Took pot luck at this years Celtic Connections with Sierra Hull.  Great musician, but didnt think her songs were very good.
On the other hand, the support band, Awkward Family Portraits were excellent.

Soweto Kinch came down to our monthly jazz venue.  He was excellent, the place was packed.

Tedeschi Trucks Band with Blackberry Smoke as support at Wembley Arena on Saturday night.

Both were excellent but I'm not enamoured of the venue. Wish I had seen them at the Albert Hall last year.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Saw a comedy gig last week in Ely, Glen Moore and another up and coming Indian comic who I think should do well.

Julian Cope (solo) at the Barbican. He struggled with the tech side of things ("my eyes are like piss-holes in the snow" - surely not helped by wearing shades) but made up with "copious" good humour and enthusiasm, and his voice is still largely intact.

Explosions in the sky were on good form last night.  Not the best I've seen them, but still very much enjoyed the night.
All-seated concert @ glasgow royal concert hall:  It felt like everyone in the central 20 seats got up to the toilets and/or bar about 10 fukkin times tho

Rich Hall, plus various other comedians, Up The Creek in Greenwich last night.  He was teh Aces, just for describing Slithy Gove as resembling "an owl in a centrifuge".

Samantha Fish last night at the Brudenell Social Club Leeds.

Fantastic gig. Loads of energy and blistering guitar work. Plus great pie peas and mash in the bar beforehand and plenty of real ale to choose from, what's not to like!

DJ Shadow at Brixton Academy last night. About as non-dull as a guy with a couple of decks, a laptop and some drums can get. Anything but dull, a great show, amazing visuals, and an excellent support slot too. Even if he didn't play The Number Song…

Oh, and last Sunday, Lindemann. Very, very rude, very funny, very loud. And a first for my gig-going, both cake and fish thrown into the audience…

Did she have the trumpet & sax players this time?  We saw her at the Borderline a couple of years ago and they were so loud they drowned La Fish's guitar.  Seeing her on Thursday.

No brass section this time. She does have a guest keyboard player supplementing her own, he's a songwriter in his own right and she produced his new album. He sang a couple of songs backed by Sam and the band. He sounds and looks like Dr John (sans silver topped cane). Two keyboards fill out the sound nicely.

On Saturday the sound was excellent with nothing drowning out anything else. I took a couple of friends who had never heard of her and they were very impressed.  My BiL who was with us and has been to several gigs at Brudenell Social Club said that the sound there is always pretty good so YMMV.

Good-oh!  Past experience at the Islington Assembly Hall has been positive soundwise too, with acts as different as Kong King and Billy Bragg.

The Laurence Jones Band at Oslo in darkest Hackney.  Fine blues-rock Stuffs from Mr Jones and his girly-pink Strat.  He has acquired a backing singer since last I saw him; the unfortunate Abby being squeezed into a tiny corner next to the drummer where her exuberant style threatened to bring things crashing down on his head.  Obligatory hipster on (5-string) bass and a keyboard player who is the spitting image of TV's Simon Banton - rr will know who I mean - if he has a time machine.

Strict 10 pm curfew at the venue so the buggers switched off all the lights when Mr Jones tried to do a second encore :(
Late to this, Simon's on TV!! I do sort of remember going on an astrosoc pub crawl with him that had far reaching consequences for me.

Rosalie Cunningham at the Heartbreakers, Southampton.

Absolutely brilliant.  A crime that she isn't playing bigger venues.

As noted by pcolbeck, Ms Fish on fine form last night too.  Her four-string cigar box guitar is the most evil-sounding example of the species I think I've ever heard.  Shout-out to support act Felix Rabin who, in spite of looking like he has school today, did not let a broken string spoil his attack on "Voodo Chile (Slight Return)".

Yes it was a complete contrast to the last gig our little group attended which was Tedeschi Trucks Band. That was at a massive arena and Derek Trucks has a lovely sweet guitar tone whereas Ms Fish was at a 400 person all standing gig and her guitar tone is just filthy.
