I agreeI think Murray is quite an interesting character. He successfully wound up a lot of English people with his comment about England losing. That shows a fair bit of character, because you then know that the internet trolls are going to try to assassinate it.

That's probably the one thing he's said that made me think less of him. But the whole Scotland/Wales chip-on-shoulder about England sports teams topic could easily take up a whole nother thread ... And I wouldn't expect a Wales supporter to agree with me.

Oh, ffs. Here we go again.

Andy Murray and Tim Henman were being interviewed by an English journalist, and the journalist and Henman were taking the piss out of Murray because (surprisingly) Scotland hadn't qualified for the World Cup, and he said, in response to the teasing, that he'd be supporting anyone but England.

Hey, it's just a bit of sports banter. And it wasn't me that raised it. But now it has been raised, lets get our facts straight:
...

Andy Murray and Tim Henman were being interviewed by an English journalist, and the journalist and Henman were taking the piss out of Murray because (surprisingly) Scotland hadn't qualified for the World Cup, and he said, in response to the teasing, that he'd be supporting anyone but England.

"I’ll support anyone that’s playing England." (as reported by the Daily Record)
is very different from
"... that he'd be supporting anyone but England. "

Either way, its no big deal. It certainly didn't turn me into a Murray-hater!

So a record-breaking 3rd win for Andy Murray.

From BBC:

A landmark year for Murray
February 2016: Has first child as wife Kim gives birth to daughter Sophia
June 2016: Becomes Wimbledon champion for the second time
August 2016: Defends Olympic singles title in Rio
November 2016: Replaces Novak Djokovic as world number one

A well-deserved result, I think.

I think I liked it better when it was the BBC's sporting review of the year, with SPOTY as an afterthought. The idea that all these top athletes who spend their lives training to win actually give a shit about winning SPOTY is ridiculous.

Very true. And the programme structure - or at least the snippets that I tend to see - mostly support this. Loads of footage of sport that is unrelated to any of the awards, and just a couple of minutes of Murray at the end.

Of course we all blow up the SPOTY bit by debating "personality" endlessly on social meeja ;)

He got more than double the votes of the 2nd place (Brownlee) and 3rd place (Farah) and the same as the other 13 combined (so it wasn't like the result was down to the Cycling vote being split).

I think it shows that there are a lot of unmarried women out there with a lot of cats.

If I were a bookie, I wouldn't be offering odds on Andy Murray.

And the reply to that was historically "Great! Then you'll have someone to support as the world cup/championships/competition goes through the stages!"

Only till the end of the group stages, then you're stuffed because nobody's playing England after that.

Despite being English I actually enjoy watching videos of all the great Scottish footballing moments.... but mainly for the superb 1970s music on the backing track.

Though not brought up in Scotland my parents are Glaswegian through and through so I was brought up with this attitude.
Now I live in Wales it's changed a bit.

I support anyone playing against England OR Wales.  :-D

Overhearing Welsh Rugby fans talking can be a salient reminder that hubris is very much a British not only English disease ;)

Well, I guess at least Andy Murray has a sense of humour.

I recall that in 1974 when Scotland played England at Hampden, there was a half time appearance by one of the biggest selling pop bands of the day, The Wombles!

As a Scot, I was happy to support both England & Wales at Euro 2016 on the basis that my children could qualify to play for either (as well as Scotland as their place of birth).  My support didn't do England much good though.
