Take the cable out and work the inner lever so it is in the lowest position. Please note that the inner lever will sometimes not engage the shifter with the hood pulled forward.
Once the shifter is fully released, refit the cable and make sure it is fully engaged before refitting the shifter
Cheers Torslanda, think that's done the trick.
I peeled back the hood, and could see that the cable end 'cylinder' was not in it's groove. I had not checked whether the cable end was securely in place the first time around
something to remember. So having detached the shifter, I pulled the cable out and worked the inner lever, replaced the cable (which was useful in itself) etc etc. Thought... will it /won't it... and it did! Shifted up to the large chain ring! So here's hoping it's all good.
Now for the fine tuning and working out how trim adjustment helps...
Phil, I did try the bolt underneath the shifter, but it was tight.
Brucey, thanks - must look into shimano lubricants.
