David

I spent two years reviewing images of culverts, those images are better than a number of the professional ones I got from CCTV mounted on ROVs. Also those drains are in far better state than a number of the ones I saw.

Looks like the 24" CI is socket spigot pipework possibly cement lined and in good nick, the alignment may be a bit off straight but there is no major obstruction by tree roots or similar.

The square section either has a lot of water in it, is silted up or the watercourse steps down into the lead pipe beyond. Be careful if you seek to take the silt out of the bottom to check there is a firm invert to the culvert, it is not unknown for there to be just walls and a roof in such circumstances and you don't want to undercut the walls. Is there any sign of a manhole at the change of construction which would be normal?

This pipe was built in 1868. Specifications are 'interesting' and give the dimensions and that it is to be good sound castings. I don't think it is cement lined. There is certainly no evidence of that and the stone culvert is dry stone work. Cast Iron hadn't been in operation long enough to be worried about such things. it is bell and socket construction.

The culvert is stone floored, there is no manhole or any kind of inspection chamber. I am planning to drop a gopro[1] on a string down it. The ends are about 140m apart and may well have been disrupted by tree roots at some point. An old skateboard may come in useful.

The difficult bits will be out of sight. We do have a contractor excavating at points to establish the level of the pipes. The more interesting one is further up which is earthenware and about 12" of similar vintage.  We have at least one break in that pipe, poor flow and various seepage points. We don't know where the start is and have a suspicion as to the end. It may run for at least 450m (and definitely 300m)

A different project. Trying to trace the drains and establish their condition on the railway path.

These pipes are cast iron and about 24" diameter. Stand in the stream, point the camera and torch in about the right direction because you cant get that low without getting seriously wet, and hope. Ant try it again.

Yes that is a square stone lined drain in the second one, leading to the cast iron pipe

I know it shouldn't have reminded me of one of my photos...but it did

On yesterday morning's cold and grey club ride we passed a local field and I made a mental note to drive back out there if the sun came out.

The sun came out and I went back at sundown.  I'm so pleased I made the effort.  Basically Hampshire is about 25% Rape Seed in April and May.  Some people disapprove but I think it's glorious in the sun.

That requirement is crying out for a wireless smartphone control app for your camera, so you can see the image remotely from the camera.  Lumix LX100, for instance, can do this - I'm sure there are other options.

Not on a D80 there aren't. I could do live view on the D610 but didn't have that one with me. A short tripod and the right-angle viewer would have helped too. As it was, digital is quite forgiving so take loads and hope, then repeat till it works, whilst trying to not drop the camera in the stream in a hailstorm.

With clouds like we had at lunchtime today I just had to get out with my camera again.

Having bought a couple of 2l bottles of cheap fizz on the way home, I now have the makings of a boat in which to put an action camera and a torch. With the aid of a long piece of string I shall investigate the pipes further.

@Lee: The clouds we had on Sunday:

We had just dropped from 720 metres to 420 over 9 km, through hammering rain on a twisty road with the cars going past like motor launches.

Not the weather for a decent camera.

Great fun though.

Today they have been starting to work on replacing the cycle path. It took a lot of adjustment to get that first kerbstone into position.

Taken last night at the end of my commute to the station:

The colours looked a lot deeper/natural on my phone's screen. Looking it on the computer it seems to be kind of faded. I guess there wasn't quite enough ambient light for the phone's liking.

This is my first go at "Focus-Stacking" in Photoshop.  It's 4 images, from a tripod, each focussed at a different distance, from a few inches to infinity.  Photoshop then merges the images and blends the focus points to give a huge depth of field.  Would be useful for macro I think (where DoF is usually tiny).

Trying to work out where you took those from, Jaded.  Not Southampton water, or one could see the other side, don;t recognise the bench etc, but I didn't think they were line astern for all that long.

It was from Seaview, near Ryde. I'd been checking out some of the big or fast ships and had completely missed these. Queen Elizabeth at the front, Queen Victoria in the middle and Queen Mary 2 at the rear. According to 'Marine Traffic'!

clarion, it was the 175th Anniversary of Cunard, apparently.
