The brackets have been installed and I will go get the boxes soon. Rather than flowers, I'd like to try my hand at growing food, and something a bit more useful than just herbs. What is likely to do well in smallish window boxes? Anything other than lettuce?

We (by which I mean my better half) are in our second season of balcony gardening, and have the following stuff growing:

- strawberries
- tomatoes
- lettuce (little ones, around the tomato plants)
- rocket
- a selection of herbs
- blueberries (these are a long term project, and only gave a handful this year - but delicious!)

I guess anything where freshness is key is worth trying?

We've gotten plants from eBay, which has been a success, and seeds from Thompsons (though I guess it's too late in the season for seeds now).

If you want to grow tomatoes, can I suggest you try Microtom?  I was given one by my dad, it has grown only about 6" high but has full size toms on it.

This article mentions late sown veggies and it also mentions growing them in window boxes:

Next time I'm over there in my pyjamas complaining about the noise, I will.

Maybe they only make a noise to get you to go over in your pyjamas to complain?  ;)

Today I got a lavender and a tiny fuchsia for the bedroom window box. And I got leek and carrot seeds for baby leeks and baby carrots for the other boxes. The leek seeds are planted, but I need to go and get more compost before I do the carrots; it's hard work carrying compost home with no car. With any luck I'll be serving home grown leek and carrot soup in October.

I was going to get some marigolds to put in with the carrot seeds, but they had no plants and seeds wouldn't grow in time, so I'm just hoping the carrot flies won't be interested in windox boxes 2 storeys up and half a mile from the nearest garden.
