I think it might be the end of the world
« on: 23 July, 2008, 03:56:56 pm »
I came to work by bike this morning and I've just cycled down to Portobello to see a client and then cycled back.

There is not a breath of wind. At all.

This is so far removed from the usual Edinburgh reality that I can only assume it's Armageddon.

I fear you may be right - it's spread down to hertfordshire now.

But but but... The trees are moving here...

Perhaps they're dancing. Or perhaps there is a wind after all and the world's not going to end.

Either that or Armageddon is following you around?  :P

It's been that sort of a week. And let's face it, if Armageddon was going to start anywhere in Edinburgh, it'd be this part of town.

When I was much younger I used to think that Armageddon was a place in Northern Ireland...

No wind in Embra?
The wind's too strong in Glasgow for it to know which way it's blowing: I had a SW tailwind on my way home & 1.5 miles later an E headwind.  Earlier, I had a N & a S wind 2 miles apart.  & I thought it was supposed to be windier on the East coast...

*has suspicion that East coasters just moan more*

It's another absolutely still day and I'm not coping with it. I think that Edinburgh people are like sharks. You know how sharks die if they stop swimming - I think we get acclimatised to constant never-ceasing wind rushing up our noses and when it stops completely, we find it a real effort to have to breathe in.

I would give anything for a small eunuch to fan me with a giant peacock feather fan all night. It's so muggy. I'm slippery with sweat and not in a good way.

[Pedant]

It is a myth that sharks must 'swim or die'. In sharks the liver replaces the swim bladder found in bony fish and is oil-filled allowing sharks to be slightly negatively buoyant.  This means that if they are not swimming then they will gradually sink.  However, sharks live at all sorts of depths and most sharks have an amazing range of depths they can tolerate.

If you dive in areas with sharks, it is not uncommon to find them 'resting' on a sandy sea floor.

I'm not small and there are two other reasons for me to fail that particular test, but I'd volunteer to do something with your fan all night.
