Title: Music/musicians I'll probably be sneered at for liking...
Post by: Kathy on 19 February, 2009, 01:06:43 pm
Leaving my liking for Folk music out of this thread, quite often when I'm home and want some background music without having to actively choose an album, I'll often switch 4Music or TMF on. I'm finding that there are quite a few artists there that I'm really quite enjoying, despite People Who Know Music telling me I shouldn't.

Pink: I've always kind of liked her stuff - I've even got M!zzunderstood. Her early stuff was full of energy (though not as powerful an energy as Dame Shirley's rendition of Get this party started) but also conveyed a melacholic edge (Family Portrait and Just Like a Pill). She's really developed something unique now, with songs like Stupid Girls and So What? being full of humour (and that's before you even start watching the videos, which are hillarious), as well as having a great sound.

Katy Perry: Apparently I'm not supposed to like her stuff. Apparently the faux-lesbianism is, like, so exploitative, y'know? Well, yes, that's the whole point of the song! But it's cheery little cheesy pop songs which are great to bounce up-and-down to if you're washing up. :D

Lilly bloody Allen: couldn't stand her old stuff. The stuff that absolutely every critic described as "deliciously wickedly subversive" which I assume is a euphamism for "spouts a lot of boring sh!te in a whining Mockney out-of-key tuneless monologue." But her latest single in which she has apparently sold out and become something approaching mainstream (a Bad Thing) actually contains something resembling a tune! :o She's almost tolerable!

So who else shouldn't I be liking, so I can know who else to add to my album collection?

I've not heard Bloody Allen's latest album, because her last one pissed me off so much.  I might have to try it now, since I also like Pink and Katy Perry.

Can you add Mika to the list?  Everyone hates him.  But he makes good washing-up music too.

Not that sort of washing up music, Regulator.

Oh, I'm not recommending you buy the latest album. All I'm saying is that the latest single doesn't require the nuking-from-orbit of every radio in the house whenever she is played.

Oh, I hadn't realised I wasn't supposed to like him either.  :-[

<hides Mika album>

I've just remembered another one:

The Killers: I'm quite tempted to buy Day & Age on the strength of the tracks Spaceman and Human which have a lovely Pet Shop Boys feel to them. But apparently this album isn't as good as the older ones (which I found rather uninspired).

Girls Aloud

I think I must be getting old, but I can't tell Girls Aloud from any of the other all-girl groups. There's the blonde, the brunette, the token ethnic minority one, an unhealthily skinny one, and the ugly one who can actually sing (you know, the redhead who looks a bit like Cherie Blair).

Is that Girls Aloud, or Pussycat Dolls?

Kelly Clarkson is good shout-along-to music too.

I have a liking for one Wham record, as it celebrates unemployment, getting the DHSS and forms B1 and B2 into a song deserves some respect.

They're all unhealthily skinny, but I think you're describing the Pussycat Dolls.  Girls Aloud are: the aggressive one, the gobby one, the skinny(est) one, the ginger one and the other one.  Great pop, esp. Sound of the Underground, Love Machine and Something Kind Oooh.

Any pop music! It will be either cheesy, superficial, predictable, exploitative or just plain boring. A lot of it will be all of these.

Whoops, I seem to have put my cynical head on again this morning.

So much of what I like has been out of fashion & back in at least once (Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, NWOBHM, punk, ska, dub etc) that I'm not sure what it is I'm not supposed to like any more :-\

I like a good pop record. I don't care if it's got vacuous lyrics written by some back stage team of song writers so long as it sounds good. Not everything has to have meaning or be edgy. Sometimes a kit cat is what you want not Belgium chocolate.

I used to have a couple of his albums & have seen him in concert a few times. His early stuff is not at all bad, the "Lady In Red" schmaltz made more money, that's all. He was a good friend of one of the local Radio City DJ's Phil Easton who sadly died a few weeks back.  A great influence on (some) of my musical tastes..

My first 2 gigs, Chris de Burgh & The Boomtown Rats, no wonder I grew up strange....

Looks round at huge pile of LP's & CD's.   Bach to Black Sabbath, Thelonious Monk to This Mortal Coil....Arvo Part to Pet Shop Boys...Chris de Burgh to Cocteau Twins...

All music is good to someone at some time.

I can even sing along to Abba.....

Does Robyn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robyn) count?

Girls Aloud are the best pop group around.  If you listen to the "production" they (well, their writing team) have used lots of ideas and sounds from "underground" electronic and dance music.  The songs on top of this are usually catchy, as well.

Vanilla Ice always was shite though.  I liked a sample of him being used in a M&S advert a few years ago though.

I think the sneer factor with the Beastie Boys comes from just after No Sleep... (or whatver the first album was called) when they were very much viewed as a wannabe hip-hop-lite boyband and before they started getting critical acclaim from the more trendy members of the music press. Thus I still feel that they are the sort of band that are sneered at (wrongly) by a certain generation.
Saw them at their first UK tour - thought that they were the greatest band Id ever seen until Run DMC came on next!  the Beastie Boys doing Walk This Way with RunDMC was pretty good!

Vanilla Ice I think had potential, but was very much lead astray by the record company - they tried to turn him into a "pretty boy with attitude white bobby brown" type thing and it all went to his head a bit.  Before he got into the charts he'd never be seen dead in a shiney suit or expensive hair cut.  I found his later stuff, after he'd been used up and spat out by the record industry quite entertaining too.

Anyway, it's a good thing that I didn't mention Rick Astley!

I was introduced to the music of Paddy Roberts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paddy_Roberts_(songwriter)) by my parents, who knew him when they were in Africa.

