Thanks for that... so Audax Club Mid-Interim Nation of Essex is a slightly more complicated alt-version of where we are now... however happily, this also moves the COG further to the West, which I am sure will aid OD's alpine training (as in exercise rather than Jimmy's fav transport option) no end as he will have to ride to more Western pubs from now on! :D

Does anyone fancy a spin tomorrow morning?  I don't have a specific plan so open to suggestions.

There seems to be some people riding from Dunmow tomorrow morning, involving some non-road sections. 100km or 50km options.

I know, but I can’t be arsed to drag myself over to Dunmow.

Any of the acme lot have any experience of places for camping within maybe 50 miles cycle of the centre of the pre nuclear holocaust universe? Have got provisional permission for a night away over first may bank holiday. Was wondering if somewhere discreet might be found along the sea wall from tollesbury towards mersea island

We're away that weekend otherwise I might have come with you.  I'm sure you'll be able to find somewhere for a cheeky bivvy.

I have just submitted a TripAdvisor review for yesterday evening's target pub...  ::-)

Quote
Yesterday evening (Wednesday 18 May 2018) myself and about 9 of my cycling friends dropped in on The Old Crown at about 9:15pm.  Most Wednesday evenings throughout the year we cycle to an Essex pub to enjoy a chat and a few pints.

We chose The Crown as we have been before and several of us have eaten there with our families; our previous experiences have always been good.  When we arrived the gentleman behind the bar didn't look too pleased to see us but served us a couple of rounds nonetheless.  His colleague, a young lady, was very friendly.  About 10:15pm, just as we were about to order a third round, the chap behind the bar suddenly announced they were closing for the evening; by this time we were the only customers left in the pub.

We have been riding to Essex pubs on a Wednesday evening since 2009, most pubs are delighted to see us, often encouraging us to return, after all we normally spend over £100 per visit on beer and bar snacks.  This was the first time a pub has ever closed early on us.

It was such a shame as we were having an enjoyable evening and The Old Crown is a lovely pub.  After being turfed out we shot off to The Sun in Feering who welcomed the £40 we put in their till!

Well it's one less pub to worry about for the forward planning sect.

It was a shame as we were pretty much just an Oaky away from a full house.

Last night's milder weather brought out Jiber, Tomsk, OD, the Hustler, Jem, the Ancient Mariner, some old geezer in an Alpe D'Huez top, Stanners Kiwi, Fandango and a welcome return to two wheels for the BFC.  Obviously 11 thirsty cyclists were not enough to sustain a small village pub.

Nevertheless, it really was a pleasure to ride home in shorts.  At this rate, we will have the sandals out soon

Thank you Steve for your review. All I can do is apologise for this very unfortunate experience that you had at my pub. We always welcome people drinking in the pub and there has been many a night when myself or one of the staff has sat for hours while people finish their drinks. I don't know why this happened to you but will look into the reasons. I am glad you were able to get a drink at The Sun and so your whole evening was not spoilt.

OD I'm planning on a few small weekend adventures this year so will let you know.... I was gonna take my tent but now eyeing up bivi bags.

Ref the pub I genuinely think the owner is pulling their hair out. Unless your the weather spoons your probably struggling as a pub so desperate for any trade. I know a Witham pub my brother and I frequent let us have an event there at short notice for as put a good amount of money into the till

Sure, let me know if you're planning an adventure, I'll come along if I can.

Yes, I imagine our friend at The Crown won't be getting the Employee of the Month t-shirt anytime soon!
