Title: Android & Memory Map
Post by: robgul on 25 January, 2013, 04:16:41 pm
I've been trying to make some sense of this ....  I have trawled the Mem Map forum and  website but all is confusion.

I'm looking for step-by-step instructions please :

I want to have Mem Map maps (from a DvD, versions from around 2009/2010 - OS50, IGN France 250 and London AZ - i.e. not from the online Digital Map Shop) - at the moment I just want the maps and will worry about routes etc later.

I want to store my existing map files on my Android tablet and/or phone and be able to view the maps when NOT connected to the Internet.

I have downloaded the app from Google Play ... what now? - where are the maps to be stored on the device?  - how are they accessed?

Help please!!!!!!!

Rob

I have the same issue. When I have been to the tuit shop I intend to get a new micro SD card for the maps.

There are alternative Android apps that can use Memory Map maps - MM Tracker and AlpineQuest.
Though these don't work with newer Memory Map maps, because the maps use some sort of encrypted format. I'm not sure if 2009/10 would be the newer format or not? Are your map files QCT (old format) or QC3 (newer)?

MM Tracker was installed on my old phone ... it seems the Mr Google has been stopped from delivering it now (I think, as a result of legal action from Mem Map) - bit of a pisser as I'd paid a fiver for it ... just off to try Alpine Quest (my maps are .qct (i.e. the "old" format

Rob

EDIT : Alpine Quest seems to work a treat (the free version only lets you open 1 map per session .. just close it and open again - BUT I shall try it for a few days and then buy the full product)   Thanks for the info.

... and I looked up MM Tracker and there's an explanation about the withdrawal from Android Market/Google Play

You could probably find the MM Tracker apk to download somewhere if you wanted to. Or copy it off your old phone, then install it on the new one.
Though I'm not sure if it will work properly on newer Android versions.

Your message passed my edit in the ether a moment ago ... old phone was sold on ebay (factory reset) ... but I'm looking around for a download of the apk

OK ... I'm starting to get some sense with the maps etc ... I've loaded Alpine Quest and the .qct maps ... works fine on the Nexus 7 - no reason to doubt that it'll work on the phone too.

Now - is there a simple solution for the  .qc3 maps?  - they each seem to have 2 files - a very small  .qct and a big .qc3  - presumably the big one is the data and the other one is some sort of "controller"

... again - any help appreciated to use them offline

Thanks

Rob

Hmm - well, I bought the Alpine Quest app and that works a treat on the Nexus 7 with the "old" qct maps ... but doesn't work on the Huawei Ascend G300 phone ... it can't seem to find the map files??

Anyway - I've found the MM Tracker apk as a download so I'll give that a go.

Still grappling with the .qc3 issue ... I only have one map that I need in that format ... I've e-mailed Mem Map for some advice ...

Maybe the phone is mounting the SD card in a strange place. There's an option in the Alpinequest settings to set the memory card path. I think the default is /mnt/sdcard , but some phones use /mnt/ext_card or /mnt/sdcard2 instead.

Progress - I have Mem Map running on the tablet with all my maps - even uploaded some routes  ... the "manual" had an error  ??? - as well as Alpine Quest for the .qct maps.

... now grappling with Alpine Quest on the phone - can't seem to find the directory for the maps to store.

[It seems that I can only run Mem Map on 1 Android device so the tablet will do]

Do I take it from this that Memory Map's own Android app doesn't work properly?  I have recently bought an android tablet, and was planning to put MM onto it.  I've been using MM on the PC for years - currently on my second version, which appears to use the .qct extension files (v5 I think).

Phil - yes it does work on an Android tablet (Google Nexus 7 in my case) ... the real problem is that the "instructions" make not a lot of sense!

I have 2 sorts of maps :  .qct (V5) - the "old style"  and  .qct + .qc3 the "new DMS style" where the qct + qc3 files need to work together as they are encrypted.     Running the old .qct only maps requires the "compatability" software that Mem Map sells for about £15 (you get a free trial on it ... I have that and it works, so far)

Having spent a lot of time over the weekend I've got it all working in a way that suits me ... there is a better option, in my view, but perhaps not for an open forum  - you have my e-mail addy - if you want to know more drop me a message ....

For all the aggro over the weekend the results with map display etc are stunning on the Nexus ... and worth the effort.
