The price tag has become too big, so it is off.

Are these massive events a benefit to society or not? The legacy benefits of the 2012 London Olympics didn’t seem to continue for very long, certainly shorter than predicted.

It hasn’t been completely cancelled, Victoria have said they won’t host it.

Hasn't the Commonwealth got a cash-rich nation with a dodgy image it wants to whitewash? I think Kuwait used to be part of the Empire, maybe they could be persuaded to join?

Hell, they could probably buy title to the Commonwealth, along with a square metre of land in Scotland, for £3.50 into the right Tory kitty.

I'm fairly sure the legacy of the 2022 Games consists of The Bull; some shrink-wrap (in a colour-scheme that won't degrade through years of exposure to pollution, because it looked like that when new) to hide the worst of the city centre brutalism; and a car park in Sutton Coldfield.

(Ha ha only serious.  I believe they also upgraded the facilities at Alexander stadium and the Sandwell Aquatics centre.)
