Now I'm back at my PC (can't copy from Flickr easily on the iPad) here's some shots of my old Pugsley:

Me neither, that's when you see the real advantage. Regular mountain bikes just sink right in. Only downside is that SPD's get clogged. Had to break off mid ride to visit my LBS and ask:

1. If they had any flats in stock

2. If so could I have them on credit as I didn't have my wallet

10  minutes later they were fitted and I was back on the trail
Title: Re: Your fatbike
Post by: bumper on 14 October, 2014, 10:48:37 am
That's good, I've gone back to flats too. Spds are too risky on rocky, technical sections. It's nice to dab down when it's going pear shaped

Like my bones and teeth too much ;D

I want snow and a fatbike to ride over it.

Even 1.75" tyres are bloody hard work over icy snow ruts. Constantly fighting tramlining and the jarring.

This thread is evil.

Just told my lbs that if they manage to find a Farley 6 in 21.5, I'll take it.

They've emailed TREK UK and are waiting for a response.

I went in and sat on a 19.6 they are fitting with XX1 earlier. It's a lovely bit of kit.

Bad bad thread. I don't need another bike... even though the Devinci Dexter has convinced me that fatter is better (2.35 vs 2.0) and I still miss my old rigid evo2.

They look like nice tyres for the purpose. Be good to catch up one morning if you've time too?

I've actually got most of the bits needed to build another Evo2 - i.e. frame, wheels most of a groupset - not that I really want one of those. If I can sort forks and brakes then it'll be ready to roll in a tatty fashion. Paint needed to make it beautiful, but fixing Sue's up has inspired me. I've been toying with a pair of Schwalbe Big Ben's in 26 by 2.35 to go on, as it seems the Super Moto is no longer actually available in 26 inch size. Probably a project for next year as I've got a Gillott to sort out first.

Nothing I can afford, plus I really love my LBS.

Shop can get Salsa or Surly, but are Mulkluk 3s really going to be £1900? If they were nearer the £1300, I could be tempted.

Surly completes are generally overpriced. Salsa tend to head into 'WTF?!' territory.

I built my El Mariachi fixed up for less than the cost of the SS complete build, and with better kit. Ditto for the Pugsley.

Am tempted by the Genesis Caribou. It's a question of 2014 vs 2015, hydraulic versus cable, 32 x 36 v 30 x 36. etc. Any thoughts? White vs Orange, if that's important :)

Would have to be unfaithful to my LBS.
Title: Re: Your fatbike
Post by: interzen on 21 October, 2014, 10:33:44 am
Hydraulic discs were the best upgrade I did to the Pugsley - nothing flash, Deore M595s, but with 180mm rotors they're evil stoppers.

The hardcore winter racers use cable discs run dry for obvious reasons, but in typical UK conditions there's no reason not to fit hydraulics, IMO.

I wasn't impressed with the Caribou, to be honest, but then again I think Genesis have lost the plot recently (doesn't stop my Croix de Fer being awesome, though). If you want a more 'race' oriented fat-bike then the On-One Fatty is worth a look - as an expedition bike it's worse than useless though (again, IMO)

If you can handle disloyalty to the LBS, you might want to see what sort of deals Sir Charlie Of Bikemonger might be offering on Mukluks et.al - I believe he's getting a new shipment from QBP in November so he might be keen to shift old stock.

Of course, if you happen to be near York and want to test drive an 18" singlespeed Pugsley then the offer is there - it's not like I'll be riding it for the forseeable future.

I like the 2014 white caribou. Couldn't get one in my size.

The new caribou is 1x10 too, no good for really steep stuff, lugging kit around. Of course you could add an expander to the cassette.

I've been lusting after the Salsa Blackborow DS, even if I could fake it by dinglespeeding Pugsley.

Won't happen anytime soon though, since most of my 'spare' money (hah!) is going towards funding next year's little excursion along the Continental Divide.

http://salsacycles.com/culture/introducing_bucksaw_carbon
Meh.
Whilst the Bucksaw is clearly popular enough that Salsa are doing it in carbon, it really doesn't do much for me. The whole suspension-onna-fatbike thing strikes me as an exercise in 'look what we can do!!11!one!'. OTOH, I expect that the DH crowd will be all over them.

