Title: Comedy Off-Roading (on Mildy Inappropriate Bikes)

From the department of random thoughts that occurred to me while I was riding my bike:  Why don't we have a gallery thread for this?

Just in case anyone isn't familiar with the term, comedy off-roading isn't what you set out to do on a mountain or cyclocross bike:  This is about extended pub runs along dark lanes with shark-infested puddles; NCN routes letting you down on tour in a spectacular manner; bridleway shortcuts that seemed like a good idea at the time; group rides where you misjudged the routing habits of the ride leader, towpaths with ridiculous slippery bricks, railway paths complete with railway ballast, and of course those moments where the the only honourable thing to do is blame the GPS for leading you astray.

Extra points awarded for Mildly Inappropriate Bikes™:  Mud plugging on a carbon road bike.  Sustrans slalom on fixed.  Descending scree slopes on recumbent tourers.  Brompton cyclocross.  Trikes on deeply rutted tracks.  Anything that involves pushing a lowracer through a hedge.  That sort of thing.

(Danny MacAskill need not apply.)

Unfortunately all my COR photos seem to involve me lying in mud or bleeding, so someone else will have to start us off... what've you got?

"Slow"Coach on his Dahon was particularly impressive (it is a small-wheeled folding bike, though not obvious in that last photo). I thought I'd have the least appropriate bike, on my fixed Dave Yates with 23 mm tyres, but there's always one.

The border terrier wins the most appropriate bike prize.  That's a great one of Kim on Sleightholme.  I lovel the ghostly goods waggon - conjures up all sorts of odd scenarios.

There's another one of those on the road to Tan Hill - since Wowbagger was convinced that there was another pub between Langthwaite and Tan Hill (there isn't, but he didn't believe me), I christened that one the WB Inn.

Here you go, Peter - I think your fear had subsided a little by this point, but I'm afraid you don't get many inappropriate bike points.

(This photo and the above one of Kim are on the gravel track across Sleightholme Moor, between Tan Hill and Bowes, and were taken on the 2011 Friday Night Ride to Tan Hill. It's a necessary bit as it makes an all downhill route to the most convenient train station at Darlington. It was resurfaced earlier that year, but no one believed me when I told them that)

That was a great ride, one of my all-time favourites.  Al is just about to give me the advice about the back brake, not the front.  I'm a bit more confident now - but not much!  The bike didn't enjoy it and got itself stolen eventually.

I believed you.  That much loose gravel doesn't appear from nowhere!

The photos don't do justice to quite how fast I went down there.  I'd taken rather a lot of painkillers for my knee, and achieved a sort of Ballmer Peak for off-roading - quick enough reactions to do the right thing with the bike, but thought processes too sluggish to achieve a proper level of fear until after I'd negotiated a hazard.  I don't think I could do it like that again if I tried.

It's also worth noting that, miraculously, that one didn't end with me covered in mud or bleeding.

Lovely thread! Unfortunately I don't have any photos for it, mostly because I don't have photos but also because in my case it's usually not a mildly inappropriate bike (even the Spacehopper has 28mm tyres and would probably handle that gravel ok) but a very inappropriate rider.  :-[ So I'll just enjoy other people's pics.  :)

Pippa and Andrij will remember this one.... and prolly not let me forget it.
We were on our way to Cambridge. On road bikes.
We'd had a prolonged dry spell.
I thought I'd add interest to the ride by detouring via the longest ford in Europe.
It had been a while since we'd had any rain.....
No photos from me, just some Youtube footage of the sort of conditions we encountered that day....
It took us around half an hour to clean the mud off the bikes, sufficiently to allow the wheels to turn again.
Did I mention that we'd not had much rain?

I've neglected to photograph my road bike off road excursions.  They tend to be efforts to find a discrete place to take a leak, tackling some rough terrain that even some mountain bikers wouldn't.  It's about time I stopped worrying about passing motorists seeing my cock from a quarter of a mile away.  It's hardly worth risking buckled wheels and dog shit for.

IIRC Foxton Lane has been done on just about every type of bike barring an Ordinary and a 'bent.

