Harry Hall personally sold me my British Eagle in 1986.

Mine was (in 1983) a present to myself after being dumped.

Looking back, it was a pretty good swap :)

Really Ancien:
A lot of shops used to badge up Holdsworths, I had a 'Bill Nickson' which was a Holdsworth Professional, a perfectly nice bike. Conversely you could get a custom built Raleigh or Carlton, which would be as good as any of the boutique makers, here's a link to a retro site and a 1997 Raleigh Special Products brochure.

The bike's prettier (these days) than the ex.

It's been bastardised  though, from being a 700C club/audax style bike to a 26" roughstough tourer.

In its original form I did LEJOG and an SR2000 on it.

Really Ancien:
It's a funny old trade the cycle business. I can remember going to Ribble Cycles in 1969 to get my first racer, it was a Carlton Continental, standard apart from alloy 'Nisi Evian' rims. Back then Ribble sold all sorts of stuff. I wonder when they moved into selling only their own bikes, they've been a remarkable success story. They're still have the same shop they started in in 1897, but I doubt they ever made their own frames.

Indeed, they've just moved into a new warehouse with in house ti building stuff.