There's also the fact that even by fat-bike standards it's going to be heart-stoppingly expensive1

More power to them.

1 - word has reached my ears that you're probably looking at around £3k for the frame and £7k for a full build.  My sources have been known to be wrong, but not that often ...

That looks good but for some reason, full suss fatbikes don't appeal to me. They look good as a hardtail but I can't get into them as fs, but a big yes to carbon, maybe belt drive too.

I think IZ is right, the full sus ones will have the gravity assisted guys all over them.  They went, half heartedly, in that direction in the late '90's with bikes that could take the Nokon tyres (3.5") but it seemed to fizzle out.  29ers don't seem to be making much headway, nor 650B.

Although a fatbike is a 29er!

Took mine to a trail centre last night once I was prepared to commit it was amazing just how much grip I had so I can easily see a full suss fatbike working for downhill, but I think they'd need more travel than the 100mm or so that hey currently have

Yes and no.
Effective wheel diameter is about that of a typical 29er, but the rims, tyres and whatnot are 26"

As for 29ers not making much headway, I can't agree with that - for the sort of riding I do there's a significant difference between the handling of a 26er and a 29er, to the degree that I've 'harmonised' my stable such that the only non-700c bike is ... Pugsley (it also minimises the risk of accidently packing a 26er innertube when you head out. DAHIKT)

650b is just another marketing ploy.

Would love a fatbike, but it needs to wait as I've just been given a lovely A S Gillott that will need a bit of fettling - its previous owner was at one time the record holder for London-Brighton-London, but it's too big for his son.

Also need to build a 'new' mtb for the older bairn. I've a spare pair of 26 inch wheels and most of an EVO2 floating around, but there will no doubt be COSTS, so no fatbike for a while....

Love the dinglespeed and rifle

Thanks all. It belonged to Tim at Sideways, I've basically stripped it all back to the frame and rebuilt with new parts, bearings etc.*. He'd not cleaned it since owning it, maybe a wipe with a damp rag

*That's a slight understatement, it's taken a week to clean off, polish out scratches etc. and get to a new state. My wife thought I had pissed my money away ;D

It should be muddy tomorrow Gus

Went out on it early this morning. It's completely different to the mukluk.

The forks make the front really flickable, easy to lift too compared to the mukluk. Forgot how a Hope rear hub can clear the woods of wildlife ;D just makes you pedal more ! Just need to tinker with the gears a bit, then it's ready for its next ride out.

Glad I went down this route with the new bike, almost got a caribou/mukluk3 instead. This is definitely more of a trail tool. To be fair though, the mukluk2 was purchased for bike packing. It's perfect for that job, very stable even when it's carrying all of my kit.

I now don't have to worry about changing tyres, Nates on one, Larrys on the other

I've just cleaned myself up, having a brew, then de-crudding the bike!

Had a few rides on these now, much better than Mary bars. They're wider with a slightly different angle/sweep back. They come in carbon and aluminium flavours, recommended

If they're OG Carbons, and they look like them, then they're 31.8

Methinks both Pugsley and the El Mariachi might be going on a diet ...

Thanks, fancy a pair as a change from the Mary bars but that will need a new stem and I've got a nice Hope one on the Puffin ???

Maybe try on teh Swift first as that has a no name stem and is a little long

I face a similar dilemma - whilst Pugsley has an On-One stem which is due to be replaced anyway, the ElMar has a Thomson  :-\

On the other hand, shifting a bit more weight off the Tour Divide bike is a Good ThingTM and a tubeless Pugsley with carbon bars will be relatively svelte too.

Ah well, not long until pay-day.

PaulF  and interzen, if handlebar fettling happens, does that mean there might be one or two sets of one-careful-owner-from-new 25.4 black Marys up for sale?
As that's just what I need for one or both of the two commuter bikes (one for each end of the train journey) and on-one are out of stock and not re-stocking....

