Soooo. There's been a flood, and the subject of building on flood plains comes up.
*sigh*
Building on flood plains. Is not in and of itself the bad idea.
Building shit buildings on flood planes however, that is a bad idea.
Let's take a Journey to the Dutch City of Maasbommel.
The city has been around in some form or other for at least a millennia. On the edge of the city, outside the protective dijks is a row of homes.
They look like any normal modern home. Sure the architect had some fun. But it's recognisably a home.
But if you look closer.
You notice a pillar.
These homes are built with a big concrete box that floats as their foundation. They are anchored to this pillar which keeps them fixed in x and y, but allows for movement in z.
Some of them are more obviously floating than others. (and hard to photograph). The idea being that these homes can handle the flooding. Water goes up, so does the house. Water goes down, so does the house. You may wanna keep an eye on the forecast and go park the car elsewhere when the water is gonna rise.
But it's a flood plane, and people can live on it.
Another option of course is to build things on stilts.
This is a hurricane resistant home in Texas. Designed to handle temporary flooding.
Having buildings on flood planes isn't inherently bad. Having the wrong buildings is. We just have to be a bit more open to the idea of new designs, and not the copy pasta shit that the developers tend to favour.
