Sadly no photo for this one, the sign was only up for a day.
But in Kingston, yesterday, there were two signs just before a bit where the vehicle lane was closed which directed drivers to first : -
"USE BUS LANE"
and then (heaven forfend)
"NARROW LANE
DO NOT OVERTAKE CYCLISTS"
How cool is that.

"NARROW LANE
DO NOT OVERTAKE CYCLISTS"
Macclesfield has, or had, signs on the road from Congleton, as it approaches the inner by pass, to the effect of "Do not overtake cyclists at traffic islands".

The road was routed around the loch in the sixties or seventies, so the ferry is no more, but the village remains.

Up the road a piece from where I am now (Page, Arizona) is normally a ferry across Lake Powell, but it isn't running at the moment chiz. Otherwise I could have copped a couple of good bridges and a ferry ride ???

This may seem a bit nanny-state but two people have been killed utterly to DETH hereabouts by the heat since April; it was 121°F / 49.4° C here this afternoon and I could have made quite a palatable cuppa with the contents of my water bottle.

Trip to India, stuck in traffic in Chennai (as is the norm for Chennai). Big signs on the central reservation: "Smoking is injurious to the health".
Indeed so, but the irony of studying that whilst stationary in the exhaust-fume fog of "rush hour" was not lost.

I don't know whether this level of accuracy is sensible or silly, but these road signs which I spotted today in Kirkby Stephen (and I must have passed them at least twenty times without noticing) are my new favourite road signs:

It wouldn't surprise me; I lived half a dozen streets south of the Whipps Cross Road. I don't know if they can still use the cycle/pedestrian bridges across the N. Circular these days, though.

I've been told that, before the cows here all went mad, cattle used to be grazed on Whipps Cross roundabout. Trufax?
Yes. Epping Forest and the Wansted Flats are common land, and every year there were herds of cattle grazing, making walking back from the Fleece on dark night an interesting variant of Russian Roulette, it is why there are cattle grids on the entry points to the North Circ up by the Waterworks (https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?ll=51.593066,0.009608&spn=0.001411,0.002411&t=m&z=19&layer=c&cbll=51.592968,0.009561&panoid=xE3K-h_slru-ZLGyK8Ahng&cbp=12,34.02,,0,0) and A12 at the Green Man (https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?ll=51.569975,0.017166&spn=0.022487,0.038581&t=m&z=15&layer=c&cbll=51.571582,0.01735&panoid=0NRtqQNEwmAAtoUbYY4SXg&cbp=12,78.36,,0,0).
They used to wander the streets around here, munching on all the tasty flowers they could reach; leave your garden gate open at your peril. Greatest amusement was to be had as they would wander across the Aldersbrook Road, holding up drivers. Often, the uninitiated would sound their horns, which mostly had the effect of stopping Daisy in her tracks as she pondered what was making so much noise.
The twin effects of the mad cow fiasco and rustling put paid to the economics of it, so it stopped.

As strange as it might sound, it is considered normal in french-inspired cultures to see moped riders on cycle paths.
-
Indeed, that was in Morocco and a lot of the scooters were slower than me, being weighed down with entire families plus a month's fuel and shopping. They also tended to slow to around 10 km/h when on the phone.
The sign is eminently sensible - the cars and lorries stay out of the cycle lane, and the cyclists, donkeys, scooters, horse carts, etc have their own stretch of tarmac.
-
Sharing with donkeys and scooters sounds fairly reasonable, as long as the dedicated stretch of tarmac is wide enough and smooth enough.
-
Indeed, it was absolutely brilliant! Rush hour in Marrakech was something else entirely. I only saw two crashes - both moped v taxi - and am astonished that was all.
-
Once saw a Moroccan donkey come off very second-best in a scrap with a Volvo F16

Judging by the presence of a couple of worm-botherers off to the right, in the river behind the sign. Or in the gert big lake a couple of hundred yards away.

Definitely a sensible sign, Fish was in Marillion, nothing to do with Garbage.

Not sure if it's NCN, but yes there is a (very narrow) cycle path to the right of the picture with a sign. Not deliberately cropped.
It's a couple of years since I've been down this disused motor-road and they've erected barriers and gates which I'm sure weren't previously there - my memory is that these No Entry signs did at one time serve a useful purpose, but nature wins every time!