Having thought about it a bit, and with the aid of some BEER to lubricate the thought processes, I'm probably going to be putting a pair of the OG Carbon bars on Pugsley in the very near future. Compared to my other bikes, the fatty doesn't get ridden as much and it'll be a good(ish) way of determining whether or not they suit me before I pull the trigger on a set for the El Mariachi.

If anyone is interested in a set of Easton EA70 flat bars, now's the time to say so ...

I'm torn with respect to using a GoPro - one part of me wants to rebel against endless uploading of boring1  footage by not doing it, whereas another part of me wants to stick one on the El Mariachi so I can shoot some of the more interesting bits of the Tour Divide (and/or my training rides)

1 - not to suggest that the above filmage is boring; I've not watched it so can't comment.

Tbh, I think they're a bit boring. I'm just doing it so I can remember some of my rides. I had hours of footage that got binned, either super boring or a bit shite.

I've just ordered 2x of the rear mud shovels that you all recommended a while back. I'm sick of having a big wide brown, poo stripe up my back. Fat tyres tend to fling massive muddy klinkers that stick like mad.

I enjoyed that.

I liked the variety of different shots (looking from the head tube backwards is good). Perhaps getting a stick mount to get the camera further from the bike looking backwards or looking forward from behind the saddle.

Brevity is the key with these sorts of video, so the more left out the better! If that makes sense!

I'm contemplating different mounts, definitely getting the chest mount. They do a pole  but I don't fancy lugging it around with me. You get funny looks with it mounted on top of your head, a 4ft pole won't help ;D

I've found a couple of different places to mount the camera on the bike. The only problem is mud fling blocking the lens. I had to lose lots of good footage because of that. Still, every use is a learning curve.

What tyres you on Paul?

Don't clean it , wait until it snows, then it all drops off with the snow

The snow isn't as good as last night, when it was fresh. It's a bit crap when it's turned to solid ice :-\

Got a Floater on the back, Nate up front.

Had to clean it as I'm doing the SPAM challenge tomorrow, not because I'm fussy I just want the bike closer to it's original weight!

How was it Paul?

Lots of mud and pushing uphill?

Actually a great day out, only had to push up a few hills but with almost 3000' of climbing in 50k (sorry for the mixture of units!) that's not too bad. Mud wasn't an issue for me a least ;D and I wasn't the last home.

Nice section through Imber with a couple of tanks to view. Next time will probably do the 35k as a lot of the extra section was on roads.

Certainly did, although I think the burger afterwards (highly reccomended) and teh subsequent binge eating may have neutralised the losses.

Think I was more used to then the cyclocrossers, was great zooming past them on the more slippery downhill sections. Of course they then passed me as the terrain flattened out...

If I lived closer to where they make mud or snow, a fat bike would be a serious consideration.

I headed out to the Berwyns again yesterday, had an intention of doing an overnighter. This didn't happen, grinding uphill in the cold weather made me realise my pneumonia hasn't cleared up fully :(

Just did the day ride. It was very windy and very cold, there's still snow up on the tops. I dint manage to get many pics, I was too cold to keep on stopping.

last night and the night before, the tracks were absolutely covered in toads and newts. I had to get off the bike and carry it on some sections, even then I had to watch where I placed my feet.

The noise by the pools was amazing, picture a dawn chorus, but at night with toads

Is that a Jones hub in your picture bumper? Thought they had an odd spacing?
Title: Re: Your fatbike
Post by: bumper on 08 April, 2015, 09:22:29 am
It was pretty boggy everywhere, expected it to be more dried out after a week of sunshine!

The bike came with that hub, wouldn't be my choice for the price! It'll be replaced with a Hope to match the rear once the bearings need replacing

I think the spacing throws the disc outboard slightly, I don't think it'd fit the mukluk but it fits the carver fork nicely.

Jones hubs are 135mm OLN - the axle is non-standard, though.

May swap the wheels over when I go to Scotland again in June. The larrys roll well on the marge lites, of course it will probably piss it down now I've said that. the marge lites are better on rocks than the daryls, already scraped the darryls on a rocky descent >:(

Chubby, rather than fat. Annoyingly, the factory install tubeless strips weren't very effective. I've since used gorilla tape to sort it.

