Thought I'd check my BP as I've not done it for a while.

125/80. That's tolerable. I see the new 'ideal' is 115/75, so mildly elevated, but not a worry.

I think the "ideal" varies with the drug producers' balance sheets.

Woke up on Dec 28th with severe back pain, in between the shoulderblades. Never experienced it before and cannot think of a reason ( meaning cannot recall twisting or lifting or any sort of twinge). Cannot lay flat on the bed but it gets better as the day goes on. Had a sports massage and got marinally better but had to sleep on the floor for a couple of days, now graduated to sleeping on a futon. Question is, do I bother going to the doc or do I not bother until it happens again (hopefully it does not)?

Thanks Helly.  Stress test this afternoon.  I'm just beginning to panic.

BTW, the progression of this inconvenience has been interesting:

August, PBP, felt grand all the way (apart from the sleepy side).
November: Heart hurting at top of climbs
December 9th: Angina during climbs until after 50 km
December 30th: Angina on most of ride

In 2007 I did PBP followed by Mt. Ventoux a month later. In Nov. 2007 a stress ECG showed ST depression over 150 bpm. In December two coffees would give me slight angina and they stented me in March.

Maybe it's PBP's that's doing it.

There is actually very little the doc can do.
If you can get a swiss ball then sitting on that will help.

A basketball or football can be used for upper back. Stand back to a wall, about 1.5times ball diameter away. Place ball behind you, a little below where the pain is (say, a little less than the ball diameter). Lean on the ball. Carefully bend your knees, leaning on the ball, until the ball roll up past the painful bit. Straighten knees and repeat for a while.

...

Aye well, the stress ECG was OK but I developed the "angina" during it so the cardiologist wants an angiography & a coronography.  He did agree with my suggestion that it was probably due to acid reflux (test after lunch followed by clementines and 2 espressos, same as last week's ride) but when I said "so I can get back into training then" he made a face like a prune and said no.

I'm going to see what my GP says to that (in this neck of the woods you don't get fobbed off with a nursie-know-it-all, you get the genuine article for 15 whole minutes) and follow his advice.  All the same a coronography means a few days off while the artery reseals and a general air of doubt until I've had it so my Easter flèche is off.

Bugger.

Still, better that than a bypass.

I wouldn't do that in the acute phase, wait till it's calmed down a bit.  Football/basketball may be a bit big, something nearer tennis ball size and hardness tends to allow more local pressure and deeper pressure.

Also if you can find one, a physio/sports injury specialist who might be able to see if there is any underlying imbalance causing this.  Lower back pain as an example is often a symptom of something like tight calves, hamstrings, or over developed quads etc.

I've been talking to someone at work - they've had two Transient Global Amnesia attacks in recent times.

The really weird thing is they were able to carry on coding whilst in the middle of an attack. The code was ok, too.

Wow.

Some Nurse Practitioners are excellent.
Others have opinions beyond their knowledge and education.
But the same is true for doctors.

Well, BHIT was founded by a nurse who doesn't cycle (or acknowledge any anti-helmet research)...

Oddly enough i'm a Nurse practitioner and I've had a few similar arguments with Dr's, an almost religious faiith in polystyrene hats is very common.

My sister is a nurse. She doesn't much care about me going out on my bike without a helmet, or racing time trials for that matter.

If I'm killed, she inherits half my house.

wait til you get into a "discussion" with a (specialist) nurse practitioner in diabetes who insists that your plate needs to include decent amounts of starchy carbohydrates.

Their faces do some interesting things when you tell them "I've adopted a low carbohydrate, high fat diet and I feel great and my blood sugars are better than ever"

Some people have minds like trains and must not/cannot be derailed.

I am neither a diabetic nor a diabetologist but believe both glycaemic load and glycaemic index need addressing.

Partner's diabetic father reports that for him unpeeled potatoes are benign but rice is as wicked as sugar. And there is a lot of OCD in that family...

Rice, and most breads are sugar spiking little ba$tards. Potatoes though, curiously not.

And cake, OK if accompanied by cycling.

Interestingly, that's not my experience. Maybe depends on the manner of the cooking; mashed potato really spikes my blood sugar (and I'm not diabetic).

Partner's father has jacket potatoes and boiled white rice I believe.

I did include the words 'for him'...

It is all entirely down to personal experience, matching rate of rise to insulin dose and timing is the tricky bit

I am stuck in hospital again😢 . I went into retention around 5.30 and as I arose from the throne my lower back went  into spasm . I managed to drag myself through the house and knock the patio doors open and woke the neighbour who called the ambulance.. So I am stuck in hospital with a cathier and rattling with pain medicine for my back  ::-). I will be here at least overnight . bother !.
