According to this, Team Sky must impress to secure Tour de France invite | Latest News | Cycling Weekly (http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/latest/433793/team-sky-must-impress-to-secure-tour-de-france-invite.html) 16 teams are guaranteed a place in the Tour. They include several mediocrities and two with high profile doping histories, namely Astana and what was Saunier-Duval. But they don't include the teams of Armstrong, Evans/Hincapie, Wiggins/Vande Velde, or Hushovd/Sastre. How bizarre is that ?

What are the criteria for team selection for the TdF? It used to be decided on the basis of collective UCI points.