Won't get a chance to ride it 'til the weekend, but playing around in the street, it's great fun. Wheelies like nothing else. Chainstays are very short - 422mm from the centre of the crank bolt to the centre of the qr.

50mm Mulefats

It's got plenty of clearance. The forks can take 3.4s, and the rear has at least as much clearance.

Yes - not sure whether to get a frame bag or not. If Alkpit has a medium possum in black, I'd get one. Mostly, I suspect I just take it around the local trails.

If anyone fancies doing a day of "how many laps of Gisburn can we face", I'd be up for it.
Title: Re: Your fatbike
Post by: bumper on 01 June, 2015, 07:07:35 pm
I'm not keen on frame bags. They stop me from using the cage mounts and make it hard to lift a fatbike.

It would be good to arrange a forum offroad bivvy trip. I'm going to try an overnighter in Wales this week, the weather may put a stop to that though! I'm on Mull June/July too. A Gisburn trip would be good late summer

Logistically, Gisburn is a good location for me - it's rideable from York (70 miles or so) but there are relatively straightforward train options too (Skipton or Gargrave)

Just need to get my confidence back - I've not ridden nearly as much as I'd like since I broke my wrist last year  :-\ Hopefully I'll get a couple of overnighters in on the Moors between now and whenever, too.

Partially alpkitted up. Drybag works ace on the Jones bars - no harness required. Got a fuel pod coming.

Next change will be a 26 or 28t direct mount chainring. Think 30T will be a bit much for the Peak 200 and the BB200 that I have in the diary.

Title: Re: Your fatbike
Post by: DrMekon on 04 July, 2015, 01:19:22 pm
Comfy and quick.

I got it primarily for long distance ITT type events (http://selfsupporteduk.net/), but the super short chainstays make it incredibly flickable. I'll soon have my Whyte 901 up for sale. The handling, both in terms of steering and how chuckable it is, feel more like a 26er than the 29ers I've tested, but it has more of the traction and roll-over ability than any 29er I've tried. It's cushy like a fatbike, but without the bouncy tyres or self-steering I've experienced on them.

You could argue that the extra traction dumbs down riding, much like a full sus does compared to a hardtail. I'd agree, but I'm too old to care. The extra traction makes stuff I'd worry about on my 26er seem very easy indeed.

I am delighted with it. My only concern is quite how quickly I'm chewing through the rear tyre doing 50km a day on it commuting off road. I'm running Bontrager Chupacabras, which are supposed o be the best all rounder. I think I'll be lucky to get much more than three months out of the rear, which at ~£80 a pop is a pain.
Title: Re: Your fatbike
Post by: bumper on 12 December, 2015, 03:45:12 pm
I'm now full fat again.

After selling the 907 and planning on going 27.5+ for summer bikepacking duties, a test ride has swayed me back to full fat. A 28t chainring with a 42t rear just goes up those loose slopes so easily. The frame on the 907 wasn't the best for bikepacking duties because of the curved shape of the top tube. It was a pig to get stuff to fit inside the triangle.

I found the 650 wtb 2.8 tyres I tried a compromise of faster 29s trying to get the air cushioning and grip of fat. Fat just grips and cushions the ride.

The 907 is now in Wales and possibly the Netherlands. I miss it but it was a bike in every term, everyone had ridden it*. It was a cheap hussy!

A new steel Charge cooker 2 in bright blue is on the way, with a really nice discount. Wish it was here for tomorrows ride in Wales, but it'll be here for next weekend in Cumbria

That's got to be the ideal machine for outback touring. Might even roll over a double-gee without puncturing (well, one can hope)
But best off all, the corrugated gravel roads would just be smooooouth. Could make touring on forestry tracks an absolute joy.

Almost makes me want to move back to WA.

I'm guessing it's one of these spiky buggers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emex_australis

Quote
Emex australis, commonly known in English as southern threecornerjack,[1] devil's thorn,[citation needed] or double gee[2] (also doublegee, from the old Afrikaner name dubbeltge-doorn - 'devil's thorn'), or three-cornered jack, is a herbaceous plant of the Polygonaceae. It occurs indigenously in South Africa and is also an invasive species in Australia & Texas in the USA.

