Odd pain in knees and hips
« on: 03 January, 2014, 10:11:03 am »
I am commuting on a mtb and its been OKish using my normal spds. I then put on my winter boots (with the cleats in a similar position) and am getting two different kinds of pain.

1. On the right leg, there is sometimes a slight strain in front of the hip joint. Its not always there but it comes and goes

2. On the left knee, its the muscle just on top of the knee on the outer part of the leg.

I think the cleats are right, but any adjustment to one, means that the leg that was OK before then starts hurting.

I am roughly on KOPs but its difficult to tell as when I ride I know I ride toe down, which pushes me slightly forward.

My seat height is about right, I think, using all the internet methods prescribed.

I don't think I am rocking my hips but the position is slightly different as I am on a mtb and not a road bike.

Has anyone any tips, as the other option is to do a bike fit in the summer.

thanks

Are your winter boots larger than your regular shoes?  I have to set the cleats on mine slightly further back to put them in the same place relative to my foot.

Also the soles may well be thicker, meaning a slight rise in saddle height may be advisable.

I played around a bit and lower the saddle. I had also had the cleats a bit more forward than I expected.

Still messing around but its a bit hard at the moment. :-[

+1

Hurting at the FRONT of the knee indicates saddle is low.

How long is the commute ride?

Watching somebody pedal is a better diagnosis method.
Wheel meet again, don't know where, don't know when...

"I don't think so."

Not unless the saddle is 40 mm adrift.

Pain in the front of the knee during a ten mile commute could be:-

Saddle is 4 inches too low.
Injured muscle and/or ligament.

It strikes me these boots are heavier than shoes, adding to rotating weight and straining your quads.

I am fairly happy with the saddle height, but the pain is above my knee in the muscle.
