The Julian calendar is 13 days behind the Gregorian, but the Wowbaggerian is 50 years behind!

Ah, so you don't have webbed feet then?  I became an 'outgoer' when I went off to Uni and apart from family visits haven't been back.  So I stand and watch from a safe distance on the other side of the Pennines. My brother's a farm manager in the Fens.  He's been to Greece (once) and Scotland (once), and that's it.  Don't think I need to say more.......

But I do like the Fenland skyscapes, and the solitude of the Wash marshes, the seabirds, the spuds, cauliflower cheese, Batemans beers, Lincolnshire sausages (which I now have to bulk buy by mail order from Boston).....

Tenth wedding anniversary today.  Went out at lunchtime and bought a new pair of shoes to replace the ones I wore on my wedding day (which were getting a bit dog-eared)...

Ipswich is NOT in the Fens. It’s in East Angular. ( copyright J.Goody)
Anyways, Wowbagger is in Sarfend in Essex.

You misread me, I'm saying Ipswich timewarp is similar to Fenland timewarp, NOT that Ipswich is Fenland-ish.

Anyway, Essex, Suffolk, all the same innit?  ;D

Today, Jane and I had lunch in a pub in Tillingham*, which is about as far east as you can get in Essex. Whereas most of the county has now been subsumed by people talking Dagenese, the old Essex accent still survives in Tillingham. The other people in the pub were talking about the number of foxes that are about this year, the fact that the hunt will be after them pretty soon, and that there are increasing numbers of wild boars being found in the area.

*I don't know if it still survives, but some years ago there was a football team yclept Tillingham Hotspur.

John Lewis staff get six months (paid) which might explain why their stuff is so expensive.  Let's not look a gift horse in the mouth, though!  If they make me redundant before I can take it (a constant risk - the big boss is a hatchet man), they do pay me the six weeks.

as an employee in good standing I could ask for a sabbatical, unpaid, and at the approval of the bosses. I doubt I'd get approval atm

Apparently a few years back there was discussion at JL about dissolving the partnership and becoming a public business, which would have meant a lump sum of at least £50K cash to every member of staff. The board never even considered putting it to the partnership for a vote; perks like that might explain why it didn't ever stand a chance of passing...

(Apparently it's a nice place to work, if a bit weird and cult-like in many respects)

Mindful of the fact that accommodation in Northern Climes sells out very quickly, Miss von Brandenburg has just booked next June's trip to Shetland!  There will be Vikings, and puffins.  Oh yes!

Enjoy! My great friend Fiona has an Air b'n'b pad in Lerwick.

Enjoy! School terms finish early in Shetland. Don't forget to go to bed! It's light enough to read outdoors round the clock in June in Shetland.

A little while back, I was grumbling about not being able to find a chimney sweep who would not only answer their phone, but also turn up and, you know, sweep chimneys.
Well, last week I spotted a van proclaiming such a service parked up on the High Street.  I immediately phoned the number displayed and found that she was actually in the hair dresser's on a day off.  No matter, she was happy to talk business and we agreed on a price and date (tomorrow).

However, I was a little surprised when she called in today - a day early.
"Oh well", I thought as I opened the door, "I suppose that coming round to tell me she can't make it is an improvement on just not turning up"
But no.  Seems she's got a TV film crew wanting to do a piece on her for the S4C program "Heno" and she was asking if it was OK if they came into our house to film her working.

More good news.
The chimney sweeping will be free.  :D

Right. Better get the vacuum cleaner out and start tidying up a bit.   ;)
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

Does this mean we'll all be able to have a gawk at the inside of the Basil Burg? Make sure you put the Marmite out and align the cranks!
