(we're hiding from the worst of the noise on channel 13)

This strategy thwarted by barakta's crappy XP netbook.  Now slumming it with the proles on channel 6.

BT Infinity to a cabinet 650 m away, via a hole full of water (as I found out when the water got into the junction box thingy and stopped the web working)

This afternoon I got about 3.5 download and the testing thingy says the server is in Nottingham.  Just now I got 8 using their fondleslab app and it reckons the server is in Enfield ???

I always, always interpret the thread title as "Your internet bottom bracket speed"

Which doesn't even MEAN anything.

I did phone Virgin 150 today and via many automated menus had a remote scan undertaken, which recognised and rectified the speed issue. (Would still prefer a human bean tho' but).

I assure you that we have absolutely no shortage of (un)structured cabling.  The Devil's Radio is strictly for portable devices.

So the new Feanor Outpost in Edinburgh has just had it's VDSL hooked up, and I'm getting the maximum 80Mbit!

Woo!
(No screenshot of the speedtest, I'm afraid. I'm back home in Aberdeen now.)

The cabinet is right across the street, and can be seen directly out of the windows.  About 100 metres away, as the cable runs,  at a guess.

Mrs. B's old laptop wot I'm borrowing to play with in front of the TV is downloading at 30-35 meg, or less than half what I usually get on my under desk (hence 'desktop' is inappropriate) computer with separate keyboard & screen. The wifi should be quicker than that.

Weakness of laptop? Wi fi not working proper? Downloads slow atm coz all the neighbours are plugged in?

Worth noting that Virgin Media have lowered their prices for new customers.
They seem happy to upgrade bandwidth/lower the prices for existing customers too if they are willing to enter into a new 12 month contract.

It does - you're not on Wifi, and it shows 4G top left. But the 'my results' page would show it better.

Well, this looks rubbish, but considering where I am you couldn't hope for much more.  (And it's free.  )
Youtube mostly OK - Iplayer not great.  If I want a program, it's better to download it rather than try to watch "live"

A little better now that we've moved back into the village.

I'm getting 21mbps in the middle of nowhere*

Apparently it will go up to 50 for most of the time, but this is a busy time of day.

*Very North. Where I was getting about 4mbps on ADSL, with no hope ever of getting fibre.

Do you get a 4G signal where you live, slope? If so, you could consider using a phone instead (wired up to your computer as needed). I’ve been nearly a year without home internet here in Paris, and it works well thanks to 4G. I even work from home with it. Saves me about €35 a month, too.

No mobile phone signal for several miles in all directions here in the Nantgwynant valley - unless one hikes with quite some altitude in mind ;)

Would I move? Am I really unhappy? :)
