I think my knowledge originated in a Ladybird book...
... or my brother's recitation from wherever.

I have a mnemonic handed on to me by an uncle some 40 years ago.  It is certainly memorable, but even then it wasn't something one would repeat in polite company and I'm certainly not going to write it down here.

It was the anatomy mnemonics for the cranial nerves that were really rude....

It occurs to me that it should -between digital photography,  and clever software that can identify objects and colours-  be possible to take a photo and have the colour codes read automatically.
Seems there's a few apps that claim to do that. Though not tried it myself, has some mixed reviews. Would depend on the quality of your phone camera and lighting etc.

the mnemonic my father taught me was not only racist but misogynistic too!

when i spent a lot of time building 'lectronic stuff in the 80s I could pretty much id them by sight from the bands

To make it easier: if it is a 10% (like cheap resistors in the 80s claimed to be) then there are only 12 possible values plus a exponent so you could guess, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E_series_of_preferred_numbers for explainer

i agree on various points made above like sometimes the colours are a bit vague and blue ones are more difficult to read

Other parts also use colours too and they are difficult to interpret also
