Medieval Fight Club
« on: 22 April, 2011, 06:49:21 pm »
So yesterday evening after work, Wascally Weasel and I yomped up to the summit of a local hill; me with all my camera gear, him with a rucksack full of swords and axes, dragging a cart full of armour.  We were met shortly after by his mate Andy (he's the guy in the chain mail and the red tabard) and a Julian, who'd brought him from the station and guided him to where we were.  Goddess alone knows what the locals thought of him rocking up on the tube in full medieval kit.

We had a few strange looks and one or two locals taking snaps on their mobiles as we shot these pictures. I reckon we're lucky not to have got arrested, packing this quantity of pointy in a public place.

Still - our Wascally Weasel looks damned good, I thought...

Now that's heavy metal.

Beautifully lit, too.  Nice work!
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

Definitely a hint of John Boorman's 'Excalibur' about the whole shebang.

And he rode dressed like that on the Tube? Oi vey!
VELOMANCER

Well that's the more blunt way of putting it but as usual he's dead right.

Damn, Charlotte made us look good.

I think that Sir Iain and Sir Andrew 4 is our Butch and Sundance moment...

Yes to what torslanda said about Excalbur too - especially the light in the final scene.

Great stuff, very happy with the results.

We have talked on here about the possiblity of tandem jousting before.  Just need two pantomime horse heads

I've always wanted to see a pantomine horse on a tandem.  The cranks would have to be set out of synch though, for a proper galloping motion.

Cool pix!

I reckon there's a good chance the fuzz would adjust their attitude to take account of the rest of the gear. A bloke I used to know was once accosted by two Thames Valley policemen while wandering around Aylesbury wearing full 1640s rig, including sword. Drawing himself up straight & saying "Sir! I am a gentleman, and my sword is an article of dress!" may not have been the best move, & they got him to tie the sword into the scabbard to stop it being drawn (at least, in a hurry), but according to witnesses, that may have been due more to their concern about the low blood level in his circulating beer than anything else.

Sir Iain in contemplation 2 by lyope, on Flickr

This is becoming one of my favourites of the set. Mainly I think because it has all of the concepts I would want in such a photo - yeah, sure, the basic ultimate coolness of a well shot photo is there but that particular one had what I really wanted - the essence of someone involved in an unimaginable struggle who does not know if they can win or of they personally have consequence at all. The issue is still in doubt.

Cool. Sub-Zero, or at least Charlotte's camera work is - if you had seen how poor the light really was and what she did with it - wow!

Methinks Sir Wascally Weasel was born in the wrong century.

Was it Sir WW or was it on ARRSE that I read the tale of a gallant knight, in full medieval re-enactment garb, being mugged on the Tube? Chav chappie pulls out knife and threatens to stab gallant knight, who retorts "On you go then - this is real chain mail".

So, we need two tandems, four riders and two long poles with boxing gloves on the end with the words Biff and Pow written on them and we're sorted.

I am currently attempting to persuade my manager's manager's manager to take my place on the back of the tandem. Well, he's about my height, uses SPD pedals, and knows Tim. As I see it, it's a win-win option! ;)
