor is a blast, and a piss-easy bit of riding down to Barnie. You needn't ride along the A66, you go under it at Bowes, and along the A67 to Barnie, which is a cracking downhill, and it's not that busy as there's a weight limit on the bridge at Barnie, so not much heavy traffic goes that way. I think Revellhino planned to use the Sleightholme Moor bit on a perm recently. It saves you going over the Stang, but you may prefer tarmac to gravelly offroad. With massive potholes (the photos boab linked to are from four years ago, the sharkholes are back now).

I think as it'll likely be dark and cold I'll leave that off. I don't want to end up doing something daft on my tod away from a road. If it makes it to the calendar then riders will have the freedom to exploit that as a Cyclocross Larrington.

Dalton is on the Pharti alternative so I'll be going there. 411k isn't really pushing any overdistance boundaries.

If anyone wants to join me on a gps version of the La'al Lakeland 100km on Thursday 9 April, PM me.  It's exceptionally scenic.  I'm just double checking the routesheet, so might be going a bit slow - maybe 6hrs.

...and again

I am riding the Westmorland Spartans 300 on the May Day bank holiday weekend to double check the route sheet and also to get it validated for myself as a PBP qualifier.  I might be going rather slowly and may also have a support vehicle at some of the controls, as I am coming back from injury and have not been able to ride a bike this last week.  Anyone fancy a long day but with a bit of tlc PM me.  If you want to 'camp out' at HQ for the actual event and want to do this as a validated helpers ride, that should be possible.

I will be on holiday in the Pendle area of Lancashire (Near Clitheroe) from 23rd to 30th May. I am looking to do a couple of rides North through the Dales. I've earmarked rides based on the Dales Delight 200Km http://ridewithgps.com/trips/1516373 and the Blanchland Blinder 300Km http://ridewithgps.com/routes/7847293 but am open to more sceninc offers. I would expect these to take me around 9-10 hours and 15-16 hours respectively in good weather. I am flexible on days at the moment but would prefer to pick any good weather days where possible (do they get good weather so far north?). Would anyone like to join me?

Welcome! Certainly you can set up and ride DIYs in Spain. You can enter with any of the DIY organisers (or, if going for validation by GPS, any of the ones who deal with GPS DIYs).

Happy Riding!

Calais - Brindisi 2600km at 200km/day average. Flexible on the date but thinking of an early July start.

Anyone have the time to give this AUK classic a try?

A friend has had to pull out so I'm doing My First Audaxtm on 12 September, the Cambridge Saffron 100 Perm (http://www.camaudax.uk/rides/cambridge-saffron-100/) as a solo. I'm not able to make any calendar events until long into October, so this seems like a not-too-harrowing way to dip my toe into the water.

I acknowledge the slight creepiness of my first forum post being a request for company but I'm not a serial killer, I promise!

Planning to kick off at 0930 Kings Parade, trains permitting.

I'm planning to ride a 200 from Windermere during half term if anyone fancies coming along, exact date is weather dependant.  It's a second check of a calendar event in planning, hopefully to run Autumn 2016.  Controls at Fell Foot (Newby Bridge), Tan Hill, Barnard Castle and Muker Village Shop/Tea Room.  Involves a little bit of rough stuff between Tan Hill and Bowes and is a hilly day out.

Riding Iddu's EWE Baaa 200k Perm this Sat 21st Nov (though with a low risk of being delayed to Sun 22nd).  Starting in Theale ~0730 and initially heading to that there london  Company welcome on all or part of the ride.

Sunday 22nd - planning on 200km Waterloo (London) to Folkstone and Rye. Depart Waterloo 5am aiming to arrive Rye before 3pm (or faster as a group) including a lunch stop at a nice pub. 1,800m climbing in total.

Beautiful weather forecast - sun and tail winds - so be prepared for any weather other than that!

PM if interested and I'll send route info - B roads and lanes in the main.

Edit: it was so cold when I left that my water bottles froze!

Simon I would probably be up for that. (I've already got that day booked off) From Hungerford to ... somewhere!

I'll ride from home, so I doubt I'll enter the perm - I don't believe Iddu allows "off-route" start/finish, and riding over to the route twice to get a receipt is just pointless miles in December!

Will PM ya ...

I think I've a few people out to ride this on Saturday the 30th of April, but more nutters always welcome. A 300 km around the Dales with a piss-easy finish excepting Walworth Bank and a flat main-road blast to start. Some hills in the middle, far from the toughest the Dales have to offer, and some very giving descents. I planned it as a good route to ride on fixed. Which it is.

