I remember getting a bit teary at one of the Adrian Mole books, but it could just be when you're at that age, you start losing grandparents etc. so it just sets you off.

I have an Arthur Mee encylopedia beside me as I type.

It is on the bottom shelf.  A fascinating read.

Yep - they are kind of a historical document letting you know how the world worked when the map was mostly British. Very strange to read now in a way, but a fascinating window onto recent history and how we viewed the world. There is a full set at my parents house. I suspect I'll inherit them one day - they deserve to be preserved.

I have been ill for the last couple of days and re-read The Other Wind, the last Earthsea book by Ursula Le Guin. She has an amazing ability to capture the ordinary beauty of love and home, even when she is writing about imaginary lands. She can always make me cry and this book has moments that certainly did.

Just finished this. I didn't cry. My overwhelming emotion was anger rather than sorrow.

Just ordered that one.

First book I can remember crying over was at the end of The Hobbit.  It would have been around 1983 (the book came with the text adventure videogame on my ZX Spectrum).  In my defence, I was 10 years old and hadn't been introduced to the company of women.

I've had a lump in my throat at some stories, but not many.  I tend to be more affected by films when they touch on certain themes.

I cried laughing at "Wilt" many years ago.

I read "Wilt on High" after that and, whilst on a full train, on my way to work, laughed so suddenly that I blew coffee out of my nose and attracted the attention of most of the carriage.

Perhaps "Books that made you blow coffee out of your nose" should be another thread.

My overwhelming emotion was one of futility. Hence why I cried for them.

I must be the only person that ever managed to cry at TWO iof Terry Pratchets DiscWorld books!
1/. In "The 5th Elephant" where Lady Sybil does the Opera bit it is written so emotionally!
2/. "Reaperman" where Death asks Azrael for more time for Miss Flitworth and the answer is a single page YES

I think that the Alzheimers thing has changed his writing but in a positive way!  His more recent books are generally my favourite ones.

The first book I remember crying over was I Am David and the most recent, just finished reading, If This Is A Man and The Truce by Primo Levi. They are the only books that I have ever read dealing with that subject matter.

There have been many others in between though, as mentioned above by TT, Flowers for Algernon stands out in my mind.

Books make me more teary than films - but it doesn't happen very often.  Four I can think of are:

Atonement - Ian McEwan
What Happens Now - Jeremy Dyson
After You'd Gone - Maggie O'Farrell
The Glass Palace - Amitav Ghosh

At least two occasions were when I was reading on a beach...not the best place to be all snotty nosed and bleary eyed.
