looking for advice for a good value digital camera

I'm considering buying a digital camera, something compact, I'm not looking for a dslr.

Most important features for me are a fast response time for sports shots, and a good zoom lens. As for budget, I would like to spend less than 200 euro, but could stretch to 300 if there is a good enough reason to do so.

So any ideas, I haven't a clue at the moment.

Sony have one of the fastest response times for a compact, heading towards dSLR territory.
Worth a look.

Ask iddu what he uses. Any camera with a response time fast enough to be used from the back of a fixie whilst hooning it downhill must be OK.

I've never seen anything as slow (or silly) as my mother's Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX3. Avoid. I think Mum's going back to film...
Compact digital cameras can be sped up by avoiding things such as red eye reduction and auto-focus.
My Canon Ixus 70 seems OK.

I have a Panasonic Lumix FZ5, which had 'class leading' low shutter lag (according to dprev) at the time, and a 36-432mm IS Leica zoom.  It's great for action; especially with children.  You could check out the FZ18 (upgrade).  It's small, but not slimline.

I bought the Panasonic Lumix FZ18 recently, superb Leica lens, 35mm equivalent of 28-504mm. A test I read on the web found no flaring on the telephoto shots. I like being able to opt to look through the eye viewfinder instead of the LCD screen, even though the eye one is also an LCD display.

I really like the look of the sony, and with 10x zoom and faster lag times I might give it a go

I know they haven't got a fashionable name but the Kodak Easyshare comes out pretty well in the reviews, I have found mine small enough to carry around in a pocket and it takes lenses.
