Either way, if it's a choice between no rugby or paying Murdoch, I'll choose no rugby.

...and if the WRU decide to go with BT Sport [for example]?

Do you have to pay a premium to watch?

Yes, but not to Murdoch!
I'm gonna limp to the pub and drink 'til the rest of me is as numb as my arse.

Well, in that case almost certainly not. We have a television package that comes with our (rather fast non-BT) internet connection, but I can't remember the last time I turned the television on and I have no idea what the package includes. It could have been as long ago as last year that I last watched a proper telly. Unless the games are broadcast live on the internet then I doubt if I shall watch them.

But at this hypothetical stage would you be wanting the Welsh rugby team to lose because they will have displayed

a very clear and tangible reason

that you would want them to do so, because they are

Greedy bastards.

or do you just not want to pay to watch professional sport?

The WRU have a deal with BBC Cymru until 2018, so it's academic, for the time being at least.

Whatever agreement the Welsh RU have reached has not stopped their supporters watching it on television. That's a pretty crucial difference.

And it's not "paying to watch professional sport": professional sport has been around for many years and was paid for as part of the licence fee. This is a national institution being hi-jacked by big business and them demanding a ransom for supporters to get it back again.

The licence fee pays for BBC. There are not enough hours of broadcasting a week on the BBC to show all sport.

So a large amount of sport is paid for, either by subscription or by advertising. Does an anti-Murdoch viewer switch off commercial channels when Murdoch entities have funded programmes?

Hmmm. Let's see what unmissable stuff was squeezed into today's schedule:

Wow, you were perfectly happy to support the Lions back in July who were only on Sky (not even on the radio). You didn't seem to want those 'greedy bastards' to lose ;)

matt, how many hours a week are there on the BBC 'normal' channels, and when do people watch live sport?

Dunno.

My turn; can you post without rhetorical questions?!? I might actually understand what point you are trying to make! :)

Presumably Aunty has to cater for all viewers and not just a chosen few?   We may not like the crap broadcast* but I think that we're probably in the minority.  :(

*  I voted with my wallet in 2000 choosing to no longer have a television set or to watch any live broadcast guff.   I prefer radio anyway but that's probably related to my lack of vision.

If we go back to the days when rugby was only shown on BBC [either 1 or 2], there was almost as much rugby being played but matches were only shown live during the [then] 5 Nations.

A 5 Nations weekend would usually show one of the two matches available, depending on where in the UK that you lived but on occasions you would get one match on BBC1 and one on BBC2, often at the same time.  No highlights programmes.

On an average week, there was between 1/2 hour and an hour of Rugby Special on BBC2, variously aired at 7.30pm or 11.30pm on Saturday or 12.30pm or 5.30pm on Sunday.

I also used to enjoy the BBC2 Rugby League "Floodlight Special" on a Tuesday night.

Frankly, BBC weren't competing and just assumed it was their right to broadcast rugby.  They even lost out to ITV for the World Cups.

It all changed [in England!] when Sky started showing some Premiership games and Super Ten games

Nowadays, thanks to Sky and others, I can watch all the Autumn internationals, 6 Nations, Rugby Championship, most Heineken Cup, most Amlin, usually three Premiership matches per week, end of season play-offs, Anglo-Welsh Cup, Super 15, Top 14, Currie Cup, NPC Provincial Championship,  and so on!!!!

Far from preventing rugby supporters from watching rugby

Quite.

I'd still like to know just how far the boycott of services tied up with nasty companies goes.

Just settling down for the day :-

Now - England vs Argentina on Sky Sports 2
5pm - Wales vs SA on BBC2
7.30pm - France vs New Zealand on Sky Sports 2
Some time later tonight - England vs Fiji rugby league on the Sky Plus planner

Somehow I've got to squeeze in Dad's Army as well.

The individual patches of replaced turf won't last if there's a scrum on top of them.

Good first half for England saw them through. If they play like the second half against NZ they will be stuffed.

Good result for the Springboks.

Yep, England need to play for 80 minutes [+!] but they have proved that they can play decent winning rugby.

Wales played very well in places but do they have the strength in depth?  Especially if this is true

And in victory, the All Blacks looked fallible!

Cheap programmes, compared to top-rank professional sport.

In pre-digital days, the BBC couldn't cover all the top-rank sport because there wasn't enough air time. Now, it can't afford to cover it all.

I'm a bit confused by this debate.

As I understand it, Wales could have played NZ if they'd stumped up the asking price of £1.5m.   The Welsh Union chose not to pay, other Unions, not just England, chose to pay.   Are Wales playing South Africa, Argentina, Tongan and the Quantas Wallabies on a 'not for profit' basis'?   I'm pretty certain that there is a profit motive.

Looks like the RFU's decision to stump up to play NZ was a good call

Perhaps Wales should have found the extra £750k to get the All Blacks
