Unlike other forums, there doesn't appear to be a section for this.,  its Saturday, its raining heavy, and I'm bored.   ::-)

I like this game...  :D

Carried on up the coast after the Dun Run last year (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=108948.msg2411219#msg2411219).  Didn't get very far, on account of tendonitis, but I did confirm that the only things that have changed in Great Yarmouth since my gran lived there in the 80s were the addition of some magic paint cycle lanes, the roller-skating rink has become a "retro" roller-skating rink, and the chips are now served in polystyrene boxes, rather than newspaper.

This is my Lightning p-38 my recumbent of choice now. I also own a Nazca Fuego which is currently in storage. Thought I’d sold it last year but after some time wasters it went into storage for winter then Covid-19 arrived.

Six 200km audaxes on it this year before lockdown hit. It’s currently seeing one or  two 100km rides a week plus a few shorter ones.

I bought a frame kit last year, then built it up. Drive train is off my old mtn bike , retired due to frame reaching end of life.  Wheels I built myself.  It has since had a front mudguard and long flaps fitted after the experience of muddy water being thrown in my face over winter.

My first recumbent, the classic Kingcycle from about 1995.  Updated with more easily available wheel sizes (349mm front; 507mm rear):

Then an Aerobikes Tour.  (Aerobikes was a small Edinburgh firm, they made about 35 of these in the 1990's):

My rarest bike, an Aerobikes Sprint - their racing model, they only made four of these.  I've added a DIY tailbox and bought a fibreglass nosecone:

Then I designed a Moulton F-frame conversion.  Brazing done by Dylan at Yourspokes in York, powder coated then assembled by me:

This was an irresistable bargain found on fleabay, although it needed a bit of work to get into rideable condition:

And my only new recumbent, a Velomotion frameset built up with a variety of new and already available parts:

What I did was go to the webpage, right click on the image, select "copy image address" and paste that into here, wrapped in [img][/img] tags (which you seem to have managed).

If the URL ends in 'html' it's a page, and won't work.  If it ends in 'jpg', it should be good.

Ancient history: Cyclefest 2004, Arellcat and I making the turn into the entrance of the canalside cafe at Galgate near Lancaster, both on Windcheetahs, with Torslanda still on the A6 on his homebuild.

I still use the pirate flag, but those Shimano shoes had to finally go in the bin about 12 months ago.  I think I got my money's worth!

It's mad that Cyclefest – well, the only one I managed to go to as well – was sixteen years ago now.  I still think about it from time to time.  There was something about it that was just very lovely and fun: perhaps it was the location as much as anything.  It was the same kind of slightly nerdy, gently unhinged, yet friendly, hamburgers-and-fish-and-chips vibe that fed into Velovision magazine.

Redshift, goodness me that's a vintage photograph.  Were my thighs really that big?  I thought I was a stick back then!

I went to several over the years, and on non-CF years we used to take pictures at the race track when the BHPC were there, but CF years were the best, and it's a real shame that the the organisers had to stop doing it.

Arellcat, compared with some of the shots of me that we've got, you were a stick!

Mrs B and I have owned a few bents of the last decade or so, in no particular order.

My Challenge Seiran, bought off fleebay in 2014 and ridden rather a lot until about a year ago when it donated its wheels to my Surly LHT.

Mrs B's ICE Sprint, sold in 2013 when we moved house and just couldn't store all our bikes.

The Trice tandem, great fun but sold on after a re-spray by Ben Cooper of Kinetics in Glasgow as it was just too dam wide and impractical.

Mrs B's Trice Explorer. Much lighter than more modern trikes I think, certainly felt lighter on the road. Sold on as Mrs B wasn't using it much and didn't like the idea of it just sitting there not being ridden.

A test ride today on my N+1 Christmas present to myself.  I bought a Pelso Brevet frameset through Laidback Cycles in Edinburgh, and built it up using (as far as possible) parts that I already had in the bike shed.  I've set it up differently to the standard high racer configuration, with a 20" front wheel and 26" rear.  And open cockpit bars rather than the J-bars supplied with the frameset.

Carbon frame, forks and seat.  My first carbon frame, previous bikes have mostly been steel and often vintage.  Disc brakes as well.  To compensate for this unaccustomed burst of modernity, toeclips and straps; friction shifters; an old square taper chainset; and a Carradice rack bag tucked in behind the seat.  Pictures here:

Not while riding - I put the extra one on the handlebar stem so that I could use that, then swap over bottles when required.