Though it is not obvious, the first pic has me on my Ridley, with 23mm tyres and far fewer spokes on both my wheels combined than most here have in one wheel.

no photos fortunately but in the summer of 2012 I left work one friday to ride the long way home having specially aken the Yukon in. My route included this (https://goo.gl/maps/rHYoc) ford from the other side. Well despite the dry summer I got less than half way across (walking) when the water was up to the hubs and I decided I would be better served walking back out and riding round via the next road bridge.

Fortunately the weather was good and my feet soon dried out.

100 km later I was home.

A beer or three has much the same effect - I haven't the data to back it up, but I'm convinced I went down there faster after a couple of pints than sober.

There's a tempting shortcut over the hill between Berkhamsted and Hawridge in the Chilterns. It's even marked as a cycle route with green dots on the O.S. 1:50,000 map. The road surface is good up the east side of the hill, but then as you go down the west side it turns into this steep mudslide:

I once led the club ride down Violets Lane. It was the dry summer of 2010, and there was no more than a trickle of water in the ford, but it just went on and on, and gradually we and our bicycles were coated with liberal quantities of yellow viscous mud. Never again!

NCN 7 between Boat of Garten and Carrbridge. There are two routes, one on-road and one off. We tried the off-road option.

Fortunately I was on my own so no photos from this mornings attempt to ride the by-way here (https://goo.gl/maps/QE8HF) on my hewitt tourer with 28mm tyres.

Suffice to say the NOTHING HAPPENED  :-[ Ok, it was a muddy wet track with landrover wheel ruts full of water and tree roots. The rear wheel broke traction trying to climb out of a muddy hollow and the bike toppled right as I unclipped my left foot. 0mph clipless moment onto mud resulting in a bent mudguard stay as I tried to put my left knee through my front wheel.

Later in the ride I came to this ford (https://goo.gl/maps/1s5j1) and as the gauge board read almost 0.5m I saw sense and used the footbridge.

Ah, yes. The only thing worse than landrover wheel ruts are tractor wheel ruts.

That ford looks pretty.

At least tractor wheel ruts are wide, Landrover wheel ruts were narrower than the width of my pedals so there were a couple of unplanned halts when a pedal dug in to the edge of the rut.

Oh, that's nasty. At least you weren't on fixed! I hope... But the annoying (to me) thing about tractor wheel ruts is the horrible corrugations imprinted by their huge ridged tyres. Perhaps not such a problem in wet mud but horrid in dry weather when when they've hardened, like riding over a giant's arran sweater set in concrete.

As I was on my own, the only picture I have is when I stopped to get the camera out...


When we did the 'Cycling Plus jersey relay', I had some time to kill in Brandon, Suffolk while waiting to meet my 'handover'. So, I decided to go a couple of miles out of town and ride the 'Beast of the East' section of Thetford Forrest's Black route.  :D

I was on the recumbent.  :facepalm:

Yes.  Basil was put in charge of route planning after that.

Found it!  A few years back myself, Wobbly, Tomsk and Oaky ride the Peddars Way in a day. In fairness our bikes weren't mildly inappropriate for the terrain but Wobbly pushed the envelope!

Found it!  A few years back myself, Wobbly, Tomsk and Oaky ride the Peddars Way in a day. In fairness our bikes weren't mildly inappropriate for the terrain but Wobbly pushed the envelope!

I had to give up and turn back soon after that, as although the Brommie climbs admirably well, it was incapable of descending that rutted rocky stuff (with sand traps) safely at any speed, and the path got seriously steep on the way down.

Those old railway wagons were sold to farmers during the Beeching cuts by companies like RB Farquar. I think farmers used them as shepherds' huts, lambing sheds and hen houses. Riders on the Merse and Moors, the Erit Lass, the Saltire and other rides go past one near Leithen Hopes.

Saturday was the Origami ride, starting and finishing in Rugely. Mostly Bromptons, other than HK's MTB commuter with Big Apples and my Pomp fixed with Voyager Hypers. Only about 20 miles but quite a bit of dirt roads, some of it noticeably steep up and down and the rain doesn't help traction. Some swearing was involved but happily no falls...

