Would be greatful if you could advise
I inadvertently deleted my Garmin Basemap (the World Map) I'm led to believe that this will cause issues for the display features of my Openfiets Map or any ither map come to that, case in point cycling through Heathersage today I noticed minor roads had disappeared.
Questions: What exactly is the purpose of the pre installed Garmin World map?
Do I need to reinstall it?
if so how and where do I get it from?
thanks for any guidance

What model GPS device?
For most of them, I think it only shows the basemap when zoomed right out, or looking at an area not covered by any other maps. Usually the basemap is not very detailed or accurate, ie it only has a few main roads and cities. It shouldn't affect what roads are shown when you are zoomed in.
The basemap may also contain elevation data, which it uses for showing hill shading or elevation profiles.
If you run the firmware updater software, it should reload the missing basemap.

Updater page (http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=5553) says use Garmin Express.

Or try the Garmin Webupdater. http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=931
In my experience it usually works better than Garmin Express.
