'engagement' shoot a couple of days ago, for a [very] young couple whose wedding I'm doing the pics for over christmas.   They told me they loved black and white, which was lucky cos so do I...

That's gorgeous, Mike.  I love how you've isolated them in a sea of lovely out-of-focus background.  Care to share how you did it?  It almost looks like the Brenizer method!

It's a lovely shot, but for me there's a bit of a clash between the organic and the geometric
I can't help projecting the lines of the two hedges and of the gable end behind their heads. If they ended up conforming to the thirds rule they wouldn't disturb me.

Leica lens?  Some of them have quite distinctive bokeh.
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

Looking at the Flickr Exif data, it's a Canon 85mm f/1.8 at f/2.

This is one of those shots I wish I'd have taken  :)

Yes.  I imagine they will be delighted with that.

thanks all!  ESL - I agree completely, the hedge and shed spoil it for me.  When I've got time I'm going to 'shop out the shed, not much I can do about the other.

there's no witchcraft involved, just lucky lighting, a 2 minute B&W conversion in lightroom and a photogenic couple...  (& I'd never heard of the Brenizer method - homework required!!)

update:  googled brenizer method and I will never do that! Respect for those who do, it gives great results but far too much faff for me...

Spoil is too big a word, but it's always worth looking at the backgound for that sort of stuff, and trying to make it conform to the rule of thirds if you can't do anything about it.

Work do so photographing speakers at our in house symposium. Two gridded flashes, one FOH to pick out the speaker, gridded to miss the screen, and a second behind the speaker to act as a rim light.

At least one other forumite was there.

D80 was struggling for focus at times, especially using the less optimal edge sensors rather than the one cross-type.

Here is one without flash..

very impressive David! Could you manual focus it?

Out early, dog walking.

One technique worked, the other didn't.

It is simpler than it looks.

I was tempted. You had to get the AF point on a contrasty edge - the sillouette was the easiest and hope then that when (if, grr...) the speaker turns away from the slides and actually faces the audience, you can get a reasonable shot. Trying to get the slides as background and the speakers face in shot can be challenging. I should post some others but my Mac PSU cable has just died.

Tree planting at the weekend, this is one of the Woodland Trust's staff's kids, so none of the problems with public events. The street lamp in the background annoys me, but could be 'shopped, as could the power lines.

Couple of piccies at the woods this weekend...

Oak doesn't usually turn lovely colours - just goes a bit brown at the edges then falls off.  But this year some really lovely yellow hues in the leaves.

And with the little Fuji X100, some photos on one of our local roundabouts yesterday.  Soft light thanks to being slightly misty.  Was really pretty with all the yellow leaves on the floor, but it won't stay that way for long as they are going round hoovering them all up.

another couple shoot yesterday, for a couple getting married in February.  She spent about half an hour making sure I understood she liked dark, creamy black and white..  So here's a few:

Nice work there, Mike!

We were up at the National Poultry Show yesterday.  Here's Julian with our new hens:

I couldn't resist some of the complete characters at the show and inveigled a few of them into a portrait...

Sussex Whites? We have one of them.

Today was all about strange noises from young boys in skirts. Yes, it was the annual BB parade through the local town to and from their dedication service.

Mike,

Great compositions and processing.
If you are actively posing these couples, that might be your area to focus on improving. (Not my forte but I'm fortunate enough to be working daily with someone whose forte it is).

Nope, no lighting; just big glass and fairly high ISO.  It was pretty murky there, so I was working with big apertures.  I fluffed a few of the shots because my DOF was so thin and although my subjects were sharp, their chooks weren't.

Yes, I realised what you must have been working with when I saw that you'd had to sacrifice the focus on the feathers of the extended wing. :(