The current plan is to start around 5 am in Newton Aycliffe, or around half five in Darlo. Approximately 17 hours with a quick coffee at the bakery in Boroughbridge, a garage stop in Ilkley, a slap-up meal at the Wharfe View Tea Room in Burnsall, another sit-down meal in Dent or Sedbergh, and a top-up at the Co Op in Middleton, with the Teesdale Hotel as an alternative.

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/12731964

I've tweaked my original route for a Newton Aycliffe start, but this may change to a Darlo start (and a slightly tougher route, but an easier finish) if the Aycliffe posse don't turn up.

Like to CET but can't due to the date; plus your 'fast' sounds alarming!  However if you're interested I am ECE'ing the Cogidubnus CC 200 up to 300k next Sat 6th Aug.  Out via a Tadley (4AM?)-Overton-Basingstoke-Staines-RonT (95km), then a 10km top-up at the end to Clapham for the train home.

Would love to, but I'm already on the brownie point limit for this year, having to restart my season after DNFs in my 400 and 600.  The latest weather forecast is for it to start raining earlier, so it may well end up being a head down bash.  However, do want to keep my record of an SR every year since 2005 going if I can.

There being a lack of easy 200km calendar events in central southern parts during December I shall likely be rounding off my 5th year of RRTY with my own perm (http://www.aukweb.net/perms/detail/PL01/)

It's a relatively easy route, but not devoid of interest, certainly has been appreciated by those who've done it as a perm.

Provsional date is 4 December - but if enough folks want to join me on a different day, I might be persuaded to change.

Family commitments make it difficult for me to do 1000km events in July & August, when they are most often scheduled, plus I'm volunteering on LEL, so I'm thinking about Els 1000 next year in May, on a 380km - 350km - 270km or similar schedule with overnights in Travelodges

I'm going to ride to Whitchurch this year.

All eleven of them.  Starting with Whitchurch Hampshire, then Whitchurch Canonicorum (Dorset), Whitchurch Devon, Whitchurch Bristol, Whitchurch Cardiff, Whitchurch Pembrokeshire, Whitchurch Herefordshire, Whitchurch Shropshire, Whitchurch Warwickshire, Whitchurch Buckinghamshire and Whitchurch-on-Thames before circling back to Whitchurch Hampshire.

It started off as a silly suggestion by Mrs CET, but then on investigation it worked out at 1300km, which allows a more relaxed speed, and there are premier inns or travelodges at all the right places for a 4.5 day 4 night ride, with not too much night riding and good roads for the night sections.

Then I realised it was like a retrospective of my Audax life so far, starting off with a club run route, before going into Sean Shaw Wessex territory, a section of the Kernow & SW, before sampling the now defunct Tavistock rides and Dartmoor Devil, then picking up a favourite Cambrian series leg (Carmarthen - Brecon) and then heading up to Mersey Roads territory, with a skirting visit to Marsh Gibbon before some local Audax routes to finish.

So now its a plan.  May probably as June and July are too busy with family, then there's cooking on the LEL and Silver Wedding to fill up the year.

"The Four Countries 600" is starting at Dunkerque Gare at 6am on Saturday 20th May if anyone fancies it.

It'll be a DIY by GPS using a mandatory route, starting in France, then heading through Belgium and Netherlands as far as the German border, before turning round and coming home again (by a different route), with a sleep stop in Namur. Route details still need firming up but the outward leg will be mostly flat while the return leg is a bit lumpier (possibly including some classic bergs).

I've already got one clubmate definitely signed up and a couple more interested.

Not quite as ambitious as CET's "11 Whitchurches 1300" perhaps, but I'm already hatching plans for a Five Countries 1000 next year, adding Luxembourg to the mix...

Ballahulish Glen Coe, DIY 300

I'm planning a DIY 300 from Ballahulish on Sat 1st April 2017.

Ballahulish - Oban - Tarbert - Strachur - Benderloch - Ballahulish.

Anyone free that weekend and fancy joining me? I'm staying at SYHA Ballahulish and planning on setting off around 6am. There is a ferry journey of 6km at Tarbert and the ride is ~305km.

Will be riding the Denmead 400 route (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/21385424 (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/21385424)) on Friday 16th June. I'm planning on starting around 22:30 as previous riders have suggested this makes for an improved journey back (e.g. http://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=49478.0 (http://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=49478.0))

Happy to have company on the road.

Short notice but I'm riding the south-bound LEL route from Pocklington, riding out from / to York, on Wednesday 12th, returning on the north-bound route - hopefully back late Thursday 13th.

