I wanted to go this route

The Garmin Edge 605 wanted me to go this route

WTF?

Is it my settings or what?

mine does that too, trying to prevent me from cycling on main roads.  Your suggestion has you doing 200 yards of the A13, theirs goes straight over the roundabout.

Damn annoying it is too, I was half way round a 30 mile loop instead of a 2 mile straight line last summer before I realised...

If that's what the problem seems to be, maybe try setting it to 'car' instead of 'bicycle'? And then tweak the 'avoid settings' to strike out highways and toll roads.
Maybe that will err the other way and commit you to too many trunk roads - I must admit, just looking at the manual, that the routing settings do seem a bit limited on this model.
But then I don't think I'd trust any pocket-sized GPS to second-guess 'the way I wanted to go' - seems to be asking a bit much, to me, and the downside if when it gets it wrong just too distressing to me and my legs.

The general solution on the Garmin forums is to set the mode to car as FF suggests.

My 705 sent me down a small track a while back. About 500meters down the track, I was overtaken by a quad. They looked at me as if I was mad. Upon rounding the corner, the road disappeared into a stream and didn't reappear within sight!

It's set to "car" but to avoid "highways".  :-\

Wonders whether to replace paper maps with new fangled GPS technology.

Imagine a 2- or 3-week cycling tour, with a nice high daily mileage - the advantages of going paperless over those sort of distances soon become very apparent.  Besides saving on weight and bulk, you also cover the ground a bit faster, because there's far less stopping at obscure junctions.

I wanted to go this route

Are you starting from the south or the north on your route?  If you are starting from the south, then your route has you going the wrong way round a roundabout on the A13...

and if starting from the north then it goes the wrong side of the A13

It was plotted using the "running" mode which ignores directionality of roads.

I am now a "Motorcycle/Car" and no longer avoiding "Highways". This sends me on the far more sensible route.

I may try reverting to "Cycle" next week to see what that does.

The lesson of this is: if you ride like a car, route like a car.
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.
