Never knew that about their eyes. One for eating, other to keep a look out.

I was amused that they'll hunt and eat rodents.  Who needs a cat when a chicken will do much the same!
Actually, it is rocket science.

Not sure I believe that.

(It might be described in Rogers and Anson (1979) Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior 10(5):679-686, but I can't get the paper here and it doesn't appear to study natural behaviour.)

A pheasant got into my friends chicken pen last year. They had about twelve of the big brown girls. They ganged up on the pheasant cornered it and killed it. They can be quite vicious things chickens. Mind you not as vicious as the fox that got in in broad daylight past the electric fence and killed the lot a few weeks later.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

All of my neighbours' chickens got taken by foxes last week. I did tell them that they shouldn't leave them in a pallett-pen outside at night surrounded by chicken wire that was not dug in, even on a hard old gravel driveway... the foxes dug in through the gravel and probably spent a hour or so coming back and clearing out the lot. A racoon probably got in on the act too - we found a paw print!

Anode, Dolce & Gabbana

Have now been joined by

Coco

Chanelle

Anode no longer lays any eggs but is enjoying her retirement in rude health, as the grande dame of my little flock. Dolce is the light sussex, Gabbana the silver sussex (both laying) . Coco and Chanelle are now also laying and you can tell Chanelle has maran in her veins as her eggs are a rather lovely deep brown.

Then the chickens would have eaten them. My five *adore* strawberries. And pear. And peach. And nectarine...
