I still feel like poo.  My throat still hurts and for the first two hours after taking paracetamol or ibuprofen I can function reasonably normally.  But once they start wearing off I feel like I'm going to die and just want to sleep.  My whole body hurts and I'm so tired.

last time I had proper flu vs a cold was almost exactly three years ago, working away from home in Aberdeen, came on about Wednesday and I worked through til Friday feeling like crap, came home lay on the sofa for two days.  Only problem was my immune system decided to go rogue and f*@k up my pancreas giving me the lovely gift of Type 1 diabetes aged 39.  :demon:

Interesting. Some gastroenteritis viruses carry surface proteins very similar to those on the surface of beta cells, and antibodies against the former can take out the latter as well, leaving you diabetic.  Happened to the 4-year-old son of a friend of mine - explaining to the poor wee chap why his parents had to start sticking needles into him was harrowing.

Any chance of a beta-cell implant?

Anyway, I came in here to crow because my GP has cancelled the cardiologist's aspirin prescription.  The cardio knew in advance that the stuff buggers up my oesophagus but insisted, so since my stent went in I've been eating razors.  Doc said he was bonkers.

It's always a possibility, but I'd be low priority for it as I don't struggle with control.  I have no idea though whether those rogue T-cells are still around and would just attack the new beta cells.

There are some well  identified trauma triggers for T1, including both disease and physical trauma, but no way of identifying who might have that underlying genetic susceptibility.  In some ways I'm lucky that it took so long to manifest itself, as my consultant at the last appointment said that later diagnosis tends to give an easier ride of it and end up with fewer complications.

A friend of mine got glandular fever and "pushed through it" to work, ended up in ICU nearly dead and came out with type I diabetes and since then has developed all manner of nasty things like epilepsy and myasthenis gravis... Not good news. :/

Achievement unlocked:  Improved BMI by being 3cm taller than at last year's annual being-told-off-by-the-asthma-nurse appointment.   :o

No, I haven't a clue how that happened.  Either I've been wrong about my height for years, or I've grown since I was last measured by a competent healthcare professional.  We checked, and left leg vs right leg weight bearing only accounts for a little under 1cm difference, so it can't just be that.

I'm wondering if someone made a mountain bike tyre size cockup and converted 5'6" instead of 5.6'.  But who the fuck measures anything in decimal feet?  More likely someone applied an overenthusiastic fudge factor for shoes.

Ah, you're not alone.

At my heart health check-up a year or two ago, they claimed I was 184cm.

That's 2cm more than I've always thought. They then went on about how it was good I'd put some weight on.

Given that I've had my height checked using a stadiometer in the past and been 182cm, I'm inclined to believe that height was always correct.

I have come to the conclusion that the bollock pain referred to above is actually referred pain: I had some pain in the back of my legs and left knee, which felt very like sciatica, whilst I was lying in bed in the early hours. I managed to get to sleep again and the pain had mostly gone.

This seems (anecdotally) common. A friend of mine had non-specific fever, nothing major, and his girlfriend came home to find him unconscious on the kitchen floor. Turned out that little unidentified virus left him the gift of type 1 diabetes.

Oh, a question. one cast off testerday, another on. In between I tried straightening my wrist. Got part way and no further. Not stopped by pain, just solid unable to move any further (like bending elbow or knee past straight).

Is this normal, a result of being in the cast for 2 weeks or have I buggered my wrist joint?

3rd possibility: they have.

I'd talk to the orthopaedist if I were you, sooner rather than later.

MrC seek advice, it never does any harm and if you're ok no harm done whereas if there's an issue they need to know ASAP.  Hands are precious :)

As for my health and fitness, this lurgy can "do one". Feel as if I've been cycling through lurg for over 6 weeks and now I'm sinking into antibiotic lurgy territory... Eating #AllTheDrugs but still feel like crap.

I guess that isn't normal then

consulting dr google, I'm bloody lucky to have avoided an external fixator. Just the look of those things makes me cringe

Why won't this sodding flu just sod off? Sneezing and snotting again this evening. Finished the antibiotics at lunchtime. It's half term now! I want to go cycling!

Can you be allergic to a swimming pool?

I ask as I seem to be having a very bad reaction after my coaching session at one pool, while I am fine after practicing my drills at the other. The reaction I am getting is a very blocked nose alternating with periods where it won’t stop running. This has happened over the last three weeks and takes a day or two to clear up. It is so bad that I can’t sleep, hence the reason I am up writing this at just after 4am!

I wondered if it was anything to do with the time of my coaching session: 8 to 9pm, so I tried a swim at the same time of night at the other pool with no reaction.

Thus, I wonder if I am allergic to the pool?

Maybe from algae present in one but not the other, or something in the circulation system.  Or a higher pee concentration - I believe the "chlorine" smell comes not from the chlorine itself but its reaction with pee.

Since you're on a late session, it could be that you're picking up something undesirable left by earlier swimmers.

Still got lurgy, Kim still has lurgy. Very Boring Indeed. Been swallowing knives since Thursday and epic snot.

No point in seeing GP as I'm still fairly convinced it's viral-crud and antibiotics probably won't do anything. I just hope I don't end up with a secondary infection in spite of all the drugs and tricks I'm trying to prevent it with.

We have a high-proprtion of lurgy-sufferers in the office; seems to be a persistent strain this year.

Arm is improving; as long as I make no attempt to use fingers. Doing so produces major persistent (for hours) ache down fingers and hand.
Either I am an utter wimp (possible) or this is being unusually painful.

Same here re lurgy sufferers -- boss is being lovely at me doing not full days and doing what I can.  I feel fucking awful tho. SO bored of this. Wish it was bacterial as a good dose of something antibioticky would be MAGIC!  Viruses are POO.  Why can't we nuke them properly too?!

Regarding your hand, you're not usually a wimp so I would assume it is still painful cos you b0rked it good and proper and your body is trying to heal itself which takes TIME! (Patience being a hard trait to have in recovery). Hands are complex as fuck, hospitals are thinking of creating a combined orthopaedics + plastics hand specialism. The difference between a HAND specialist and general orthopod is amazingly different!  My friend who had a plated break (after a week of immobilisation) but simpler sounding than yours was off work 8 weeks cos he was just WIPED as well as being in pain. He kept trying to fill/empty this dishwasher cos he lived in a madhouse and no one else would do it, he had to be stomped on by his clinicians to STOP and actually rest properly!

I have pretty badass pain thresholds (altho not as much as in childhood) and my simpler carpal tunnel + tenosynovectomy surgery in 2009 had a recovery from 23rd Dec well into Feb... I deferred my return to work by a further 10 days on Occ Health doctor advice until I was virtually pain free.  I was recommended 6-8 weeks, I had nearer 10. There were some things I could do straight away, typing being one of them (for short periods) and other things I could not do at all for weeks.

TL:DR - you're not a wuss, healing injuries hurt!

Chez the cardiologist this morning for a post-stent stress test.  Quads like strands of spaghetti, not much puff after ~6 weeks off but everything was OK.  BP at 150 bpm was a bit high (242/71 with 250 being gasket-blowing limit) but probably also due to inactivity so he imposed no new drugs, just told me to keep below 150 bpm which is the limit I observe anyway.  So I can ride again.

Oh, he did say to stop doing "extreme" events.  Audax isn't extreme, is it?
