Cable clips to prevent head tube rub?
« on: 13 September, 2020, 12:18:04 pm »
HK’s Roberts has Ergopower and the cables rub on the head tube on their way to the down tube cable stops. Helicopter tape doesn’t really work to stop the newly applied paint from being abraded because it is a lugged frame and following the abrupt contours is difficult.

Don’t bother suggesting swap the cable run to the opposite sides and cross them back under the down tube. The bare cables would rub the underside of the down tube.

I have seen plastic cable clips (usually on cheaper Giant bikes) that hold the gear cables apart in front of the head tube, which would be perfect for this bike but my Google-fu is lacking. The nearest I have been able to find is

but the cables are too close together. I need to hold the gear cables about 30mm or so apart. Any ideas of how to find what I am looking for?

Can you use a cable tie fed through a suitable piece of tubing?  A bit like this

I have some silicon (I think) spiral things that wrap around the cable outer to prevent rubbing the paintwork, maybe that would help? They are very unobtrusive being black on black outer cable. Cannot remember where I got them from, , but no doubt from a yacf tip!

I got some of those as part of a jagwire replacement cable set.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/380618580254 is silicone wrap, see also similar items.
Further investigation shows that they are referred to as rotating hooks and searching eBay for jagwire rotating hooks brings up plenty eg: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/173896416840

The Jagwire rotating hooks are about 10mm C-C and what I linked to. I need something closer to 30mm C-C.

The ziptie and plastic tube will work fine but I was hoping for something prettier.

The silicon bumper things (e.g. Jagwire tube tops) slow down paint loss but this bike does enough miles in dodgy weather for dirt to accumulate in the contact points. http://www.seek.co.jp/Protectors-6-pcs-Jagwire-3G-Tube-68942/

Being a Moulton man you probably remember the cable holders that were on the old f-frame models - two flat bits of plastic with a screw holding them together and clamping the cable outers - I would have thought to fashion something similar from either plastic or a thin strip of aluminium would't be too difficult.

I have some clips that serve the purpose you want on one of my machines - I'll see if I can find the details and where I got them - I'll report back.

Quicker than I thought . ... this is the item I bought (and red for my red bike!) - the way that they are made would, I think, be possible to cut two to leave a stub of the joining part and then glue one each end of a short piece of plastic tube of some sort . . . perhaps with something inside the tube to keep it straight and the cables apart.

I used them to clip the cables together and keep them tidy as I have a pretty short stem on the bike - and I also have some wrappng round the cables where they brush the headtube - I know you're trying to avoid that but perhaps belt and braces for the issue?

I have some of those to hold Rohloff cables apart (Standard brake outer) To hold them further apart I use a dummy piece of cable between them, with each cable  attached to this.

It appears that what I was looking for was Jagwire Housing Holder, which might be discontinued but easy to get on the Bay of E.