Not australian plant - introduced from South Africa and it is a curse. Not at all common but incredibly hard to eradicate.
As someone who ran around habitually barefoot, it was my job to locate and eradicate any of the bloody plants on the farm. This usually meant pulling up the plant, putting it (and it grows with bramble-like runners) in a metal drum, digging out the soil where it was found, then burning the lot. Then spending every evening running around the area where it was found looking for (ie standing on) stray thorns.

Sounds quite an adventure.

I've wondered a few times about the viability of the Canning Stock route on a fatbike. Sad to read that most of the wells are now disfunctional. When I was a kid we went on a school trip up there (via bus) and camped next to the wells for several nights. I was struck by the utility and history of the route.

Not really a fan of the outback (prefer the forest) but the stock route is interesting.

Holland Track is not quite in the league of the Canning Stock Route :)  Tom of Bicycle Nomad (https://bicyclenomad.com/) fame and Scott of Porcelain Rocket (http://www.porcelainrocket.com/) have ridden the Canning Stock Route (https://bicyclenomad.com/2013/11/02/canning-stock-route-riding-a-bicycle/).

I have a Mr Fusion v2 sitting at home awaiting my return from the UK from Scott hopefully. Next part of my bikepacking build.

The floaters were outgunned last night in the gloop, I had a job to keep the bike upright. Lots of left, right, left, right with a rear wobble on too. I had mammoths on a couple of weeks ago, scary.

Have you tried a mud hugger on the rear yet Paul? they're better than the shovel if you can get one to fit. Mine keeps most of the muck off the chainring area too.

Not yet but I'm tempted. When I had a front dérailleur I used a butchered crud catcher on the seat tube but as that relied on the mech to keep it in place it rubbed when I went single speed so I need a solution.

Lots of used fat bikes for sale, less than £500 too.

Yep. Acquired the frame second hand off Ebay. Chap I bought it off had it custom chromed by some top motorbike chromer in London. I was lucky enough to stumble across it. Currently built as 29+ with Alfine. Had it a few months and now considering full fat for winter mud.

Lucky indeed. That is smart!

Full fat isn't necessarily better in mud than 29+. Depends on the kind of mud you have and tyre choice obviously, but the extra float from full fat can be counterproductive in getting more grip in mud.

It was fantastic. I was able to get really close to them on the bike, they ran off when I was on foot. One of the walks I took is called pass of the hinds. I walked it a couple of years ago during rutting, I know how it got the name. The stags bellowing was eerie, it echoed around the mountains. There must have been 40 there the other day in small groups.

Just wish I had my camera and not the poxy phone when the deer showed up.

This is the pass at approx. 1500ft. As you can see by the cloud, it started to rain, heavily! I only took an xp1 which isn't weatherproofed so it had to go back into the bag. I camped just in the cloud on the second pic, a very rough night.

Did you ride over the rocks on your fat bike and what was it like?

I'm going for a couple of days holiday to Wales at the end of march, v tempted to try to find somewhere that I can hire a fat bike for a day.

I did that as a walk and a nights camp but next time I'll use the bike. It will involve lots of carrying and pushing though. Think I'll start from the harder Etive side up Lairig Eilide and back over Gartain. Lairig Gartain is an easier ride and if all else fails I can return via the road.

Most of my welsh rides involve rocks like the pic and I happily ride over them with no suspension, and at speed. I'm very happy with mine, I'm no lightweight and run low pressures all the time off road to get the cushioning from the tyres. I'm a rigid fan though so love it!

Very late to this thread ::-) But then this isn't really a fat bike forum is it ;D

From the first page of the thread I notice that someone has a Singular Puffin, so here's another one

I got it second hand as a rolling chassis so had to add stem, bars (currently On-One Marys but will be fitting Jones loops shortly), brakes - BB7s (actually these came with the bike), BB & cranks, rear mech and chain. Forks are Travers Fat Prongs, tyres are 45Nrth Vanhelgas. The frame bag is a prototype Wildcat Snow Leopard.
