A lot of old tandems (particularly French ones) had the cross-over drive at the front.  The captain could see and hear if the chain was scraping on the front mech and early front deraileurs were often operated by a lever on the seat tube.

IWTOT.

(I Want Two Of Those - so that the patterns match up when pilot and stoker walk side-by-side.  Oblivious to those calls of "Get a Room"...)
