Meths burning.

As another convert to the Meths burning brigade the only downside seems to be soot. I believe you can improve the situation by adding water. The question is "How Much ?"

I believe 5% is the norm. Or use Dutch/Belgian/French Meths (Alcohol a bruler)

Do you take water with your meths?

I've never found soot to be a problem.  I wash my pans after cooking in them.

Hell of a lot better than the stench of alcool à bruler.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

Why do I have a picture of Robert Duvall in my head here?  ;D
It's a reverse Elvis thing.

We teach Scouts cooking on wood to put washing up liquid on the outside of billies at the beginning of camp, and wash it off at the end (obviously they wash the insides during the camp too!)

Dunno if it would help here, never tried enough meths cooking to see the issue as major.

It works, but I don't really find the soot to be a problem.  Either it comes off with a wipe on the grass / in the washing-up, or it doesn't.  If it doesn't, then it's not going to do any harm.  I see no problem in having a blackened pan if it's not coming off on things.

^^ This.

A quick wipe on the grass shifts everything that would otherwise cause an issue.  Anything else can either be left for character, or removed at a later date in th comfort of ones own home using liberal application of elbow-grease via a brillo pad.
You are in a maze of twisty flat droves, all alike.

Give your cooking pots a wipe with neat washing up liquid before using easier to get soot off which ideally shouldn't be there in the first place some answers below.

I've never fussed about the soot but after our tour this year I went mad with wire wool and cleaned up my trangia pots.

I sometimes add a small dash of water to my meths ...

Depends where you are buying your meths.
In the UK then a little water needs to be added. In mainland Europe never had an issue where it is readily available as a cleaning product in every supermarket.