His stuff is available on CD (I got my mum his CDs to replace her old scratched LPs, which had been lugged around the world for 40 years).  If you get the chance, do listen.

For your delectation, here's the Ballad of Bethnal Green (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbSEJ5v6zFQ)... Enjoy!   ;D

And the lyrics of my favourite Paddy song... The Lavender Cowboy

Quote
Yippee-i, yippee-oh
Yippee-i, yippee-oh, yippee-ay
Which sounds rather silly, but ev'ry hillbilly
Spends half his life singing that way

He was just a lavender cowboy
With only three hairs on his chest
And he rode on a filly called Daffydowndilly
The prettiest horse in the West

Ev'ry morning they went out together
While the others looked on in dismay
'Cause he'd round up the cattle a-ridin' side-saddle
Because he preferred it that way

He was just a lavender cowboy
Who committed a terrible sin
He went out on a bender and slugged a bartender
And stole all the strawberry gin

So the posse was sent out to find him
And bring him back dead or alive
And they knew as they went they were hot on the scent
By the smell of Chanel No.5

And they found him a-lyin' unconcious
With blood running all down his chin
Till they looked a bit closer and what do you know, sir
They found it was strawberry gin

So, they shot the lavender cowboy
And said as they layed him to rest
You'll be happier now, boy, you can't be a cowboy
With only three hairs on your chest

Jean-Michel Jarre. Decried as 'elevator music' by people who then go and sing the praises of much of the stuff he's influenced & inspired (Air & Daft Punk, for two- now they sound like elevator music to me). He hasn't put out a decent album in twenty years, mind....

I was introduced to the music of Paddy Roberts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paddy_Roberts_(songwriter)) by my parents, who knew him when they were in Africa.

Well that makes at least three Paddy Roberts fans on here!  Butterfly was the first person I met outside my family who'd ever heard of him.

Def Leppard, in their best boogie-rock phase.  They lost it with "Hysteria", I thought - too many electronic effects.  "High and Dry" and "Pyromania" are the albums to buy, although in no case can the lyrics be described as anything other than banal.

Def Leppard
Carole King
Glen Campbell
Scorpions
Runrig (the older stuff before DM got Ego and a haircut)
U2
Monkees
Ozric Tentacles

However....there are groups/artists that sre sneered at purely for fashion reasons. Just because something was recorded more than three weeks ago, its musical value is not diminished. Wow's Bach is an excellent example. So, here are some selected bands of mine that many will sneer at purely on age grounds:
Jethro Tull
Hawkwind
Lindisfarne

Lady Gaga. I'm sure I should hate her for her lack of fashion sense, her insistance in not eating enough pies and wearing little more than a bizzarely-cut bikini in most performances, her vulgar self-promotion, and a number of other things.

And yet... I can't help liking all the songs of hers which I have heard so far, and admiring her business acumen (in much the way I admire the business sense of Paris Hilton and Katie Price, but that's a different thread entirely). I'm probably going to go and buy The Fame, even though I am sneering at myself for considering it.

You need to find Peter, Paul and Mary,

I admit I am the wrong generation to like Pentangle (born 10 years after they split) but was more than disappointed when they refused to do Jack O'Ryan as the encore when I saw them live last year.

It is a 17 minute track though and I think some of them were feeling their age.

I was going through this thread thinking how little I could find to 'sneer' at. In the end, if you like it, you like it.

I've got what I think is a pretty broad range of taste in 'popular music' (jazz, classical and other things too, but let's leave them for now).

I can listen to any amount of shiney disposable pop. I love the joie de vivre of 70s disco-soul like Earth, Wind and Fire. I can drown in the vocal style and the sheer unapologetic romanticism of people like Glenn Campbell. I can go for the anger and teenage kicks of punk. I like the seedy glamour of the new romantics like Soft Cell. Hip-hop has beats, rhymes - and a reality to it that moves me in much the same way that the best folk music does. I love the songwriting and wry wit of Brit-pop, old and new (from The Kinks through XTC to Blur and Super Furry Animals). I can apreciate the musicianship in speed metal as much as the intricacies of flamenco (and as Rodrigo and Gabriela have shown, they aren't that far apart). I like the commitment to minimalism and space that characterises things from Krautrock to trip-hop. I love individuality and experimentalism of oddballs like Bjork, Sufjan Stevens and Owen Pallett. Even Travis and Coldplay at their best do melody well, and I can go for melody. And so on. I don't apologise for any of it, whatever anyone else thinks, however much anyone sneers.

However, there are just a few things I just can't listen to:

1. sheer middle-of-the-road crapness that hints at the worst kind of Andrew-Lloyd Webbery musical, e.g. Meatloaf. There are people who have managed to combine 'musical' vocal style with some grandeur and pop sensibility - look at Arthur Lee of Love, who married Johnny Mathis to psychedelia, but Meatloaf in comparison just seems a lumbering musical halfwit;

2. Twiddly stuff with screeching vocalists singing laughably pretentious lyrics (e.g. Rush). Sorry, but I just can't go there. It's like  someone reading from an interminable sub-Tolkein fantasy trilogy while scraping their nails down a blackboard.

It's not that I sneer at people who like these things, but I don't understand how the people who listen to them can do it. That's all.

"Toxic" by Britney Spears.  I have to say I think it's a great track.
"Goodbye to Love" by The Carpenters.  Great voice and one of the first guitar solos that ever caught my attention.
Several Jim Reeves songs.  Great voice
Several Patsy Cline songs. Great voice

I can't "come out" and say I like Britney, The Carpenters, Jim Reeves and Patsy Cline because they all produced some awful dross (disposible pop, sugar-sweet pop and C&W...I mean ..yeuch), but, when they were good, they were very good.