I should be setting off around 9.30am from Pocklington once I've had something to munch!

By no means definite but after a rather flat SR I thought I might reclaim some honour with a ride from home (W4) London Wales London on Saturday. We shall see. :)

Well the ride did happen, just need to process the day...

The aim was to take on a stretching ride to find out where I was, fitness and otherwise after a year most notable for its DNFs, and LWL fitted the bill admirably.  The answer was not too bad - pour moi - but I really do need to sharpen up if I want to take on tougher events and be fit and fast enough to complete them comfortably rather than simply scrape by. There's a high difference between the two, and too much of the latter is wearing. It has to be said focusing on the former can be just as bad but that's not the area which needs work right now so I'll deal with that problem when I get there.

I'm going to have to look at gearing and whether to continue with fixed for longer more challenging rides. I generally run a biggish gear  - currently on 86" - as a strategy for developing leg strength. but when it comes to events, whilst longer gears are fine for tooling around flatlands or shorter hilly rides when you can throw energy at the road, life can become difficult as hills become steeper/longer/more frequent. I stuck with 86" for quite a while this weekend, only walking Symonds Yat, Hawkesbury Monument (I made the climb out of Chepstow, which is hard enough. What climb is that, I hear you say?)  but later that night, I turned my wheel for 76". I don't like doing that as it fills like cheating - ride what you brung - but fixing unknown hills on dark enclosed roads when you're on the limit is really tough. Having said that I suspect my last Dean/7A was on 72" and on the Brian Chapman I've  geared down to 71/66, switching to 66 sometime after Harlech on the run into Snowdonia, so mebbe I was doing better than I thought. But this takes me back to the getting round comfortably issue, as I'm usually on the time limit. The other learning point for the day is to be get more sleep before events, as I had a massive attack of the dozies around 00:30, and had to stop for a roadside nap. Once through that though I was good to go but by now the fun was gone and it was all about getting home. It was a good day to be out in the countryside though, with fine weather and it was only slightly chilly once the sun went down. My gilet is pretty crap and it was slightly too warm for my jacket; a long sleeve merino jersey would have been perfect. Next time out though I suspect my jacket will be fine. Winter draws on...

Mattc provided welcome company from Thame to Stowe, and definitely helped that leg go faster.  Excellent!

I too have had company from the ghostly rider known as MattC from Thame to the Oxfordshire borders on those very roads.  He appears and chatters away about dead badgers and vanishes as suddenly as he arises.  I have heard tell that it is dangerous to look into his eyes

Hi All,

I'm planning to have a crack at the Cambrian 6A, starting from Monmouth, on the 3rd May. I'm hoping to ride it basically as back to back 600s with a sleep stop in Llanidloes. Aiming to start approx. 7am and take 15 hours for day 1, kip for 7-8 hours and then probably go full value for day 2...

Any takers?

Sunday 15th July.

In keeping with the calendar event as much as possible, I'm going to travel down Saturday night and start at 0001ish Sunday morning with a view to gettingthe last train home.

I'll be on 63" fixed and won't be in too much of a hurry, full value if needs be, savouring(!) the night riding, and plan for a slap up BP feast before the train.

Silly question (that I should have asked before going out for the ride), but does a DIY 200 count towards your points and for a Brevet 1000 award?

My first DIY ever does now show up in the table on my results page, but is not included in the total points and "rides listed"; it does show "16 (1 are perms)" but it is still "3x200" as it was last week.

Yes, your 200 will count but it may just be a bit of a system bug or lag, my final ride of the season, the Border Castles 200 is on the results list but the 2 points have not been added to the total.  There is usually a lag between the ride being logged and I think the points go on after midnight but it's been like this for a couple of days, I might raise it on the AUK forum if it doesn't correct itself.

Hi, I am thinking about heading to Cornwall over the xmas break and have 5 rides/routes which initially I hope to do as leisurely rides - but then I thought if there is Audax points to be had why not claim them!
Then I got thinking about AAA points, but not having factored that into a DIY by GPS before I wonder if any of this basic information below would even satisfy AAA-criteria? And thirdly do I have do anything special to claim the AAA points or do I just submit the entry form and gpx/route as normal?

Day 1 - 94km - 1574m total ascent
Day 2 - 143km - 1302m total ascent
Day 3 - 131km - 1374m total ascent
Day 4 - 141km - 1202m total ascent
Day 5 - is a perm

Total ascent values are through BikeHide recalculation of data.

No need to do anything special - just your DIY-by-GPS entry as usual.

Your track will get AAA assessment if there seems a chance of AAAs.