I haven't weighed it but even with my bag full of toolkit, inner tubes, snack, flask it is light.  My estimate would be around 25 lbs.  There's a good review of the standard Pelso setup by Dave McCraw, here's the link:

Point of order, that's David Mason who road tested the Pelso, not Dave McCraw (who had a long term test of the Schlitter Encore).  David rides an M5 CHR personally and was recently seen casually dropping the odd hint in my direction about velomobiles.

Taken when new (which was just a few months ago), it's a Schlitter Freestyle with a Thor carbon seat and mix of 11-speed Shimano XT, 105 and Ultegra components. Wheels are Scribe carbon 50mm. Crankset is a 160mm 105 R7000 50/34 - was quite difficult to find in this small size (on my DF bikes I use a 170mm crank length BTW).

Since the photo was taken I've changed the pedals to double side XT SPDs, as found them easier to use than the SPD-SLs on this bike, despite generally preferring SPD-SLs.

😍 very nice. How have you found the transition to the dark side?

Mostly easier than I thought it would be, though busy T-junctions are a bit stressful (especially as there is a risk of heel strike when turning tightly at slow speed) and I still suck at hill climbing once it gets a bit steep. It goes like a rocket on the flat/downhill and even up gentle inclines. I got a Garmin Varia radar, which helps with me confidence and reminds me to check the mirrors.

Getting there, averaged 17.7 mph on a 30 mile ride yesterday, I'm still pretty slow on proper hills, though, and probably slow down too much when cornering

The first time I experienced heel strike while attempting to turn right onto a busy road I nearly soiled myself! You do unconsciously account for it after a while though. Learning to pedal with one foot when you’re starting off helps too, I’ve found. After about 10 months of riding ‘bents, the only manoeuvre I’m still not confident with is turning right from a T junction which is on an uphill slope.

Is your Freestyle a custom colour? It looks much classier than the single colour options shown on Schlitter’s website.

For context how does that compare to your road bike speed on same route / conditions and effort levels?

The matt black/polished alloy finish was the only frame choice available without a long wait when I originally ordered it, but I'm very happy with it. Unfortunately there has been a frame recall (a few heavier riders had noticed cracks at a stress point) and there is now a frame replacement programme, but they cannot now offer the same frame finish as my current one. I've asked for orange and white instead (as a paid custom option - the replacement frame itself it free, though), as prefer a two-tone look.

I've not tried the exact same route recently, but the average would probably not be far off - on my road bike (when fit) I would not be as fast on the flat or down hills on good roads, but would be faster climbing hills and descending on poor or twisty roads and starting off again after stopping for traffic / junctions

I find I’m comparable over 10m per km terrain between my recumbent and road bike at similar effort levels. Effort being assessed from the HR data.  I don’t ride my road bike long distance anymore.  Once you get used to the comfort it’s hard to go back to upright.

Yeah, my back definitely gets much less sore on longer rides on the recumbent than my road bike, though I do miss the reduced sense of "connection" with the bike, as if it's almost an extension of your body, that you get from a well-fitted road bike, so still may use the latter for some shorter rides.

Sadly I haven't been out on it since 2019. Sadly the locals are rather talkative so with covid around I know I wouldn't be able to keep social distance. And riding a bent is a people magnet as you know.

HA! That implies that I gotta be fit, cause the local cyclist around here can go up hill at speed. But I go out to enjoy the rides and views etc so that means I will now and again stop, not only to find the right full place for my lungs but also enjoy the views.

Updated photo of the Catrike.
"New" single sided pedals from yacf, front mudguards and sidepods from ctc forum, rack from Amazon (boo) and I had the panniers 12 years ago.  The Catrike frame bags stop the sidepods from fouling the chain and are all the storage I need for a day ride.

My current stable is my Lightning P-38 (albeit still wearing a bodged ex-Raleigh Twenty Dawes Kingpin fork, after I broke the original in mid-2019)

My Lightning is freed from its earlier embarassment and after Many Engineering Discussions now has a new fork:

What i the term for 1/3 or 1/2 of a fork?

Mike Burrows always called it a monoblade, so that's what I call it.  The only other names I've seen used are 'single-sided fork' or a cantilevered hub.

Cannondale refer to theirs as a Leftie.
