It disappeared?  :o
It's a bit weird, but actually quite wonderful.

That's taking minimalism too far.

You'll be needing a few more cable ties.

Tell us what happened!

He tried to squeeze that last mile out of a worn rim - and failed ;)

He went to Hampton Court with Brent Cyclists, on a bike I'd previously owned.
He pumped up the tyres before he left home, then met the 'crowd' and rode to Hampton Court. Left bicycle in a sunny spot whilst partaking of refreshments. Returned to split rim.
Took a long time to return home using multiple trains and wheeling bike...

My original Mavic Cosmos rear rim did that while I was pumping it up at work.  It made a helluva bang when it went.

My Kirk did it in traffic.  Exhilerating.   :o

Time for an upgrade!
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

I am very thankful that David was In The  Caff/Pub when this happened.

Reminds me, I haven't checked my SON wheel in a while and that rim has done 5808.8km (and mainly fixed km too). Time to dig out the rim guage...

One like this:- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350006206551

You use it to measure the thickness of the rim on the braking surfaces (but you need to remove the tyre).

Brand new Open Pro is 1.7mm.
After 4000 miles one of my rear wheels was down to 1.1mm.

What brake blocks is that with GB?

I guessed as much, or I remember you mentioning it.  Is .6 mm wear acceptable in that short a time?

Short answer: yes

Long answer:

Those 4000 miles were mainly in bad conditions (autumn/winter/spring) and were also the first 4,000 miles I did on fixed so I was braking more as my leg braking wasn't good. I've also done lots of Audaxes on it in hilly-ish terrain and since my spin-fu is only at 160rpm I had to cover the brakes on many of the descents.

Now that leg-braking and spinning is better I'll get at least another 6000 miles from another .6mm wear and I'd be happy with a minimum 10,000 miles from a rim.

Of course, a disk wouldn't wear the rim at all  :P

Beaten to it by JRG,

But this is one of the reasons I love my discs.

Next to bugger all maintenance is the other.
