Title: Lavender Fields
Post by: clarion on 16 July, 2012, 06:26:38 pm
In Victorian times, Carshalton et environs was a herb growing area, and was particularly known for growing lavender for toiletries, which was hugely popular at the time.  Apparently, there were hillsides full of it.  Now, sadly, no more, but you can get an impression of it from either the local allotments, where there is a communal lavender field, or the more commercial field near Oaks Park.  When we visited, there were hundreds of people there, including a Japanese coach party, all having fun and taking photos.  Here are a few of mine:

The bike belonged to two women who were taking photos (one with a phone camera; the other with a DSLR):

The block of bright colour is really impressive:

A chum of mine who lives in Purley said they filmed part of a film there some time ago. Breaking news.