"Day 1" looks more likely than the others to reach the 15m/km AAA threshold http://www.aukweb.net/results/aaa/aaavnts/aaaqual/

AAA-ness is difficult to predict http://www.aukweb.net/results/aaa/aaaclmb/

Enjoy wonderful Cornish Climbing!

Question on the return of cards with Perms...

I recently purchased via online entry a Brevet Card for a perm. After completing the event is it standard practice to send a SAE to the organiser to return the validated card or is this included in the charge?

I realise that some perms are the same price for either online or postal entry, however for postal entry you're required to send two SAE. The instructions for online entry don't elude to this.

It varies by perm organiser.  Most will ask you to include an SAE if you want your validated brevet card back.

Le Tour de neuf Cheval Blancs next Friday (29th).

This caught my eye as initially I thought it must be in France, but it turns out to be a tour of 9 white horses in the chalk hills of Wessex.  Lots of familiar roads but joined up in different ways.  Will ride from home to start in Alresford about 6am and see how it goes.  Hopefully will be a nice 300 for my how-to-fit-in-an-SR-series-when-you-are-not-doing-PBP year.

Having abandoned the 2019 London Wales London 400km for reasons beyond my control  :'(, I'm planning to do this ride again as DIY Audax in July, preferably on a Saturday following the original route mostly, but avoiding some hills. The pace will be moderate, 20kmph moving average (not a fast rider, sorry  ;D).

Start: Chalfont St Peter
Distance: 407km
Preferred Day: Saturday
Date: 20 or 27 July (flexible)
Start time: Flexible

Please let me know if you're interested.

Can someone kindly link me to where it is explained how to make a DIY into a BR/BRM qualifying ride in order to count towards RRTY?  The FAQ for DIYs (https://www.audax.uk/about-audax/event-types/do-it-yourself-diy-events/diy-faqs/) on the new website just points me here (https://www.audax.uk/awards-pages/randonneur-round-the-year/).  Feels very circular!

By default, DIYs of 200km and over are validated as BRs and so count towards RRTY and other AUK awards. No special action is required to stake a claim for DIYs; they are counted in exactly the same way Calendar events do, there is no distinction.

Perms - listed events and DIYs - are not registered with ACP and do not count as BRMs or otherwise contribute towards ACP awards, qualifying for PBP, whatever.

All the best, Paul Stewart, DIY Org, South East Region

Beaten to it by the excellent Manotea; but here's my version of the same:

Any DIY of 200km or more is normally* a BR. (Minimum average speed 14.3km/hour for DIY 200s to 600s; speeds for longer distances in section 9 of the regs, which can be found by clicking "Directory", bottom right of this page:  https://www.audax.uk/about-us/  )

*There's such a thing as a BP 200, with a lower minimum speed, but it's unusual.

(There isn't such a thing as a BRM DIY.)

Updating Tony's post:
Chairman Audax UK's statement (17 June) is here:
https://www.audax.uk/news/covid-19-update-17-june-2020/
An extract relevant to DIYs is:
"following an AUK Board meeting earlier this week, we plan to recommence validating Permanent and DIY AUK rides of up to 200km from August 1st.
"It may be that a particular region or part of the UK is still (or becomes) subject to local restrictions that would prevent either re-commencement on the 1st of August or the continuation of events at some later point. In that instance, our intention would be to, in effect, "quarantine" that region, while still allowing events elsewhere. Permanents ridden on foreign soil (PROFs) should only take place where they are explicitly permitted in the areas in which they take place.
"[Permanents/DIYs] will be open for entry on the audax.uk web site and/or by post from August 1st"
I think people are assuming that the plan announced 18 days ago will turn into a formal decision and action announced on or before 1 August. There is a Board meeting later this week aiui where confirmation of this plan (including how riders can enter a DIY at least the day before, before starting a ride at 0800 (say) on 1 August), the resumption of calendar events and extending the distance limit beyond 200km for Permanents/DIYs will no doubt all be on the agenda.

Yes.
My understanding is:

- Starting date is the date the ride is counted in. So yes, it counts for 19/20 season.

- Perms have a lower minimum speed of 14.3, so for 615k you get 43 hours, and yes SR is BR, not BRM.

I'm thinking about riding Cycling UK's Cantii way route in Kent as a DIY perm. Starting in Ashford, likely date is 24th of June, the route is 240km, plan is to submit the first 200km as a DIY, riding clockwise from Ashford.

https://www.cyclinguk.org/cantii-way

I understand the route is not as hardcore as parts of the King Alfred's Way.
