How much to charge?
« on: 20 September, 2008, 02:03:38 pm »
I've been contacted by someone wanting to use one of my photographs in an advertising campaign. The photograph will be used in a brochure/catalog and point of sale posters and probably only in France.

Does anyone have any idea how I should go about charging for this?

I'd like to earn a few quid but don't want to price myself out of it.

google for the appropriate rates. Big posters? Point of sale? How many copies?

My estimate would be between 300-1000 Euro would not get you laughed at.

That's the sort of figure I was thinking about and then I saw that a fairly generic Tour de France photo (blurred peleton) from Getty would cost over £10k for the same usage, for one year - and that's not even with exclusivity.

However, my original photo is only 6MP (D40) and it will most likely be cropped so maybe it might not even be that useful for poster use.

JT when I was asked for  a photo to be used my photographer friend sent me these links below all though I had already let them use it, judging from the links I could have charged about £50.

£50 per photo is generally the going rate in the travel press. But they are notoriously stingy.

Right well I've sent a proposal to the interested party re. licensing my photo. It's considerably more than £50 which would be taking the piss, frankly.

I'll let you know how I get on.