"Commit no nuisance" is still seen all over Indian cities. Means "Don't piss here!" A less official but probably more effective way of ensuring that is to paint holy figures (Brahma, Shiva, Jesus, Islamic symbols... ) but probably would look a bit odd in a dockyard in Britain!

I saw the "PRIVATWEG" from a distance and my heart sank - the alternative was a long sandy track. Nevertheless I went closer and read the small print - "Anyone who takes care and keeps their dog on a lead is welcome to pass through."

Loose bog seats seem to be more common than well-fixed ones to the disabled traveller...
They're only scoring marginally better for the non-disabled traveller, though I expect the ones in accessible loos get subjected to more sideways stress as people transfer from wheelchairs. The rot set in when they started deliberately making the nuts out of brie, in order that application of ham-fisted monkey force wouldn't crack the bowl when people tried to sort out the wobbly bog seat.

Proximal muscle weakness in many crips means we descend more heavily than ableds and exert forward shear forces on the bolts when rising.

I interpreted it as "open" – the handle is broken and either the door has to be opened from inside or you have to get in the the other door.

I nicked that off the mudguard of a German triker while riding the North Sea route.
I then had it painted on my back for the Brighton World Naked Bike Ride, and photos ended up in the Standard and the Graun.
The problem was that the paint was UV proof and during my Danube ride a little later I had the slogan stencilled on my back...

Leads to earlier sprouting, apparently. Since keeping mine apart I would say the taters are sprouting much less quickly. OTOH it is now also autumn and not summer so not exactly a controlled experiment.

This reminds me of a slightly less polite sign I read in the Geneva botanic garden some time ago, in front of a hole in the ground. The original was in french, but it translates to something like: "This plant is missing because some selfish decadent moron stole it".

An acquaintance with a LR defender (who was generally no slowster) used to do exactly that if he got a tailgater on a single track road. He would slow down until he judged the gap was sufficient for the stopping distance at the speed he was going. If this made the boy racer in the following car get closer, then keep reducing speed. With the low ratio/transfer box (I don't know the exact terminology), a defender can happily drive at less than walking speed if necessary, something that's a complete pain in the arse in a boy racer car.

Always a good idea to slow right down with a tailgater, if they haven't left a safe braking distance then effectively you need both lots of braking distance to allow for gentle braking so you aren't collected by the motion behind.

Cool!
-
Chum & I were running down from one of our local castles ~20 years back when I felt a whack on my right foot and saw an adder looking very dizzy indeed behind me. I don't think it had attacked me, rather that it had lifted its head at the wrong moment and got whopped. I ran on. Chum, about 10 metres back, didn't notice it and his heel landed on its back. Exit adder, I should think.
-
I put up warning signs about the adders on our land, with advice to stay on the paths, and the self-entitled dog emptiers rip them down.
Spoke to an owner a few days ago who insisted that it was too cold for the adders to be about - I told him I had photos to prove they were, so he walked off while his dog rampaged over our fields disturbing the wildlife.
Two dogs been bitten in the last 3 years. Good business for the vets at more than £600 pounds per dog.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not dislike dogs!

Several decades ago, not too far (about a 5 minute brisk walk) from the sign and adder pictured, my uncle's dog was nosing in some undergrowth and suddenly drew back with a wimper. Instantly diagnosed as an adder bite by someone. My other uncle, a GP, took control of the situation and said he would take the dog to the nearest vet about 7 miles away, while someone else phoned the vet to warn them. As a GP, my uncle had a green flashing light on a magnetic mount to indicate he was on an important mission. But as a GP in central Wolverhampton he'd never had the chance to use it. This was his chance. Onto the roof of his car it went, and off he sped with the dog and an aunt down the narrow twisty lanes (actually an A road most of the way, but width, surface, traffic count and likelihood of meeting a tractor more like what you would expect on an English county lane).
The vet did his bit, but it was touch and go for a couple of days because the bite was on the neck/throat and the swelling made breathing difficult for Biddy (the dog) but she survived for several years after the drama .
