Diarrhoea and vomiting
« on: 23 December, 2010, 12:10:51 pm »
I have been having a very bad week, as per title which I really don’t want to go into major details about.
Started Sunday morning, thought I was ok on Tuesday evening so went into work Wednesday, I wasn’t. On my ride home I threw up and I am off work again today. It’s not nearly as bad as it has been but it’s still bad enough.
I am considering risking a trip to Boots to try to find something medicinal to ease my symptoms. What suggestions does the panel have?

Norovirus a.k.a. Winter Vomiting Bug.

Lots of sachets of rehydration stuff, and some balsam bogroll.

Then comfort food, chicken soup, whatever you can bear to eat.

D&V is self-limiting, and clears after a few days - 4-5 days of spray-at-both-ends hell, usually.  It's preposterously contagious so boil the whole house in bleach.  Expect to take about as long again to get your strength back.
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

Seems very similar to the symptoms in the video, bloated stomach, aching limbs etc though that part seemed to pass quite quickly.
I tried the tomatoe soup thing when I hadnt eaten for a day, then it came....
Looks like I will stick with the fruit juice for now

Make sure any fruit juice is well diluted.

Get further advice from a pharmacist rather than just picking something off the shelf yourself.

Half strength Isostar/Gatorade/Lucozade Sport is more palatable than Dioralyte and easier to take in adult quantities.
GWS!
Consider half-strength fruit and vegetable juices.

Warm is easier than cold, IME, too.  Make it hot and let it cool.

As others have said, keep hydrated. Hope you're back in the world of the living soon! Most important wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands! Sanitise absolutely everything you touch. You might consider buying some hand sanitising wipes/fluid for both of you to use.

As an aside, Norovirus is unpleasant, but not a patch on C-Diff. C-Diff damned near killed me and left me two stones lighter in the space of ten days in hospital on a drip with renal shutdown and a BP of 80/40.

You have my complete sympathy.

I am an emitophobe. As such, my methods to avoid Norovirus stray well into the OCD territory.

Never put anything in your mouth that you can't verify the cleanliness of.
Never eat out in places that might attract problems.
Wash your hands. A lot.
Avoid people (if you can).

Those of us who play this out as part of their mental health inevitably life restricted lives.

Hope you get better soon, and don't live in (irrational) dread of NV.