For the veterans of KTTR or night rides over the NY Moors, it's the track opposite the sheep shelter. (http://streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=470324&y=511320&z=120&sv=470324,511320&st=4&ar=y&mapp=map.srf&searchp=ids.srf&dn=647&ax=470324&ay=511320&lm=0) It's a shortcut which cuts out a lot of descending and climbing, too. You do have to make sure not to turn right instead of left when you return to tarmac, though :facepalm:

Went out for a spin yesterday to join up two tarmacked bits I had to do about 1 mile on gravel road and about a mile on bridle way. I manged probably about 95% of it on the bike. Only time I walked was when I hit a ford with a gate next to it and when joining the bridle coming out from a farm strait up on to the fields.

The biggest issue with going off road on a 'bent is that when I build up speed and hit a bump, you get thrown around a bit, early doing bunny hops. But if you go at a easy steady speed, it is remarkably stable and easy to ride rough bits. I only had to stop twice and both times was because I lost traction, hard pumped road tires even at 1.5", are not the best for comedy, well then again, kinda is :)

First time I saved the drop by putting a foot down, scooted forward past the rough and off I went again. Second time I had to step right off as it happened fast and I couldn't unclip in time to get a foot on the ground fast enough to stop the drop. Let the bike fall, caught the fall of my body with my arms and leg and manged not to roll or fall into the only nettles on that bit of bridle way.


Time to find more off road bits around here and get some cycle cross tyres for the bike :)

There were at least two lanes on yesterday's Border Castles audax in Herefordshire and Monmouthshire which would qualify for COR except that they were technically roads and had remnants of tarmac visible between the jagged holes and gravel. Perhaps we need a new category, Comedy Off-Tarmacing.

The riverside ride at the bottom was in fact very pleasant (river Till) - and finished in Etal next to the castle, without the hairy hairpin gradient. Saw a couple of goldeneye ducks for the first time; I had to look them up tonight to identify.

An added bonus was the Lavender Tearooms. I had some lavender cake, different and nice.

Lots of COR on Sunday. Mown grass (on top of the Severn estuary embankment), mud (track by Oldbury), gravel (Sharpness canal tow path), even some concrete slabs (another part of the embankment). And an incredibly overgrown path (taller weeds and much narrower than in Kim's photo above, along with sections of limbo under the tree branches) which, to my surprise, took my inside the fence of the defunct Berkeley nuclear power station.

To be fair, that path got a lot worse.  That's just the bit where I fell off my bike and got the phone out to consult the OS map^[1] between boabwords, before resorting to the 24" gear on Mildly Inappropriate Shoes.  The track had been thoroughly rutted by vehicle tyres before becoming overgrown, so there were surprise mud-traps under all the triffids.

When I reached tarmac gravel, the first job was to remove the Ventisit and bash it against a convenient post to shed a cloud of accumulated grass seeds.  At the next control I worked out that the mystery clicking sound from the front wheel was a stalk that had become wound round the hub inboard of the brake disc - unwinding it span the wheel in a remarkably satisfying manner.

My overgrown path was rideable all the way, apart from a couple of yards where I had to bend too low. And it left me big long stalks in my shoes, wheels and cassette, which would have been useful evidence that I'd arrived innocently if Magnox Security had stopped me. There was another path though (an official byway) where I got overtaken by two horses, two walkers and one dog cos it was so bumpy.  ;D

I suspect this one would have been mostly rideable (apart from one short section where the foliage really needed kicking flat) on an upright tourer or mountain bike, if you managed to avoid the ruts.  Low-racer, not so much.  At least I didn't have very far to fall.  No unclear power station, either.  Though the West Coast Mainline the branch that heads south-east from Trainspotter Bridge was lurking in there somewhere.

Mine's dark blue rather than purple. Pretty close though. Never actually seen a purple one IRL.

The road home from Mildenhall 'Rally' was closed by police because of an RTA (the police didn't give a reason at the time), which meant a >20 mile diversion, or...

And then across a potato field (on a track left by vehicles, but soil tooooo soft to ride, so dragged the trike by the rear wheel) to get back on the road after the incident but the wrong side of the closure the other end.

I think the cop at the other end was a bit surprised at the trike flying over the level crossing and between his road closure cones from the supposed to be closed part of the road...  ::-)
