Video to individual frame files conversion...
« on: 09 October, 2017, 09:33:26 pm »
Can anyone recommend a decent free/opensource bit of software that will take AVI video and convert it to constituent files e.g. png.  It used to be possible with VLC, but I can't see anyway to set output prefs so as to get e.g. 250 frame files from 5 secs of 50fps video.  Anyone know if VLC has this 'hidden' anywhere?

Seems it is possible in VLC with the "scene" filter. Though depends on how fast your computer is, it might struggle to extract every frame while playing it. So you might just end up with numberous copies of the same frame.

Or you could use FFMPEG from a command line.

Or easiest option is probably to use VirtualDub. Just open your video, then go to File, Export, Image sequence.

Cheers - VirtualDub looks good.
